Best Crochet Book For Beginners (2024 Updated)

A very good book for absolute beginners with easy to follow instructions and pictures showing you exactly what to to. Also gives some patterns at the end of the book.

I was expecting this to be a much bigger book – sadly it’s about the size of a magazine in thickness and there isn’t much content. Not worth just under 10 at all sadly. Only about half the book contains crochet steps and stitch techniques, the other half contains tasks to make things.

I had no idea how to crochet but this book is so easy to follow. I recommend it to anyone looking to learn crochet.

The pictures and written instructions are very clear and easy to follow. As a left-hander I need to reverse all the moves but this isn’t a problem as this book is foolproof. Sarah Shrimpton has a friendly way of writing, making the book enjoyable at the same time as teaching a skill.

Was very helpful in hurting me back into crocheting for new grandchild after not doing any for 25yrs & even taught myself new stuff & edging from instruction in book so deff helped me get going again

I have crocheted for years as I was taught by my sister. This is an amazing resource for teaching beginners or for someone who never really learned how to read a pattern. It keeps it simple and walks you through all the stitches.

Most crochet patterns are only the same handful of stitches; but once in a while there is a new stitch perhaps you haven’t yet tried – this shows you how! It helps you to branch out and try things – after all, it’s only yarn! Give it a try! I have bought several of these books as I keep lending mine out to people who want to learn – I think every crocheter should have a copy along with all their favorite patterns – the information will always be a help.

Don’t let the title fool you, even us long time crocheters have learned a lot from this book!.

I own several titles of the dummies series of books. I really like them, the way they are written etc. They aare interesting and informative and I expect I will buy a few more in the future.

Bought as a Christmas present for my daughter in law, she has wanted to learn to crochet for ages, this should help her achieve her ambition. Her grandma could crochet but unfortunately died about 12 years ago, and never got round to teaching her,so now both herself and my granddaughter are going to learn together.

Great book with the basics to get started. You can really make the most of it if you have made use of YouTube vids and then consolidate your learning of basic techniques using this book. there are lots of handy tips too which you may not stumble across on YouTube too!.

This book is great for a beginner. It includes information about types of wool, the best hooks to use for different projects and a list of common abbreviations when reading patterns. Some of the diagrams could’ve a little clearer but I managed to get the hang of it.

I did have a little knowledge of basic Tunisian crochet before purchasing this book, but the clear pictures and description have meant I can now do the knit and purl stitch in Tunisian crochet as well.

The author explains very clearly how to create all the stitches, so it is easy reading. The selection of patterns in the book may not be what you would necessarily wear but none the less they are very good beginner patterns, to practice.

The book is not extensive but easy to pick up and carry around with you as its paperback. Very good value for money.

Kim Guzman is an authority on Tunisian crochet. I have most of her Tunisian books/tutorials and wanted to add this to my collection. She is clear in directions and offer some nice beginner patterns.

As an experienced knitter I have recently learnt to crochet. This is an excellent book because Tunisian crochet combines the ease of crochet with the look of knitting.

Good intro crocheting, easy to follow. The only disappointing part is the writing is very small.

I love how this book is modernizing crotchet and encouraging younger people to take it on!! Great photography, from cover to cover, all detailed, so easy for anyone to follow. Just a beautiful book to leave lying around for anyone to pick up and nosy through!!.

I have been crocheting for over 50 years and never run into patterns with this many flaws. The one good thing about this book is you will learn to read pictographs because they are flawless. I have finally concluded the author drew the pictographs and someone else wrote out the directions.

The written directions are a mess and don’t match the pictographs i. e. the 22 Harbin pattern says chain 6 and the pictographs says 9. The pattern and picograms show this step in two different rows. However if you are willing to learn to read the pictographs you will find some great patterns and have fun with the snowflakes.

However, don’t purchase this book if you are looking for written instructions. They aren’t helpful and as mentioned before don’t always match your picture. Thus will lead you in the wrong direction. I can only concluded those giving this book 5 starts didn’t use the directions or made different snowflakes than I did!.

I got this for my daughter to make her own timeless Christmas tree decorations. We have several that my husband’s great aunt made and they are beautiful! All that you have to do is to ‘paint’ them and ([let them dry) with white glue!.

Nice book with simple instructions. Too Small print and rather than being bound should be a spiral.

