20 Best Crankset For Single Speed (2023 Updated)

Excellent external bearing bottom bracket crankset. The SRAM Omnium has been discontinued but this is a brilliant 130BCD alternative. If you must have a 1/2×1/8 chainring, there are plenty of robust chainrings available.

I choose to stay with the 3/32nd chainring included with the S300 and used a Connex 808 double (inner and outter links) nickel plated chain. I’m also using an ACS 4 paw freewheel. This is the perfect replacement crankset for my Felt Dispatch single speed project.

I love using the SRAM GXP BB and cranksets on my bikes. It is fully user-serviceable crank can be put on or taken off with an 8mm hex, and the chainring bolts can be unfastened with just hex wrenches too.

Bearings in the BB can be regreased, just pop off the seals with a pin and finger-press the seals back on when done. The only special tool you will need is an external BB wrench if you prefer to regrease with the BB cups off the bike.

On my oldest bike the SRAM GXP BB has 20,000 miles on it and it still runs smooth and quiet, having been regreased every 2000 miles or so. For some reason SRAM chainrings tend to chain-suck, so I recommend replacing the SRAM chainrings with Shimano chainrings once they wear out.

I chose this over the Omnium because I already have several 130bcd chainrings and I run a WI ENO DOS freewheel, so a 3/32 chainring helps. I’d say it’s Apex level stuff. As others have said, the chainring bolts are locktite’d on and you have t drill them out.

I went so far as to try an impact driver got nowhere, as the back side just spun with the front. A Park chainring nut tool couldn’t get enough grip to break the locktite either. Looks nice and the BB hasn’t been an issue yet, though I’m only 100 miles in.

Great cranks! I have these on my DH bike but I purchased this set for my Enduro Bike. As with all high end Shimano Components, these are top quality all the way down to the chainring bolts (which only require a single tool to install).

I purchased these to replace a set of Race Face Next Carbon Cinch Cranks. Super light cranks but after only a season of riding in rocks the crank arms took a beating. even with guards. Splintering and gouges which I guess comes with the territory for carbon cranks and rocky trails.

I installed a 32T Renthal narrow wide chainring onto the cranks and it mated up just fine. 32T may be the minimum though. Anything smaller may cause the chain to interfere with the crank bolt circle.

PROS: Easy to Use, Durable, Versatile CONS: A bit heavy compared to the carbon options.

Way too boss. These cranks are smackin as hell just wish they had them in gold to match all my kashima, and the kashima grille in my mouth you know I’m sayin?

Sigma Sport sell good kit. I’ve been using the 105 stuff for maybe 20 years. It’s just got better. The latest 105 kit looks and works really good. Paired with a carbon frame and a good BB it is rock solid.

For me the 52 ring gives ideal ratios. 36 is plenty small enough. Any case the secret to steep hills is to avoid them like the plague.

NOT that easy to install. Why? Because Shimano doesn’t include the required adapter part (Shimano TL-FC24) for the bottom bracket tool and most LBSs don’t carry it. The product information page should specify this.

As is, you wait for the BB93 part; you get the part; you can’t install the part; you look up what’s missing; you order’s the part that’s missing; you wait for the part that’s missing; then you’re able to install the BB.

Oh, and for $8 or $10 you get a cheap, plastic BB adapter that strips quickly. Way to go, Shimano.

bought this as a ‘cheap’ way to experiment with shorter 165mm length crank over my existing Dura Ace 9000 175mm cranks. experiment a total success as my sore knees that I get after rides have disappeared.

Ive done a few 60-70 mile runs now and lots of shorter rides since fitting and the pain after multiple back to back rides has gone. lower back pain I have after getting off the bike is also much less as the angle the leg has to rise to at top of pedal stroke is less and so there is less stretch across the back and so can confirm this works.

Wish I did this years ago now. Cant really distinguish I have 105 chainset compared to the dura ace chainset such is the homogeneity of Shimano quality across the ranges. I’m in no rush to put Dura ace back on.

Bought cranks, install was simple. Had to remove cranks to tighten chainring. Cranks would not come together, would have 1/2 cm of play since the cranks would not fully seat on the spline. Seems like the machining was not finished well.

Warranty process is slow and unresponsive. Can only upload one picture, support does not want to discuss or understand issues and I was told to mail cranks in after waiting 5 days. Losing riding days sucks.

Would recommend a different brand as I would prefer a quality product, or if not that at least responsive and helpful support.

