20 Best Dark Rum For Eggnog (2023 Updated)

This. Is. My. Favorite. Drink. Ever. I personally like the effects of alcohol but am not the biggest fan of the alcohol taste. Not an “on the rocks” kind of girl — UNTIL i tried this delicious drink.

Captain Morgan Black Spiced Rum is by far the best in it’s category on the market. I’ve tried it’s competitor the Kracken, which is good, but it’s not as good as the Captain. Kracken is almost TOO sweet, where Captain Morgan has the sweetness but not overpowering.

I ALWAYS have this on hand. Usually most liquor stores and big retailers will carry this.

Such a great product. Yummy drink for those colder days too. A nice alternative if you are wanting something a little different but wanting to sure you’ll enjoy it. Definitely would buy again.

I love this rum. It has a good flavor to it that is not overpowering. It is the best rum for it’s value. It mixes well with most drinks, or just fine on it’s own. There’s nothing I would change about this product.

It is great for anyone who likes Captain Morgan or any other spiced rums.

I saw this little sample-sized bottle at a local liquor store for a dollar and couldn’t pass it up because it the bottle was so cute! I was pleasantly surprised to taste it and find the best rum, and one of the best liquors, I have ever tried! I drank it straight, which I usually do with liquors, sometimes I find mixing liquors with other things causes too much conflicting flavors.

I’m not generally a big alcohol drinker, but I genuinely loved this one. It is spicy, smooth, sweet, and has a nice but not overwhelming burn. It has very nice notes of vanilla as well. If I were to mix it with anything, my first choice would be eggnog, the warm spicy flavors mixed with sweet creamy eggnog would probably really improve my eggnog enjoyment! I look forward to trying that with the holidays coming up, either way, I will definitely be purchasing this again in the future.

To be honest I haven’t opened the bottle, yet. My complaint is with the holiday gift box. I bought several bottles of assorted liquors and was especially excited about the Kraken. The others came with lovely highball glasses or mini bottles, but the Kraken! It had an adorable dark teal glass with tentacles wrapped around it! How quickly my joy turned to disappointment to find a cheap, plastic cup! Something you’d get at a Polynesian restaurant if you bought a Mai Tai.

The most expensive liquor with the cheapest “gift”. That speaks volumes to the integrity of the company. I’ll buy another brand next time.

I enjoy adding rum to my oatmeal and when a friend left this behind after a house party, I was sure to try it with my oatmeal the next working. As with most Spiced rums it is very aromatic. Vanilla and also a caramel/heavy molasses like smell are very present.

When sipped neat The Kraken is very sweet and tastes slightly synthetic, almost medicinal in a way. It’s not unpleasant but overall there is something quite artificial about the taste. It is possible that the actual rum in the blend is not particularly well aged or a particular good rum.

The smoothness of the rum may mean a lot of caramel and other flavourings have been used to hide the roughness of the rum. All that said, it adds the spice and flavour I like to my oatmeal but as a mixer, it may not be my first choice.

It really tastes fine, However the person at the liquor store that sold it to me compared to sailor Jerry’s. Sailor Jerry’s is more of a spiced vanilla, Whereas Black heart is very heavy cherry. Can’t complain much for $17 a bottle but if I’m being honest, I was a bit disappointed.

I wouldn’t buy again, although it’s not undrinkable.

I am a spiced rum fan, trying out various brands; I have been looking forward to Blackheart, but it immediately caused an acidic burn, unlike Captain, Cruzon, and other brands in that price range. So queasy, after 2 drinks mixed with ginger ale.

My friends and I love Blackheart — it’s got a hint of black cherry and caramel, along with the spice. We all used to drink CM, but have switched over to this. I hope that Total Wine & More continues to carry this as I can’t find it anywhere else! My sis in Boston was able to find a handle of this.

Wait, you’ve never tried Corn and Oil? It’s been around since the 1700s and it’s dead simple to make. 2 ingredients plus ice. 1 half ounce of Taylor’s Falernum. 2 ozs of Pilar Sherry Cask Rum. That’s it! Try it.