The book itself is in good condition and was satisfied with that BUT, for beginners this isn’t the book to start with as it’s already advanced from first chapter. For crocheters that are familiar with stitches and such it is handy.

myself, I had to order another crochet book for absolute beginners which is awesome! “First Time Crochet- absolute beginners guide. ” With this book I am already crocheting and have learned many stitches in just 5 days a couple hours a day when possible.

I also enjoy the patterns in the beginners book much better. Thank you.

This book is a must for any crocheter who is just starting to crochet or who is experienced! The crochet stitches are illustrated in full sequence photos. There is a size conversioin chart in the book for converting hooks from metric size to US size.

Sometimes I find crochet patterns from the UK I like and this conversion chart will come in handy for the right crochet hook to use. It is a good idea to learn both US and UK crochet patterns in my opinion.

This book helps with everything crochet from A-Z just like the title of the book states! I’m very glad I have it for the crochet stitches and the new stitches I see in the book!.

This book explains crochet stitches in novice terms. The pictures are excellent. I have purchased several copies of this book to use as a teaching tool as I show my students how to crochet. It is also a terrific reference when you read patterns that can be confusing.

This was not easy to follow along to. Not helpful. Provided no context and gave materials that were not necessary for the type of basic crochet I was attempting. I should’ve just bought needles and thread myself and YouTubed the rest.

I purchased this kit for myself as I had a lot of free time as a result of an injury. It was very informative and the pictures made sense. The patterns were easy enough to understand for a beginner. I did supplement with some how to videos as I do well watching someone else do it.

But the book acted as a reference when I was trying to remember how to do certain stitches. The hooks are good and strong. The needles are plastic and flimsy which I found helpful at times as I was trying to weave my tails into my project.

But I could see them breaking. The crochet markers are lightweight and small. They are the twist on type so getting them on can be difficult on bulkier yarns. Overall I am glad I bought it!.

I bought this book to support my friend Lauren who created this book. I don’t know how to crochet but I am willing to learn. The patterns looks easy enough to understand once I can understand the basics.

I love how there are pictures description showing what it should be looking like as you are crocheting a particular project.

Great patterns, very clearly written with plenty of photos. I like the hardback. Hopefully it will make the book more sturdy alongside frequent handling.

Informative, I have read about half of this book it has 130 pages ,large photos easy to understand how to do stitches. It’s really greT fir someone like that had only just. Began crocheting and never did anything really detailed.

I would recommend this even for a child to start learning how to do stitches correctly.

I was not a beginner and knew how to crochet but was fuzzy on the stitches. Haven’t done crotcheting for many years. I was interested in a book I had used when I really was a beginner which showed black diagrams of the actual stitches much clearer than these photos.

Was disappointed when I received this new book. This had “too much information” and would have scared me off from learning if this was the book I learned from.

I like this book. It has details about crochet hooksand yarn types. It has pictures of how to hold the yarn. Like the title “First Time Crochet The Absolute Beginners Guide” it is.

I’ve taken crocheting classes and this book is actually better then being in a classroom. The pictures are so easy to see what’s going on, easy to understand, and laid out in a way that actually makes me believe I can conquer my latest hobby.

The book covers more stitches then I’ll ever probably get to, definitely the only book you’ll need!.

Clear step by step instructions. Nicely detailed photos. Explains the very basic steps to get started and (kindly) doesn’t assume that you already know anything. A good reference to have on the shelf, too.

For a beginner crochet this is excellent. It gives easy instructions to follow. I like step by step instructions.

Crochet One-Skein Wonders 101 Projects from Crocheters around the World by Judith Durant Edie Eckman As I’ve accumulated many balls of yarns in varying weights I thought this would be the perfect book for me to read.

Love knitting for charity and that I can make things fast if they are the smaller projects. Love how this book is broken up into chapters by the weight of the yarn. I have never seen one like this and it’s very helpful when I pull out a ball of sport weight yarn the ideas I get from the book to make.

Also at the beginning of every chapter near the ball of yarn that chapter is devoted to it lists the project names. Charted directions are great for making the jewelry pieces. The written out directions are also included.

Very elegant stitches that would also work not only for the scarf they are shown made in but a baby blanket for the hospital. Wristers are another favorite of mine to make for the local nursing home.

Love the baby afghans the best as that is what I mostly work on for Navy Relief Society. Elephant bib is so cute! Love how also the outfits are displayed some hung on a clothesline so traditional! Love that there are things to make in this book for every season and for all rooms of the house and for the whole family.