I have around 200km behind on these cranks on my Orbea Laufey. The cranks have developed clicking sound under load which I tried to fix by taking everything apart, re-greasing and assembling back in.

Didn’t help at all. Otherwise they function well, no issues there. But the clicking under load is driving me mad on nice trails! Every steeper climb, pedaling in rough terrain etc. *Click click creak*! If you’re looking for a good crankset, I’d advice to look elsewhere just due to this issue.

Good solid 24mm cranks. These came with Salsa I purchased in ’19 and I’ve recently transferred them to a more expensive carbon Fuel EX. These look right at home, where other buget-friendly cranks may look out of place on a pricier bike.

Weight is reasonable for the pricepoint, and changing out a chainring is a breeze (with the right tool). Make sure if you remove these from your bike, get the right size crank arm puller.

XT: I have used all of the XT cranks which use pinch bolts for retension and spacers to take up the slack between the arms and bottom bracket, using a plastic adjusting end cap. It works fine but requires more material at the end of the crankshaft to pinch onto.

Also the two bolts require alternating tightening and there is a plastic washer/retainer between the pinch on the arm. Not efficient and somewhat heavier. XTR: The XTR cranks use an end allen-type screw tightening mechanism in the non-drive side arm.

Along with this is a large thumb screw adjuster to take up the slack between the arms. This design seems much better to me and is made to be lighter in weight also. It looks like it will last just as long as the XT in this case; usually I feel XT is more durable than XTR.

Another bonus is the XTR crank also comes with the tool for installing a direct mount chainring. Rides great and looks cool with my XT stuff. So I recommend it.

These Cranks are beautiful and work well but I just can’t recommend something so absurdly priced. $139 for a chain ring?! The certer lock is annoying as you have to have the shimano specific tool. Everyone has to do their own which is another consumer screwing but it works well and is the same tool as the center lock rotors.

At least the BB is a reasonable price.

I put this on my Gary Fisher Marlin mountain bike which I converted to electric. The big chain ring was necessary if I wanted to still pedal with while using pedal assist. I have put over 100 miles on it with no problems.

Vuelta makes great parts for a reasonable price. Forty dollars for this crankset is an outstanding value.

Chosen as a replacement for a damaged crankset. It seems better than the original product. Only problem is it was shipped with only one crank bolt.

I bought what was called a Sugino crankset online—it wasn’t a Sugino. It looks like it was made by Sugino, but is a cheap Chinese knock-off. To 6KU’s credit, they took “Sugino” out of the description on-line and refunded my money immediately.

And told me to keep the crank or throw it away. I’m going to give it a shot, though the workmanship is really primitive and you can see wobble around the center of the casting. It may work perfectly fine, we’ll see.

It’s a $30 after all. AND beware the chain-line doesn’t work with a typical flip-flop hub when the ring mounted on the ‘front’ of the crank. I’m using old 36 hole Suzue hubs and a 103 mm JIS taper spindle.

I bought this so it would look cool and it does not. With the ring on the back of the arms you see the naked flats and bolts sticking out…….

The reason I gave these 5 stars is because they’re a great value for the money. As long as your expectations are realistic, you’ll be happy with this crankset. It’s not a set of 75’s or even RD2’s, but for the money, it’s a pretty darn good set of cranks for your winter commuter or for that parts bin projects you’re trying to get on the road without spending a fortune.

Tough, never had any problems at all. I put in close to 75 miles a week on training rides during race season and abuse them terribly and after 7 years they are still in great shape. MIGHTY 900’S are bombproof!!!!.

Happy with this crankset, it fit better than I expected to my fixie bike. it runs quietly and for my particular bike. a critical cycles pursuit bike. the chain lines up nicely with the rear cog on my new wheels.

I’ve used this on a commuter bike and a track bike. They’re very strong (and quite heavy), but can take a beating. It handles very well on the track. I definitely like how stiff they feel (which is a good thing!) when pushing with a bigger ratio (48×15) than my commuting ratio (48×17).

Nice gloss finish to them and compatible with most square taper bottom brackets. Definitely recommend it as a starting crankset!.

165mm is absolutely a must if you ride fixed. These cranks really dole out the power, given you have a gear ratio that fits your riding style. I ride about 15 miles commuting every day with a 46/18, not counting the miles I ride after work for fun.