It’s a smooth sipper with rich notes of chocolate and a finish like a fine bourbon. By itself it’s just ok and probably not my favorite but in this drink, it comes alive and really makes a simple drink seem elegant.

My friend bought me a bottle of this gem. We finished it tonight and i was a bit sad. This is the best rum i have tasted, by far, that is made in Florida. There is one from St Augustine that is a similar price which is rubbing alcohol by comparison.

This rum is smooth, great anyway you serve it. I like to sip on it and if i want to make the best rum and Coke ever, this is the perfect rum. Can’t say enough good things about it. It is on par with the best in the Caribbean in this price range.

Several Key West bars are serving mojitos made with this local rum. I had never enjoyed a mojito that much, so I decided to pick up a bottle of this rum. Tasting it alone, I realized that the creamy vanilla flavor seems beyond what is possible for a pure rum.

I would bet that there is some natural flavor added. But that doesn’t make this an inferior product – the mint and vanilla combo of a Papa’s Pilar Mojito mixed at home takes me right back to Key West, just as delicious as I remember it!.

Don Papa is my 2021 discovery. This is a rum from the Philippines that was introduced to the market not so long ago, or at least I have not heard anything about it. I fell in love with it from the first glass, and upon returning from vacation, the first thing I did was buy myself a bottle.

If you are a hard liquor lover you must try this; you surely won’t be disappointed. The strength of alcohol is 40 percent and at the same time it is very soft and easy to drink just by adding ice. The taste is fruity-floral, very pronounced.

Everyone has their own taste, but for me, the aftertaste is reminiscent of strawberries & cream candies. With all the advantages of rum, the price is quite democratic and does not empty your pocket much if you do not buy it in bulk.

Admittedly, my experience with rum is pretty limited, but I adore this stuff. It has a very strong butterscotchy nose that carries through to the flavor. My palate’s not terribly refined or anything, so I don’t know all the right words, but I can just about guarantee you’ll love this.

So far I’ve made a Mai Tai, sipped it straight, and tried mixing it with some sodas. The Mai Tai was to die for, I already said I loved it straight, but it does not seem to blend well with sodas. At least all the ones I’ve tried the flavors just kind of sit on top of each other rather than blending.

So no on the rum and coke, but highly, highly recommend getting this bottle and trying it out.

A small bottle of this was given to me in a tasting set. I was hesitant because I really don’t enjoy most rum. I will have to say that drinking this neat was so enjoyable that I wished I had a larger bottle.

Now I do! I plan to share it with friends who enjoy really good tasting liquor on an occasional basis.

This is a great tasting rum! It also works amazing in pin a colada mixes, rum and cokes or if you like strong taste, just over ice is nice. It is a bit pricey depending on where you live. But its flavor is really nice.

I would definitely keep buying and recommend.

I love the taste of spice! Captain Morgans Black Spiced Rum (well all of them) is just prefect, especially on a cold day. I always recommend my friends who have never had rum, to start with this one.

The combination of Vanilla and cinnamon gives you a warm hug. I don’t recommend drinking it neat. I love mixing it with coke but my favorite right now is Almond Egg nog with a splash of rum. Yum!.

The “new” Myers’s rum is not nearly the quality flavor of the previous recipe. In an “umbrella” drink I am sure it still works fine as the new flavor is hidden by all the fruit juices in the drink. I have been drinking Myers’s for decades with club soda and a squeeze of lemon and have had to stop as it is completely different since new ownership has acquired this brand.

The color has changed, more orange now, the scent is different and of course the taste is nowhere what it used to be. It is interesting that over the years I noticed that the taste of Myers’s was different in Europe and in many Caribbean islands and the top was metal.

I know these bottles tasted different. Coming back to the states the bottles had plastic tops and the original flavor. Have no clue why the new owners dropped the proper ingredients and went with the ingredients used today but unfortunately is probably due to cost and lack of concern for quality.

It is really too bad as this has been my drink of choice for ages and I just can’t stand the flavor of today’s Myers’s rum. Thank you.

