I had a 9700K OC to 5. 2 on Noctua dh-15 Chromax with no issues. I needed more threads for streaming so put in a 9900k. Always had random BSOD and almost never ran over the base clock so I put an all core OC to 4.

7. Temps initially never ran over 80C then started spiking to over 100C! Removed the OC and things never got better. Swapped MB, reloaded OS, still Bsod. swapped the 9700k back in and no problems. After contacting Intel for a replacement they proceeded to tell me I voided the warranty by overclocking it.

After brow beating them for almost 2 weeks about their marketing and advertising the “k” models as unlocked for more performance and headroom they agreed to replacement. Still I lost almost 6 weeks of use of my computer plus troubleshooting time.

(After all, how often does a CPU fail. ) Buyer beware, these chips are getting hard to find and my replacement is a Chinese market rebox, they may not be available for replacement if you get a bad one.

I paired this chip with a Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Pro Motherboard. I knew this was the processor I wanted due to its high core count and top of the line performance. It did not disappoint. I am seeing performance upwards of 4.

9 – 5ghz with this CPU on all 8 cores. One con of this CPU versus the other i Series chips is that it doesn’t come with a stock cooler. Realistically, you wouldn’t want to use it with one if it did come with it but this did cause me to spend a little extra on the build overall and spend more time researching what cooler to get.

I ended up choosing the Arctic Liquid Freezer ii 240mm and it was a great choice. My CPU never goes above mid 50s Celsius even under load. However, I had to do a lot of research into CPU coolers before I found something that was right for my build.

I’m glad I chose the motherboard and cpu first since it ultimately impacted every other part decision from then on due to the i9-9900K’s reputation of running a bit hot. I would strongly recommend an All In One(AIO) CPU water cooler for the i9.

This did also influence my choice of case because I needed something that could mount a radiator. In summary, it’s a very powerful processor that fulfills my work and gaming needs despite its now being 2 years old.

If you’re considering this CPU make sure you do your research on what cooler you will need for it since it does NOT come with one.

In many cases, it is the fastest CPU in the world, right out of the box. I have not overclocked this chip and I am not going to. This thing already boosts to 4. 7Ghz and holds at 4. 2-4. 3Ghz with all 32 logical cores at %100.

After a 24-hour stress test and this thing was sitting at 63c (I have phenomenal cooling, but still. that is Incredible. S. I got this board with a Ryzen 1700 when AM4 released. I paired it with expensive (and Awesome) G. Skill Flare X Samsung B-die memory bc RAM compatibility and getting maximum performance was tricky back then.

The AM4 platform has grown up so much though. These days even my old X370 motherboard will take just about any RAM kit with no issues; making it a very affordable platform with an unbelievably varied offering of economical and high-performance parts.

Extremely grateful for what AMD has delivered with AM4 and with the 3950X. Bravo.

I’m very happy I purchased it. I also installed a Be Quiet duel fan cooler, that keeps the Cpu at 52c / 53c at idle. On the bench stress test, the high temp was 56c. For those DIY’s just follow the basics’ clean your motherboard mount for your CPU, always be careful handling your CPU during install.

Double-check your Bios and if needed download new bio’s to a thumb drive for your Bios Flash. I’ve built over 30 computers for family and friends and upgrade mine about every two years. I make all my builds future proof for upgrades when needed.

Let your budget be your friend’ spend your money on CPU and Graphics card. A middle price range Motherboard work just fine, you don’t have to spend big money on an MB to get a fantastic all-around home computer.

I recently built my first workstation. I went with parts that were intentionally a little overkill BUT it handles any CPU driven task like its nothing. I have my 3950x paired with a NZXT x63 280mm AIO in a Thermaltake open air case so its not like heat can build up.

It acts more as a test bench. That being said, I think I’ve only pushed it above 70C once while rendering some hefty Rhino3DGrasshopper designs. It usually hovers around 35-45C depending on workload.

Rendering the same design in my old PC (a first gen Microsoft studio 2nd tier) the Grasshopper algorithm took an average of 55min to process. With this new build it took maybe 3 minutes. The thing is a monster.

I don’t game at all so it remains untested there.