I had a 44/18 before and I absolutely feel the difference. Sugino Messenger for the win. Awesome power and look for the money, and they aren’t cheap. Get a set and you’ll be set.

I have install this crankset on my Topstone 1 that had around 150 miles. So it’s a pretty new bike (cassette, chain and derailleur). But after one ride I’ve noticed metal shavings on my chain, cassette and front chainrings.

Before installation I’ve noticed that chainrings on a new crankset are not smooth (have burrs). Not sure if I got a “lemon” or is it a norm but I didn’t see this on any my bikes before. (ibis that has shimano drivetrain and fsa crankset that Topstone came with didn’t have this issue).

Service was excellent, package arrive very quickly and without any issues. Everything was very well packaged so no transit damage. I use a cyclocross bike as my commute bike in all weather. in 6 years I have has 2 hollowtech dual chain ring cranksets fall apart (the cranks have have unbonded from the spider)- this single ring crankset is much simpler and as it is more compact and as a result there is less flex so hopefully it will cope better with the stresses and strains of frequent use.

It was very easy to fit – being Shimano there was no need to change bottom brackets etc and removing the front mech has made the whole bike simpler and will hopefully reduce chain wear too. I have lost some downhill power and I may upgrade to a long rear mech so that I can use the larger cassettes but that depends on how I cope with the Yorkshire hills,.

Awesome set up especially when you can choose different size crank Arms on this crankset. Works excellent with the matching we are cog set. Still has a two by system so you can get up those hills and still get up a great speed when you need to; very solid very well constructed, awesome set up especially for a gravel bike.

I used the Origin8 Crankset to convert a vintage 3×7 mountain bike into a 1×7 rig. I have had good experience with Origin8 products. The crankset works very well. The chainline is within one-half a millimeter of perfection measuring from the middle rear cog to the 38-tooth chainwheel.

The spindle is 113mm. Shifting is smooth and positive and there is no noise or dropped chain when I pedal backwards. The crankset accepts two chainrings, so I may experiment with a 2x set up in the future.

I bought this for my daughter because she has a 47cm road frame with a very low bottom bracket and I originally had a 175mm crank on it which was dragging in the corners. It was unsafe (and the wrong size) so I ordered this 165mm crank to solve that problem.

As it turns out they don’t resize the length of the arm, but instead just move the pedal hole closer to the BB. This is super cheesy. C’mon at least have a few different mold sizes for the crank. I would grind them down and polish, but these are black which adds the complexity of finding matching paint.

Going to return it instead. Picture shows it clearly but I didn’t notice before buying.

Basic cranks for the money, seem to do the job and not too heavy. The chain is 1-2mm further out than the standard Shimano based equivalent but it seems to work well enough after adjusting the front deraillieur appropriately.

Fine for single speed also. A usual range of crank lengths available also, I bought 160mm and you can’t get that from the other brands for dual chainring applications.

Bought to replace an old Miche Primato Xpress crankset (cant seem to buy them any more), this was double the price but has a much better casting and finishing quality, better cut threads, slightly lighter and takes a 144 ring which should be easier to track down a replacement for when the time comes, pleased with it.

Really happy with this crankset. The guys at LuxBmx were friendly too. Ive used it on an E Bike because i need something strong and light but shorter so i can get better pedal clearance. Im not hitting kickers or bowls but the e bike is heavy and i thrash it around enough, and i can tell that these cranks will out live the bike for sure.

I will tell you the opposite, Shimano played a trick and decided to make the system fit all standards in one fell swoop, which brought problems to our users! If you have chain line 49-49. 5 then this system will have 51-52 and in first gear there is a very strong skew! No carriage spacers will help you.

Buy an old system in this case, so as not to run into a problem. I have 1/10 and I had to install another manufacturer the chain is thicker by 2 mm then I got a more or less even chain line. Well, or put spacer rings under the bonds.

And this is a collective farm system. Be more attentive comrades.

I have these as a upgrade to lighten my bike,crank is gud ,no doubt about it,,but the bb keep getting broken,every month i have to change my bb,the creech sound came after 15-20 days ,i tried regreasing but that didnt help.

Its heavy if we compare from old deore set plus finish quality also not that level just feels like lower end crank like acera altus. That’s why price also lower they just stuck deore name for selling.

I don’t get the design. For any kind of aggressive riding it works loose on the left side & I’ve dropped the arm while riding. Even with torque settings & loctite, it would fall off. It’s a bad design from m6200 – m8100 series cranks that has been fixed only on XTR m9100.

