20 Best Crankset For Fixed Gear (2023 Updated)

Bought this to replace an early 90’s Shimano Deore LX chainset and to stick with the good old tapered bottom bracket. Cranks are a lot chunkier and feel stiffer than the out going cranks. Shifts really well from one ring to the next.

This SRAM product has steel ring gears and aluminum crank arms. I installed it on an old Specialized Rock Hopper. It replaced a Sugino all aluminum square taper crankset. I found that the Sugino Crankset wore out its aluminum gears and the bicycle’s steel chain prematurely.

Aluminum and steel grind on each other because the aluminum forms aluminum oxide, which is a very tough abrasive, and is actually a compound used in making cut -off wheels for cutting steel. My bicycle has an ISO, or European square bottom design, as opposed to a JIS, or Japanese design.

There is a slight difference between the two designs. This SRAM crankset fit well on my bicycle, and with a new chain, the bicycle is functioning like new. The teeth on the ring gears grab the chain well, and there is no slippage.

It’s not so easy to find the right replacement crankset for an older 8 speed MTB. I was looking for another Truvative like the one which came with my bike, and didn’t know it was made by SRAM. Finally found this which actually says Truvative on the outer chainring.

It is only slightly different than the original one, in that the two smaller chainrings each have 2 fewer teeth. Thats not a problem, as that’s just going to lower the gear ratio for the steeper hills.

I used a Shimano113mm square taper bottom bracket and it fits perfectly. Also fitted it with SRAM X4 shifters and derailleurs. I’m happy with it. Thanks SRAM !.

This crankset is chunkier than it’s predecessor. The drive side crank arm appears a couple of mm thicker. I don’t know if this is to address the well known debonding failures of the 6800 version. ( I’ve had 2 fail on me).

Time will tell as I know folk who’ve had debonding with the 8000 as well. The thicker crank arm means there’s a tight clearance between the inner face of the drive side crank arm and the outer face of the front derailleur cage.

(R8000 FD). So stick rigidly to the Shimano FD installation (pdf) to set it up correctly without rub or strike. Fantastic, reliable, quick delivery from Sigma as always.

4 years new Shimano ultegra crankset design malfunction. The front piece separated from the rear piece without breaking but cannot be repaired. Ridden and maintained. A world wide problem. Shimano say it isn’t a design issue.

Spend another $500 for the part? How long will it last?.

Would be 5 stars, but the crank had several scratches on it and the non-drive side crank was loose in the box. Teeth had light, but visible signs of wear. Looks like it had been fitted to another bike at some point.

Still works as new and is fine.

Good: works well if you don’t do many miles. Not so good: Sometimes chain ring bolts loosen due to prolonged vibration over many miles of cycling. Shimano has moved towards having overmoulded or captured nuts as part of their chain ring design.

If you cross thread your bolts or shear the thread by accidently overtightening then the whole crank set needs replacing. Historically the bolts were ‘free’ and were conveniently individually replacable, allowing maintenance in the field, so to speak.

I regard the ‘newer’ designs as having blatant built-in obsolescence, which will cost you $$$ compared to some other designs.

I will be honest, I generally don’t take the time to write reviews, but with the amount of time and abuse I’ve put these things through, I should probably take a minute and share. To start, I’ve been running RF cranks off and on since 2002.

I started on a set of North Shore DH cranks and they were practically faultless. Fast forward to today, where I’ve ridden dozens of different styles and brands, finally settling with the atlas. I made the switch from RF SixC cranks, which were amazing cranks, but just couldn’t last the test if time or the abuse of DH racing.

Unfortunately several sets have met their demise under me. RF has been amazing in their rider support, and always kept me going. Eventually I decided to make the switch back to alloy, and landed on a set of Atlas.

I’ve had the same set for the past two seasons. I’ve broken a frame, countless wheels, and a couple sets of handlebars in that time. The cranks showing their battle scars, but are as true as the day I bolted them on.

I have a second set sitting in my garage as a backup getting covered in a thick layer of dust, and at this point are more of a decoration. My one complaint if I had to say is the preload collar is nylon.

