20 Best Cranking Battery For Boat (2023 Updated)

The OPTIMA D34M is an amazing deep cycle battery. It’s durable, dependable and has lots of reserve capacity for normal outboard starting – I wouldn’t have anything less in my boat. To give you some idea how good these batteries are.

Many years ago, I found one dumped at the local tip. It wasn’t damaged, so I took it home and tried charging it. It charged fine, so I fitted it to by boat (50HP Honda outboard) and it lasted TEN MORE YEARS before I replaced it with a new one.

That was 4 years ago and the “new” one is still going strong. I only use my boat 10 times per year so the outboard takes some cranking to start sometimes (old fuel in the carbies). I have just one outboard and one battery on my boat.

It’s important, when I’m 10Km out to sea, to know that the outboard will start everytime, and the D34M is the best battery I’ve used. I told my brother about my D34M and this purchase is for him – his old boat battery died after nearly 3 years use and he too reckons the D34M will be good value in the long run.

I have to admit when I bought this blue Optima back in Sep, 2011 I didnt think it was going to last 9years. Fast forward to 2020 and it still holds decent charge and powers my 2006 Honda Acccord. I have the yellow top on my Odyssey and that has been working fine for over 10years.

Extremely satisfied with both the blue and yellow tops, well done Optima. Due to Covid, I have parked both these cars and I trickle charge these to full every 6weeks or so. My other 2 cars when the time comes to replace, I will with Optima.

Haven’t had it long enough to rate it, but i do have it and so far the battery is doing what it is supposed to do. I am using it as a aux battery for my silverado to have direct power to my accessories IE: Radios without interruption on vehicle start up, this fits the bill and works great for that also if the primary battery for some reason fails this battery will start the vehicle and use it for primary until failed one is replaced.

I do have a dual battery switching set up but not from summit.

I received my Optima Blue Top battery within 24hrs of ordering, with free shipping! Awesome! 4 stars because you must be aware that this is a marine starting battery and not a true deep cycle battery.

It is very confusing, but according to Optima site the black case is for starting, and the gray case is the deep cycle product. This one is a black case, and as such is for starting. I purchased the battery for my trailer lights, for which I wanted the battery to be deep cycle.

Not Summit’s fault as they called it out as a starting battery, but Optima’s confusing “Blue Top” description, and my not understanding that all Blue Top’s are not deep cycle. So far the battery is working fine after about 30 days.

We’ll see how long it lasts being used for my trailer interior lights.

I needed a new hold down bracket for this battery. The space in my boat was perfect for this upgrade. The available power is so much better than the previous group 24. Time will be the biggest determining factor in how well the battery performs, but initial opinion is that the increase in power allowed me to troll all day with all electronics powered up, and the battery was still going strong.

I could finally start my main engine without the chart plotter cutting out due to low power. First time ever!.

This is the best group 31 size AGM battery I have found. It’s listed at 220 minutes Reserve Capacity (RC) and 1150 CCA (cold cranking amps). Most other AGM group-31 batteries are less than 200 minutes RC and less than 950 CCA.

I use this battery in the coach of my van camper RV, and this battery keeps my refrigerator running all nigh long. And the battery has the power to be a backup starter battery to my vehicle in case the main engine battery goes dead.

I really like the AGM technology because it doesn’t corrode my terminals, doesn’t spill, and doesn’t need periodic water fillings. Great battery!.

These are non-return items. I didnt double check what style batteries and got the wrong terminal design. I was able to make them work with terminal adapters though.

I replaces 2 batteries in my Seahunt CC. They work fine for less then 2 months and one battery went bad and drained the other. I took them back and was given a replacement set and here we are again, one dead battery and will not charge at all.

I use my boat weekly so it’s not due use. I am returning the again and going to try something else. Price was reasonable on these but you get what you pay for. These are garbage and I will never trust this brand again.

nice battery and power. only thing wrong was no nuts were included and i wasted 2. 5 hours finding the right size of nuts for the battery post. they were size 10 metric. no way to contact anyone to find that out.

that was the main down fall. otherwise lone the batteries themselves. only.