It has pinch bolts on the left arm to hold torque, but have failed me several times in more aggressive rides. Also, the spline teeth are very small & easily round off. Again, another issue they fixed only on XTR.

No other brands use the bad pinch bolt design. Another warranty claim being filed. dumb! Just send me XTRs!.

A set it and forget it crankset. Takes a beating and keeps on spinning. I’ve had XX1 carbon cranks and the XT is just more durable. Manufacturers are trying to convince the public that 30mm spindles are needed – they are not.

Shimano 24mm is plenty stiff, even for a 200lbs rider pushing high torque (singlespeed application). 24mm also accommodates eccentric bottom brackets like Wheels Manufacturing and Niner Biocentric 30.

Any easy pick and great value.

Shimano XT continues to be the best performing component group for the money. I have been an XT user since 8 speed! Race ready performance yet durable enough for everyday riding. The arms are stiff with excellent power transfer.

The power meters work fine, happy to have training status in Garmin connect for cycling. Alexander helped me to decide which one can replace my M8000 crankset.

I got a power crank arm for my MTB to help with my training. This one was easy to put on as I already had a XT crank, unbolt one and bolt the other one on. Paired with my garmin 830 and off we went! Came really quickly.

I have this crank set on my sister’s bike [lol]. She runs a 46×17 because she’s small at the moment and I haven’t had any problems with the cranks either. The 130 BCD still holds the chain ring tightly in place, and She rides this bike frequently too.

It’s a good starting pair of cranks if you ask me.

If your here its because you have a track bike or a fixed geared. Honestly these are the best way to go if you are on a budget and if you want what you pay for. They wont leave you stranded like some generic cracks out there.

I’ve got 4iiii Power Meters on most of my bikes. So when the time came to put one on my final bike, I wanted the dual sided version. Turns out this product isn’t compatible with rim brake bikes (like Aero bikes) that have the rear brake positioned underneath the chain stay.

The power meter pod hits the brake on the non-drive side crank. My biggest issue is this isn’t called out in the product description to inform customers. This is a known issue with my brand of bike (I spoke to them directly and they acknowledge this issue) and some clearer descriptions would have helped.

That being said, the delivery of the product was speedy and first class. The returns process was also smooth and a refund was given despite the mishap. I even spoke to Sigma via email & phone, again no issues with them.

They allowed me to send photos of the product to show there was no damage to it before I sent it back.

Bought about 6w ago, easy to fit, downloaded 4iiii app for phone (Garmin too old!) sync’d first time – gives battery fuel gauge and great stats when in use. After workout clear concise graphs. Power meters are very discreet fitting to the left crank arm and inside the large chain ring, two really neat units.

Works well and can pair BLE and ANT+ at the same time. Really happy to have a power meter on my bike outside. Pretty easy to change the crankset and to set up. Worth the outlay if you are a stat person.

This is a carbon arm crankset for a 1x bike (meaning no front derailleur). It is very well engineered, and very light at a reasonable price. This version comes with a 110 BCD spider, which (with a bit of effort) is detachable, allowing replacement of the stock 42 tooth with other chain rings.

Installation is easy, just slide it through a GXP bottom bracket (allowing for the 24mm d side to 22mm n-d side), and lock down the non-driveside arm with an 8mm hex key.

I shop hard when Im looking for something I want. If you are familiar with SRAM, then you know what Red is. This is the best deal I have found on the internet. The crank came in the manufacture box with all paperwork.

All warranty is good. Installed with new twist tight ceramic bottom bracket. Had to put some washers between the BB and the crank, but twist tight BB sticks out a little more than press-fit. Tested out with eTap and performance is as expected from SRAM.

110 BCD so it can take a variety of chainrings. I would have preferred to be able to buy the crankset without a ring, but I now have a 40t and a 38t and can swap out for the 42t it came with depending on the route.

As part of a 1x drivetrain with a 12-42 cassette (or even better an 11-42 if you have an XD driver freehub body and cassette) it gives up very little on either end and has all of the commonly used gears on a compact double with a 12-32 cassette.

It’s carbon and lighter than the Rival, 105 or Ultegra equivalents and though the GXP bottom bracket it is designed for have a reputation for less than long service life, they are cheap and easy to replace as well.

I’ve used these on three bikes I’ve built now and have been very pleased. If I build another, I’ll likely choose another Force 1 GXP crankset for it.