In my heart, I wanted bragging rights with my new computer, but in the end, I chose not to pay for them. I suppose the child in me would have preferred an unlocked processor generating 140 watts on a 2066 socket, with water cooling, etc.

None of that power would ever have mattered to my actual use. And, I did not really need the computer to be a supplemental furnace to heat my office. Back in the day, when I bought a new computer — even if all I wanted to do was run Office — I struggled to buy as much power as I possibly could.

(Yes, children, there was a time when new computers might struggle with a large Excel spreadsheet!) But, my last new computer was a Core2Duo, so as slow as the advances in computing power have been over the last decade, this was going to be a step up, though the immediate motivation was to avoid total collapse in my aging system which was still mostly good enough.

I wanted to make sure that I got over the threshold where I could play around with a VR headset if I took a mind to and where my Cities Skylines metropolis could continue to grow. With six cores (wow!) and the ability to run a single core at 4.

0 GHz under demand and ALL six cores together at 3. 8 GHz, this processor can bring a lot of power to bear. But, I cannot say I see a huge difference in routine daily performance over my aging Core2Duo.

Webpages and spreadsheets are not a challenge for either computer. My new system’s m. 2 960 EVO SSD, compared to an 840 EVO in the old, has had more effect on the responsiveness of the system in daily use.

In a raw processing power task, like compressing a zip file or processing some transformation in photoshop or running a physics benchmark, this processor will lag behind its big brothers, like an unlocked i5-8600K or an i7- 8700K and pretty much proportionately to its rated speed and number of available threads (those other processors have hyperthreading.

) And, of course, the difference from the ol’ Core2Duo is remarkable enough thought I am already forgetting the past. BUT — and this is the big BUT that matters to the gamer on a budget — in an actual game, with a high-end videocard (say a GTX 1080) in the system this processor will do the job more than adequately.

Find a reviewer who has benchmarked actual games on a system with a high-end videocard, and you will see that this processor lags only slightly behind the theoretically more muscular processors in game performance.

Of course, the videocard is doing the real work, but the point is that if the goal is game performance and this processor’s price and the fact that it does not require an elaborate water cooler and an open window in winter to operate, makes it possible for you to afford a really good videocard, then this processor can be part of an effective budget allocation strategy to get to a first-class gaming system.

Like i said earlier, one of my goals was to play around with VR. And, for that I need to be able to afford to ad a decent gamer videocard, which would be hard to justify if I have busted the budget on the base system.

And, that was my reasoning.

I’m happy to see Walmart finally offering PC components online. To my knowledge they hadn’t until recently and after lots of research, I determined that the i5-8400 was the perfect chip for my PC needs (multi-tasking work computer and light gaming) and budget.

Just about your entire budget and build revolves around choosing the right processor and after considering just about every chip, I felt like I just had to have the 8400. Unfortunately, everywhere I looked online this particular chip was unavailable.

So when I found out Walmart had it in stock and at a great price, I was flabbergasted. So I had to give Walmart a thumbs up for coming through for me. As for the processor itself, it’s incredible. I believe Coffee Lakes are only compatible with Windows 10 but that’s not a bad thing for me personally.

It does very well with multitasking network heavy programs and the synergy of the OS and i5-8400 is something special. I ought to take a star off for the Intel cooler it comes with (three of the four legs cracked down the middle when I installed it) but I didn’t want to because there’s no doubt this processor is a great value for the price and in my opinion the perfect processor for a large number of applications.

So thank you Walmart and Intel for the great product and service.

Is say it’s great at everything, and it is. However, for the same price, an AMD 1600 and $70 motherboard will outperform this chip in productivity tasks that take advantage of it’s SMT. However, the chip iteself costs less, and there are other advantages to having the better board.

Cheap AMD boards tend to only have 4 SATA connections and other differences. The lack of SMT/HT means that you don’t have to worry about losing performance in applications that don’t play nicely with it, though those are few and far between these days.

On the flip side, not having SMT leaves a lot of potential performance on the table. But to get SMT/HT on this chip, your talking i7. In this case, going up to the i7-8700 costs $130 more, though it also gains you about 600Mhz.