I called in to make sure this was the battery that I needed for my Bass Cat Puma. The lady that answered was extremely nice and polite and answered all my questions. Great Customer service and the battery is a beast powers my 250 Mercury and all my electronics.

With the way the website is setup, the lead acid batteries come up with the AGM. I meant to get the AGM, but went ahead and used this because of the hassel it would have been to return it.

Received batteries (used for bow mount electric motor. These are replacing Optimax batteries of the same size. I put a “top off” charge on them right away. These are utilized on my center console lake boat.

I will evaluate their hold a standing charge ability while waiting for ice out. My real tests are in the future; first how is their power for a full day of fishing and secondly what is their total life in years of use.

Love the Optima battery. This battery replaced the Optima battery purchased in 2010 for our boat. As soon as it was connected, I tried starting and all systems fired up.

Would not take a full charge. Great battery normally.

I purchased 5 Lifeline 4D Deep Cycle and 2 Group 31 Starting Batteries. I went with Lifeline based on great product reviews and reputation and I have not been disappointed. I went with the Battery Guys mostly because they had the best price and free shipping.

Initially, I was confused by the different label on the battery. I have been a loyal customer of Sears Diehard Marine Batteries for many years. Sadly, it was gone now and I heard that the Diehard was picked up by Advance Auto Parts.

After I got the batteries, I saw a different label on it. It turned out they are the same, and are manufactured by Diehard. Glad to see the band quality in it. The best part is that these batteries charges and discharges at relative stable temperature and takes less effort to service.

I bought the battery so I could start several cars I have that were sitting. When I tried it on the first car, the solenoid just chattered. I put it on a charger for several hours. Then it was able to turn the motor over.

They must have been on the shelf a while. hence the sale price. It’s a marine battery. Make sure you have it fully charged before going boating.

This was for my boat. Installed and motor would still not crank, so I assumed there was another problem since it was a new battery. After driving back to the store and purchasing a $45 battery selector/isolation switch and installing it.

still nothing! Drove back home and got a battery charger and hooked to the battery only to find it would not take a charge! Drove back to the store with the “new” battery and it checked bad with their scanner.

They brought out another new battery which I had them test while I was there. Because of the battery not being tested originally I spent most of the day, driving over 40 miles, and purchasing a $45 switch I didn’t need! I have been a loyal customer for years and after all of this no one seemed even the least bit apologetic or sympathetic.

Brought home to install in motorhome and discovered from sticker on case that battery is seven months old. Voltage tested at 12. 4, but load test showed battery is good. I did not want to drive a 20 mile round trip to attempt an exchange, so I charged the NEW battery several hours at ten amps to bring to full charge before installation.

I carefully kept the receipt and will be sure to load test before one year warranty is up. A new battery should be tested and fully charged when sold. It’s disappointing that Advance did not to that.

I bought 4 Die Hard group 27dc2 batteries in December of 2020 for 4 automatic clay bird throwers. Two batteries placed on 2 Atlas at300 machines and the other 2 batteries placed on 2 Lincoln 2002 Sporter models.

They throw about 1500 birds a month on each thrower without being charged only once a month. I put them on charge at the end of the month for about 5 hours each on 2 battery tender chargers one on each charger and they are fully charged for the next month.

It takes about 10 to 11 hours to do all 4 batteries because I am only using 2 chargers. I have no complaints with them and they seem to work very well every time I use them. Would recommend them for what I use them for.

They are also maintenance free which makes life a little easier.

I needed to replace the batteries in my RV and AutoZone was near where the RV was stored. I tried them and we greatly pleased. They were busy (so obviously doing a good job for others) and I was well taken care of.

They guided me to the right batteries, only had one in stock so needed to order a second. When shortly after it came in I picked up the batteries and installed them. I’m not very automotive but will visit this store again.

I have had various types of boats for the last 20years, (17-21 ft range). I’ve tried several types of batteries and find that the duralast batteries last the longest. Boat batteries absorb lots of impacts from wave action and it will cause premature failure.