Maybe I just don’t know “Jamaican rum, but I do know Caribbean runs and in comparison to them this imo has a funky flavor. It’s def an original taste out of all the runs I ever had. But it’s not a taste I can into and I’ll drink about anything.

I would never buy. This bottle was given to me. If you gonna drop $19 on a 750ml rum I suggest barcardi that runs $20 for 1. 75L.

Diageo sold the rights to Myers’s to another distiller and the new batches are so NOT Myers’s (although they still charge the same price of course). Total Wine won’t let me write the new distiller’s name in this review, but you can Google them.

The flavor, aroma and color of the new Myers’ are not even close to the original dark. I wrote the new distiller (because they say on the label they like to hear from their customers) and they said they would look into it but there have been no changes.

Fred Myers must be rolling in his grave! For Myers’s lovers, beware! Check the labels closely. I have my family scouring local liquor stores for Diageo Myers and they have found me about 15 Diageo bottles, but these won’t last forever.

We started buying this rum on the islands of Spanish Wells and Eleuthera in the Bahamas. We tried many dark rums in all price ranges. This one by far was our favorite. We use it to make Dark and Stormys.

The flavors of the rum mixed with ginger beer and lime supersedes all other dark runs we have tried. We were so happy Total Wine carries this rum. We placed an online order with them for us to pick up when we returned to Florida.

This is one of the most flavorful and interesting budget rums, particularly within the price point. Upon first impression, you’re hit with a rich caramel sweetness paired with the faint note of barrel tannin.

It slowly reveals a hint of the funky, rotten-banana kind of scent that many Jamaican runs are known for. As it finishes, those rich caramel and fruit flavors start to resemble those of much darker dried fruits, much like I have experienced with a very good Cognac.

There is a considerable amount of burn once it starts to make it’s way through your body, but it’s genuinely not too bad at all. This dark rum is perfect for a cocktail like a Mai-Tai or a Hot Buttered Rum.

While I do find the 5 year Plantation Grande Reserve to be a much more complex spirit, I think that this offers a little bit of everything that makes Rum special. A little sweetness, a little funk, some barrel spice, a touch of banana, burnt sugar.

I could go on. Do yourself a favor and get yourself a bottle, it’s perfect in most Tiki cocktails.

I love all plantation rums but when it comes to “dark” rums in general I find this one the sweetest I had tried so far, which is not a completely bad thing but can turn some people off (Plantation is known for adding sugar to their rums).

If you are looking for something funkier, I recommend myers dark. Compared to goslings dark I would pick this rum over it all day, be it a dark and stormy or cuba libre.

Having experienced the wonderful Plantation 3 Stars White Rum and the sublime Plantation 20th Anniversary Rum, I’ve decided to try out their dark rum offering. The nose harbors a hefty punch of blackstrap molasses, vanilla, and coffee, punctuated with flavors of raisins, banana, and caramel on the mouthfeel.

It certainly has that slight funkiness that’s characteristic of Jamaican rums as well. What more can I say? Plantation Original Dark is a delicious sipping libation, an excellent constituent to cocktails that call for dark rum, and a value at its current price.

Here’s some cocktail suggestions for everyone to try. PLANTER’S PUNCH – 1 1/2 ounce Plantation Original Dark Rum – 1 ounce unsweetened pineapple juice – 1 ounce fresh orange juice – 3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice – 1/4 ounce grenadine syrup – 1/4 ounce sugar syrup – 2 to 4 dashes Angostura bitters With the exception of the bitters, pour all ingredients into an iced cocktail shaker, give it a lengthy shake, strain into a cocktail glass filled with crushed ice, add dashes of bitters on top of drink, and garnish with a pineapple spear and cocktail cherry.

SUBURBAN – 1 1/2 ounce rye whiskey – 1/2 ounce Plantation Original Dark Rum – 1/2 ounce ruby port – 1 dash Angostura bitters – 1 dash orange bitters Stir all ingredients in a mixing glass half-filled with ice and strain into a cocktail glass of choice.

I’m coming over from bourbon and it makes sense to pair my cigars with a good rum. I’m impressed that this blend is double aged in two different barrels. In the bourbon world, that’s a definite plus.