I would love to see am alloy version, and would gladly pay the premium for one, even as an add on. Overall these get 5 stars for their simplicity is design, ease of installation and maintenance, and good looks.

The shorter cranks are definitely easier on the knees and a lot fewer peddle strikes but it sould come with a 1mm spindle spacer or two. The preload adjuster needed to be turned until there was only one thread left engaged.

Seems to be holding but I would have prefered a little tighter fit between the cranks and BB, spacers would solve that problem at virtually no cost and give you an additional option to adjust the chainline.

A nice light well built set of crank arms. And in some interesting colors. With the Raceface CINCH crank gear mounting, which is super easy to use (if you have the spline drive tool). But, the cranks have a slightly sharp inner edge,,, Raceface machining didn’t round that off before annodizing? disappointing, usually their finish is really good.

I crashed and bent my crank on a Trek Powerfly 8 with a Bosch CX motor. I needed a new crank so I went for the SRAM EX1. The old crank was a Micanda and it required a puller tool to remove. The new SRAM EX1 only needed a hex key to mount/unmount it.

The SRAM EX1 looked far sturdier than the Micanda but the SRAM EX1 was 8. 9 ounces and the Micanda, with mounting screw, was 8. 1 ounces. I’m happy with the new crank but it did add 1. 6 ounces to the total weight of the bike.

These are quality cranks, work great on my Jainism full 7, solid and nice!y machined.

I’ve wanted a pair of these cranks since I was a kid growing trying to make money to buil dmy BMX bikes. they are exactly how I remember them…

Redline flight crank, a name way back over 30 years, has been at its peak, and still is rated #1. No other crank set in my opinion really can compare. Sure, there are other crank sets that are copied to Redline specs, and or looks, but if they aren’t true Redline, then there it is, it speaks for itself! By far the best at quality, weight, and function!.

Flight cranks have always been the standard for quality equipment and hasnt changed. i have wanted a set for more years yhan i care to go into today. they are excellent product at an affordable price! why would anybody not have a set?.

Very happy with this crankset. Upgraded from a GX aluminum crankset but didn’t want to drop over $400 for a carbon crank. This isn’t the lightest crankset, like the XX1 or XO1, but it’s not that far off.

Going from an aluminum GX crankset with GXP BB to this crankset with the new DUB BB, the weight savings was exactly 100g. (oh and I moved from 175mm to 170mm crank arms at the same time) This crankset looks fantastic, but aesthetics aside, the most noticeable thing for me what the stiffness.

It’s notably more stiff while pedaling and especially under hard efforts out of the saddle, like downhill sprints. It feels like all of my effort is translated into forward momentum with very little flex.

I can’t say if this is because of the carbon layup, or perhaps it’s the DUB spindle, I don’t know. My old GX cranks was a smaller diameter GXP BB version. The bearing pre-load that they put on these is also really great.

Simple concept to dial in just the right amount of tension on the bearings for butter smooth operation with zero play. Do note that if you aren’t already running a DUB bottom bracket, you will need to get one.

They don’t cost much and the BB weighed substantially less than my GXP BB. Also note that if you are using a threaded BSA style BB, you will need a different 12-tooth BB tool for the DUB bottom bracket.

It’s NOT the same tool as the GXP or shimano BB. If you are thinking about a new crankset, throw down. This thing rocks. Oh, and don’t forget the crank boots for the ends.

I am not a carbon crank guy, this crank comes stock on many Sram builds. Its really heavy at 700g. Its very stiff, as it should be at that weight. The cranks are one of the places where you only notice the weight on the scale.

I am not a believer in Carbon cranks. on anything but the lightest duty bikes and riders you see way too many failures. Having the pedal spindle pull out of your carbon crank upon landing isnt good. It also happens all the time.

These came stock on my bike and I am pleased enough. I will probably move them to a new frame when I move on. 3 stars is because they use an Aluminum alloy bolt in the spindle clamp and this part should be steel for longevity.