Appendix at the back of the book explains what the chart symbols mean and also the stitches involved. Over 60 designers help create this book. What a treasure!.

Love love love this book and the patterns in it!! I first saw the crocheted finger-less gloves on display at my local yarn store. They were so soft and elegant and very comfortable. It was so popular that the store owner was sold out of the book with the pattern and almost out of the delicate yard itself.

So I requested the book from my local public library and rechecked it out two times. I have already made five pairs of finger-less gloves and several other projects from the book! I am a beginner crocheter and knitter.

It is the best Crochet book I have come across with patterns that I will actually make and use or give for gifts. I gave the gloves away this past Christmas and they were a HUGE hit with others requesting them!! When I finally had to return the book to the library, I bought it on eBay because it is one of those books you just can’t let slip away and I will constantly go back for reference.

If you are a crocheter, this is a wonderful book with projects that you can actually make in a timely matter & that turn out beautifully!.

This was purchased as a gift for a friend who crochets all the time and loves buying yarn – she always has small amounts (like one skein) of a variety of yarn left over and was very pleased to receive this book.

I purchased this book to give to my teenager for her birthday since she is learning to crochet. I flipped through the book when it arrived. I must say, I’m very impressed! My daughter is a very visual learner, and the photos and instructions for each different stitch are absolutely wonderful! I must say- I may need to purchase this book again just so I can have a copy! It has photos for each stitch, the drawing/graph type version of the stitches, and the written out instructions! Great learning tool for sure!.

A great reference to a range of crochet stitches. I have made whole projects from individual stitches in this guide, and a large patchwork sampler blanket. Perfect for beginners and experienced crocheters alike.

There’s a problem here. The problem is which stitch do you choose first!!!! Each stitch in this book is simply magnificent. Instructions are clear and easy to follow. A wonderful book that will keep me busy creating for years to come.

I’m not sure about ‘compelling’ but this is probably the most useful and practical book a beginner could wish for! I bought it as a present and have already been presented with a little bag and ear warmers! The text is easy to understand, the illustrations really do illustrate and the sensible spiral binding means the book stays open at the place you need.

and it is reasonably priced. Excellent!.

This book is amazing and a must have for the complete crochet beginner who has never crocheted but wants to learn. Not only is there clear easy to understand instructions complete with pictures, there is also a guide to understanding a crochet pattern (like what all the strange squiggles and words mean) and a fold out abbreviations guide at the back of the book.

As well as great patterns to try including fun rugs, blankets, scarves, bags and a gorgeous coat. Best of all, I just love the small size which fits into a bag or backpack and the spiral spine which folds the book flat, so I can always take it with me and follow my pattern without forgetting where i am.

Great, it was what I was looking for. The patterns to make items like a sweater don’t have any images so there is an expectation of more then beginners knowledge but it’s very handy for learning new stitches, and once your have had a bit of practice you can always try the patterns.

Very detailed but easy to follow instructions on how to do certain stitches. I am very pleased with this book. I will certainly be using this as my bible and my go to book. I would recommend this.

I bought this book because I thought it would help me in teaching crochet. I do teach beginning and intermediate crochet at two local tech schools. The book is wonderful and is well worth the price. The pictures are bright, and so helpful.

There is so much information, and it is written in an easy to understand way. I would buy this book again. I was surprised at the cost. I have paid much more for a book with a lot less information. Buy this book if you are just beginning to crochet, as it will certainly help and explain a lot too.

Buy this book if you are already an established and learned crocheter. You won’t be dissapointed.

Its a lovely book very interesting and has lots of different things you can make which i never even thought was possible with Crochet.

For a second hand book it is in a good condition. It has general information but not to deep into the topic. And saving planet of waste as it won’t be recycled, but reused

I have started to learn how to Crochet; I chose this book, as I also have the baking book and prefer the layout of this brand. This book is very helpful as it has step by step guides with images showing you how the stitches work, so you know if you are doing it correctly.

It gives an in depth explanation of all of the Crochet terms and which each yarn is used for. It also contains patterns to Crochet various items that you can try out. I am very happy with this book :).

Tables for needle sizes covering UK, USA and others very useful. A lot is covered in the book and appears to be an invaluable aid and source of information for those wishing to learn how to crochet.

Brilliant book – explained all I needed to know when starting a complicated project. I could only manage the basic stitches before but the instructions on how to make a fully-closing magic ring were great and worked first time.

The more complicated stitches were well-explained and illustrated. I am now a crochet convert!.