Nice bottle, beautiful label, cork bottle and a very smooth, very easy, very enjoyable drink, especially at this price point. I highly recommend it.

This is a really great light rum, especially for the price. I think this one is a great competitor in the under $10. 00 category. I find it has a bit more character than say typical inexpensive Puerto Rican light rums, so all of you Bacardi Superior folks – give this USVI one a try! Good for mixing, works quite nicely in a Daiquiri.

It’s reasonably smooth, and while you could do better for a sipping rum, you could also do worse. I’m not rating this based on sipping qualities, but each to their own.

This Caribbean rum dates to 1760. Let that sink in. It is actually American, from the (since 1898) American island of St. Croix. Excellent quality rum, unbeatable price. The fact they sell this white rum shows off the product’s quality, since it isn’t achieved by blending aged and spiced rums or adding flavoring.

Their base rum is just really this good. I wouldn’t sip, go with Flor de Cana or similar for that, but it’s excellent for mixing.

It has more good flavor than Bacardi and La Caña Grande at a slightly lower price. It’s not great by any stretch of the imagination, but it does well enough to justify itself. The price point makes it a no brainer.

I don’t normally drink rum, but when I do, I drink Barcelo.

The other reviewers must have lost their taste and smell from COVID. Nothing about this rum can be considered premium. As soon as it hits your tongue, you will taste what can only be described as a burning tire with a hint smoke from an old match.

There are no hints of dried fruits, only an old shot that has been soaked in gasoline. This was a total waste of money and I poured it all down the drain, and now I feel bad for putting my kitchen sink through such misery!.

Hands down, the smoothest rum with delicious complex flavors of vanilla, spice and oak. Just the right amount of sweetness for my taste. Do not mix this rum! The quality of this rum is meant for sipping.

This rum has the most unique nose compared to any sipper rum I have smelled. It is very aromatic, heavy vanilla, maybe orange peel, candy,. etc. In a comparison between rums, this nose by far stood out.

Where it lacks is the taste. Not as complex as others. May benefit from a higher ABV as it tastes sweet and light. I would still buy more given the nose is extremely enticing.

I drink a lot of rum and have tried 100’s of varieties. Tried this a month ago and it is now my go-to rum of choice. Flavorful but not overpowering, taste reminds of the Caribbean, nice caramel and molasses after-notes, delicious on its own or mixed (I like diet coke with mine).

I used to drink another brand of rum until I tried Gosling. Much better rum flavor. How I came across it was from another person who was buying it and suggested that I try it instead of what I holding in my hand.

After years of being a “batty” customer, I prefer Goslings.

This rum is strong deep flavor not like any other rum I’ve ever tasted. While in Bermuda on my first trip I was introduced to this rum in a rum swizzle – was hooked immediately. very distinct taste among rums.

I’m a big fan of dark rums and Koloa is an all-time favorite. I can’t seem to keep it on the shelf. The nose reminds me strongly of vanilla and spices, while the taste is a lovely blend of sweet molasses and nutmeg.

Incredibly smooth and flavorful. I discovered this on a trip to Kauai and now I make sure to check for it every trip to Total Wine. Great stuff.

This is a lovely sipping rum, as well as mixer. In a pinch, use it in baking. The vanilla forward aroma is amazing.

This became my favorite rum while my late husband and I visited Hawaii. Total Wine is the only place I have been able to get it on the mainland.

Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum is a premium Caribbean Rum with spice other natural flavours. It’s alcohol by volume is 35% which might explain why it’s one of my husband favourites. He’s the main Rum drinker in our house and particularly enjoys Captain Morgan Rum mixed with Coke Zero and ice🥃 Personally l enjoy it in a Dirty Banana Cocktail, all ingredients need to mixed in a blender 🍹😉.

I ordered two 10 pack sleeves of mini bottles. I really wanted my mini bottles to arrive in the original sleeves with brand graphics. What I received was 20 mini bottles loose, but very well protected – a disappointment none-the-less.