If this alloy bolt cross threads into the steel spindle , it will turn the cranks into a paper weight. At this price point make it a steel to steel clamping surface. Otherwise these cranks are solid and better durability and stiffness than other budget cranks like NX and SX.

The time had come to upgrade my trail bike from the alloy cranks that it came with, and I drooled over the sexy carbon or polished, forged whatever offerings out there from other manufacturers (you know who I’m talking about.

), but just couldn’t swallow the buy-in. But I found these, and they look the part, they’re light enough, burly enough, and best of all, I didn’t have to buy another bottom bracket! Win, win, win.

I’ve bought this item twice for my road bikes. I’ve broken the drive side crank in half on 2 different sets. Each set only lasted 4k miles. Do not buy. These will break on you and you will crash hard when it happens.

Great set of short cranks, used as a double for a road/triathlon bike (with a new square taper BB). No shifting issues, and pedals great! You don’t need to spend a lot of money to right-size your cranks!.

This is supposed to be SRAM’s top end product and at £300 it needs to be right. Unfortunately the one I received had a flaw. it had what looked like machine swarf in the threads for the pedal – consequently the pedal would not screw in.

Then started the long protracted process of sending photos to Sigma, returning the crank, they then sending it to SRAM, SRAM in turn inspecting it, agreeing it was defect, issuing a new one to Sigma, then Sigma to me.

Told it would be delivered next day (Saturday) before 12 noon. but DPD delivered on the Monday – Nightmare from start to end. This is very poor from SRAM – surely these are inspected at quality control before sending out? I’ve had no apology or compensation.

Got this chainset while switching from a 2×10 (mixed SRAM/Shimano) to 1×11 (all SRAM) setup, and couldn’t be happier. Install was dead simple (having a torque wrench took any guesswork out of the equation) and it has worked perfectly.

I really like the minimal, utilitarian aesthetic of the Apex 1 chainset, which suits my gravel bike much better than my previous Tiagra set did. I was wavering between Apex and RIVAL chainset, but ultimately liked the look of Apex one slightly better.

The other person reviewing the SRAM Apex 1 crankset and groupset, saying they dont work together, is a complete and utter idiot. These components work great together. I have them on three of my bikes and have no issues.

Maybe learn how to install and adjust your derailleur and itd wrk better.

purchased for custom gravel build when parts were exceedingly hard to find. not sure I will stick with this size ring, but overall happy with look, feel and performance.

Though the set was little on the heavy side but the crankset is very solid build and beautiful, the BB that came with the set was Shimano BB-RS500 (and NOT SM-BB4600 per the description). However, I think the BB-RS500 is a improved and newer version over the BB4600.

It took me 45 min once I got home to convert my triple chain ring set up to 1x with new chain and 11-31 cassette . Then 20km test ride. Smooth as silk.

If you ride BMX and dont know about the thunderbolt cranks you need to crawl out from under that rock!!! These things are the best! Solid and smooth and easy to install

Awesome, super simple, well thought out, great warranty, fair price, vomes with the bottom bracket and spacers/hardware, i made the mistake of purchasing a seperate bottom bracket kit. The crank arms dont rub my shoes like my stock ones did.

Once of the best in the biz. Great product, great warranty. Super strong, & comes with everything you need except sprocket. 22mm BB included & all the spacers you could possibly need.

I had another 30 mm crank set that seemed like I always had to monkey around with for creaking. I bit the bullet and went for a Hope crank and direct mount chain ring and I’m so glad I did so. One thing to note on the Hope cranks is that unlike some other companies Hope includes the tools you will need to install and uninstall the cranks on your bike which is a nice touch.

Knowing what I know now after using this crankset I’m going to purchase another set for a frame I’m building up.

As expected, with the 30 mm shaft, these cranks are stiff and solid. Well designed and easily installed if close attention is paid to instructions. The bearing pre-load adjuster is exceptional. And they came with all necessary and specific installation tools.

The ease of buying equipment from this shop is topnotch. The customer service is also amazing. The only drawback being the minor hiccup about the shipping fee being not included in the price but it takes nothing from the complete amazingness and ease of buying from the shop.