Duralast batteries last several years as opposed to one or 2 years for other batteries. In my experience Duralast are the best reasonably priced batteroes for boat use.

IšverstiShow in original languageI researched this for months as there isn’t great material on Lithium batteries as replacement for traditional lead style. I was running 3 lead batteries 100ah for Minn Kota 112.

I wanted to reduce weight and after months of research I took leap of faith with drop to 60ah batteries for less weight and expense. I also ended up purchasing new charging station called Noco Genius Genpro 10×3.

The install was simple and works identical to old lead battery style. Batteries charge much quicker than lead style, probably takes 3 hours for full charge, another large difference is that lithium batteries deliver max power until they die versus lead which begin losing power right away.

I was able to remove over 100 pounds of weight from my boat with the switch and my last boating trip I decided to run trolling motor hard all day to see what it would take to kill them. After 6 hours of trolling cranks and lindy rigs the batteries died and I went in to recharge them for another run later that evening.

On a prior trip I used them extensively for anchor lock and was not able to kill them after full day of use. Overall very happy with purchase and was nervous moving from 100ah to 60ah for my 36V system but happy with that decision as well.

Needs a Lithium Charger, and I purchased a NOCO Genius 5 amp. for $83. 00 and it recharges in about 6 hours to 13 volts. Care to not weed up your motor to a dead stop in weeds, as the battery can/will burn out a 30 amp fuse.

Carry extra fuses as a precaution. I fish heavy cover and grass mats and bury the motor often in a tangle of weeds. RipTide 45 and this grp 24 Tracker Lithium pulls my Gheenoe at over 4 mph on high in open water.

worth the expense if it lasts as advertised.

It is true. As a result power indicators showed full power until my trolling motor shut off in the deep water channel. One last note. 60 amp hours is 60 amp hours is whether it is, lead acid, agm or in this case lithium.

My battery is going on 3 years. Still holding at 12. 9 volts at rest. Starts my single outboard and runs live well, 2 fish finders and stereo all day long. I have an onboard charger which I use always but so far for me.

this is a great marine battery.

In initial use, it works fine (house battery for small RV, including starting generator). The prior NorthStar AGM battery, essentially the same model, lasted 9 years – hoping for similar this time.

I had two of these in my cabin boat. Left them in for a winter and they would no longer hold a charge because they had dropped below recoverable voltage. Figured that the problem was my own carelessness.

I bought yet another of these and placed it in my boat (trailered at my house) and kept it continually charging on a pro mariner charger. After about fourteen months it will only hold 12. 2 volts, which is a sixty percent charge.

Considering the high cost, I have now gone back to standard acid, marine batteries. They do not die quite so easily. Solid 12 volt batteries are great for a road vehicle that is routinely used. Don’t think they are quite as good for occasional marine use and certainly not worth the additional high cost.

You’re going to spend $40 per year on a battery whether you buy a cheap one or a a good one like these. A cheap battery will cost about $100 and last 2-3 years. An Optima will cost around $200 and last 5-6.

In fact I had a battery bank of 6 of them last for 9 years. So why Optima? Simple: they don’t off gas hydrogen, they’re rugged and they’re maintenance free. I’ve used Optima batteries for 13 years – since they were first manufactured in Aurora, Colorado.

In fact, I still use one of those oldies as a starting battery on my houseboat. It just won’t die. Yes, Optima quality took a nose dive when they moved manufacturing out of Colorado. In fact, CarQuest quit carrying them because of all the problems.

But those days are history. I recently started using one in my pop-up camper. It can sit for 6 weeks and still register almost 13 volts. So what is their weakness? Charging. All AGM batteries must be charged with a charger having a dedicated AGM charging cycle.

I keep all of mine charged with solar panels, but those solar charge controllers have AGM compatibility. Also, many Optima batteries can be ‘revived’ when they appear dead or when they won’t hold a charge by using the Optima brand battery charger.

You’re going to spend $40 per year on a battery anyway, so why not eliminate maintenance, cut the replacement hassle in half and double the lifespan? In short, Optima’s are once again excellent batteries that will give years of service if charged properly.