If you had asked me to send to you a dozen eggs, I would not have send them out of an egg carton – just saying. If you had asked me to send you just a half a dozen eggs, they would still have come to you in a carton.

Little things do matter.

I’m not much of a drinker, meaning it will be many years between me drinking anything alcoholic, I usually opt for Rum with Cruzan Rum being my preferred Rum but it’s not available here so my husband bought this and I am not impressed at all.

It felt really weak compared to Cruzan and even Old Nick. Now it’s just sitting in our fridge with nobody touching it, I might have to try using it for a spiced cake or something. I doubt we’ll be buying this again.

A cherry flavor is very difficult to pull off when it comes to flavorings in food and alcohol products, but Cruzan nails it on the head with this one. This is definitely for those who do not like the sharp taste of alcohol and like alcohol drinks that you can’t taste the alcohol in it (I know its crazy but we do exist).

Be careful though. you can wind up drinking more than what you anticipated!.

Love this rum, I’ve only found it at two places and Total Wine is one of them. VERY affordable and everyone loves it.

So in celebration of national rum day we decided to purchase 4 rums and have a taste testing. Mind you none of us are real fans of Black Cherry but figured what the heck! Hands down winner of the flavored rums we tried.

Loved it and will definitely buy again probably this weekend. Too bad they don’t have the big bottle. Not only did we love the Black Cherry but have to admit it has something to do with the brand as well.

I first had this mixed in with coke and it tasted off but anything mixed with coke tastes ok. Had a friend over a few days later and took a shot of it and figured out the problem. It’s way overly sweet.

I really wanted to like this rum because TBH I love skulls and the whole aesthetic of the brand. I bought another brand of rum to do a comparison and the Black Magic smells 2x as sweet but also tasted it.

It almost overpowers the natural flavor you exspect from a nice rum. It is pretty good as a mixer but that’s personally it for me. It’s too bad I really wanted to like this brand.

This rum was gifted to me by someone. I tasted it without even knowing it was rum. I cannot explain the flavor but it isn’t like your traditional spiced rum. It has a flavor that reminds me of a mildly flavored black licorice or sambuca but not really.

I didn’t even mix it with anything. just kids sipped it like a sambuca. I personally like it but it may not be everyone’s cup of tea (or rum). Quite strong initially (it’ll put some hair on your chest) but afterwards, somehow, it manages to be smooth.

I’m going to buy it again to really get the taste of it. I was given a few small bottles by someone. Seems this would be phenomenal in a coffee drink.

My daughter bought a bottle of this and I’m not a big fan of spiced rums as I usually drink Pusser’s, Myer’s, Brugal or any other premium dark rum, but this is really good and way better than Captain Morgan.

It has a very subtle aftertaste that is very pleasant and mixes deliciously with ginger ale and a touch of Rose’s lime juice for a classic “Nelson’s blood”. I highly recommend it.

For me Barcardi is certainly the gold standard for rum. I’m a bourbon drinker and like to mix it up with good sipping rums. My personal favorite is Diplomatico Reserve and hoped this would compete but sadly it did not.

In fact I was a little disappointed. Bacardi Black or Gold are excellent and I would think 10yrs or aging would create a lot of depth and smoothness and it really didn’t. This was no smoother than several regular runs especially Bacardi for a fraction of the price.

Don’t get me wrong-this is a good rum and would make an excellent cocktail but that’s not what I bought a 10yr aged rum at almost $40 for. Good but not worth the price. Hope this helps.

I avoided rum for a long, long time after walking Captain Morgan’s plank many years ago. I like neat scotch and wanted to give something else a try. Fixed on rum and bought Bacardi Gran Reserva 10 after reading some reviews.

It’s very tasty neat and smells like dessert. Smooth, too. I don’t care for hooch that bites back so this fit my bill perfectly. I will definitely buy it again.

I’ve been purchasing this product since it first came out. Unique age statement, great price. Nice notes of vanilla and caramel, velvety smooth. It’s perfectly suited as a sipper, but sometimes I spiced it up with a little bit of ginger ale and it’s delicious.