For many, that $130 is better spent on other components. But at about a 40% discount, the i5-8400 is a steal. As has been repeated many times, this is the perfect gaming chip in this day in age. Most games use 2-6 threads.

Unless your running SLI, you don’t need more power to feed a modern single GPU. This platform isn’t intended for SLI anyways, so moot point. Most gamers will team this chip up with a GTX1050 to GTX1070 series or equivalent AMD card.

And this is perfect for this! If you want 6 cores and hyperthreading you can spend a few extra bucks and go with AMD, or a lot more and get an i7. But this is a budget 6 core chip. I was an owner of a Phenom II X4 955 & Phenom II 1090T back in the day.

Having the 6 cores instead of 4 was great for multi-tasking or heavily threaded work loads. Since most applications use 2-4 cores, this gives you the ability to run two to three things at once with little to no performance loss.

Glad to see this level of performance coming in at this price point.

Took a while to get the customized components assembled, but given the current market it makes sense. I also received some surprise free upgrades. Received a 3200mhz ram kit instead of 3000mhz, and a seagate Baracuda 1tb instead of a Adata 960gig ssd.

No communication on these so it was a pleasant surprise as I was going through and checking it over. The cable management was excellent front and back, well run and excess cables neatly tucked away and tied back.

The packing was excellent both outside the case, and inside. Double boxed with several expandable air bags. All components were in place and it did work right out of the box. Small issues. The pcie retaining tab for the gpu was detatched andloose in the case, the slot and card were not damaged but the tab was not attached.

Quick fix not a real issue. Also Xmp was not enabled out of the box, I didn’t pay for the overclocking, but I’d expect a computer from CLXgaming to come with it enabled. Again quick fix. Overall very happy with the looks, performance, and quality of the build, the provided 3dmark score on the desktop was accurate to what I received.

I purchased the product due to the favorable price at the time and the need for the 3900X as a hand-me-down upgrade on a secondary system. I was expecting a more modest performance lift: 15% – 25% under most applications, 10% – 35% under highly threaded applications, perhaps as high as 50% in some standout games with most being significantly lower.

Reality is the 5900X is more capable of using the thermal headroom than the 3900X. With a custom loop is the 5900X was able to boost 1-4 cores around 5. 1GHz (no overclocking) on an MSI Prestige X570 Creation motherboard.

The exact same setup allowed the 3900X to hit around 4. 8GHz-4. 9GHz for a single threaded application. Both processors were paired with the same nVidia GeForce 1080Ti, DDR4-3600 memory, custom water cooling loop and MSI Prestige X570 Creation motherboard.

To give a best case example: the 5900X was able to boost my 3DMarks CPU score from just over 18000 to just under 36000. The overall 3DMarks score went from about 9000 to about 14000. Highly threaded applications improved closer to 50%.

Moderately threaded applications (4 threads), improved by nearly 80%. Lightly threaded applications improved by around 35% on average. Keep in mind that this is not scientific. There was no clean installation of software or the likes.

I just swapped out the processor and started testing. My working theory as to why the results differ somewhat (lower single threaded, higher multi-threaded) from reviews I’ve read is that, with my custom water loop, the difference in frequency for a single thread was less than expected (the 3900X boosted a little higher than normal) where the difference in frequency for multiple threads was higher than expected.

Went from a 3600x to this. Prior system config had a number of issues, some were known causes (5700xt + PCIe gen 4, looking at you). With new setup, there were improvements across the board. Everything is smoother and faster.

Used primarily for gaming and photo editing, I was a little surprised at the improvement it brought to gaming. The fps improved noticeably, but more importantly everything also became smoother, fewer stutters and moments of lower frame count.

I don’t think the 3600x should have been bottlenecking anything on the prior configuration. I was able to rule out thermal paste or CPU cooler issues (and used the same on the new CPU) so whether some problems I had before were due to bad luck on the CPU lot draw, or improvements in other areas of CPU tech between generations, etc.

the end result was that the machine actually feels like it’s now high end, especially after upgrading the GPU now as well. Bottom line is that this is a great processor. It was hard to justify at the prices when released, but once it dropped below 400 after the 5800x3d cpu came out, I couldn’t pass it up.

It should last me some years before I feel the need to jump to the new socket. If you’re already on AM4 this is easily worth it, but if you need a full new system and can wait a bit, it might be better to get the newer gen socket when it comes out.

Pros: At the time of writing, the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X is the fastest gaming CPU in the world – according to chief competitor Intel! That makes it functionally THE fastest CPU you can get your hands on.

Sure the Ryzen 9 5950 has a few (4)more cores, but not a higher stock clock speed. This CPU is so insanely fast it’ll give you a nose bleed just thinking about it! It’s astonishing & thrilling. Cons: This is a power hungry monster, consuming 142 watts of electricity.

That results in lots of heat, requiring faster fans (more noise) plus the running costs. This compelled how to learn how to undervolt the Bios. Think of it as the opposite of over clocking. By doing this, I have power consumption down to 65 watts, a reduction of 54% for a performance hit on multicore operations of around 20%, and zero impact on single core functions.

Now it’s whisper quiet, sips power, and won’t break the bank to run it. The power configuration is saved as a profile, so you can instantly flip back to 142 watts anytime you need full power – unlikely though, since there are very few programs that actually make use of multicore processors out there.

The Ryzen 9 5950X is an astonishing processor that delivers excellent multi-threaded performance at the consumer level. You have a basic high end desktop (HEDT) without the accompanying high end price.

It’s an expensive CPU, but in the context of its performance it’s a bargain. There are plenty of other reviews out there that attest to this. The main issue I would like to highlight are the thermals.

I upgraded from a first generation Ryzen 7 1700 which used an AIO 240 water cooled setup. This was fine for the 1700 but it cannot cope with the 5950X when it is running with all its cores. The temperature rapidly rises to 90 deg C and then thermal throttling kicks in to declock the processor cores and reduce the temperature.

I’m very impressed because I had run into heat issues with the 1700 at one time (I think there was a bubble in the water loop) and that CPU would just shut down rather than declock. I’m not at all disappointed.

I had purchased with an open mind knowing that an upgrade to the CPU cooling might be necessary — but not before I installed it to see whether it really was needed or not. This review is to let others know that if you want the best, you’ve got to be prepared to support it with some quality cooling.

Do yourself a favor and skip this broken, buggy, power hungry generation from intel. Most Heatsinks/watercoolers dont support LGA1700 yet, DDR5/PCIe5. 0 are useless right now because they are too young to offer any performance advantages, and the temperature issues are inexcusable.

I wanted to love this CPU. I bought it, and will use it, but I had to spend $150 extra dollars, void my warranty, and risk destroying my CPU just to use this thing at temperatures I am comfortable with.

The issues intel has with their socket bending the IHS and terrible die soldering are inexcusable. This may not be an issue on lower SKU products, but the flagship suffers the most from these design flaws which is pathetic because you pay a hefty price premium for it.

Im sorry, but I should not have had to cut the lid off my cpu, and add washers to my motherboard socket in order to keep my core temps below 100C at stock frequencies so that it doesnt thermal throttle.

Overall I am happy with how things turned out, but this level of oversight from intel is honestly what is pushing people to AMD. Im an intel fanboy and although I refuse to buy AMD products because of their terrible chipsets and buggy drivers Im still quite mad.

Nothing is more depressing than buying a top tier product and having your excitement killed and hopes/dreams to overclock shattered by 100C temps and thermal throttling on your watercooler CPU running stock clocks.

My primary use case for the 12900k is gaming and encoding video. Personally I could justify the higher price tag over the competing i5 and i7 because of my specific use case. Good Things: The processor is absolutely and insanely powerful.

I am encoding 1080, 30fps video roughly 50% to 80% faster give or take than my previous processor which was a 11700kf! One single generation and an i9 upgrade has saved me astronomical amounts of time.

As far as gaming goes… I would say is more heavily reliant on a graphics card so I won’t go into much detail on that. Overall this processor is wonderful and deserves its 5 stars. Not so good things: I didn’t take a star off for this because it isn’t really a problem rather just the way the processor is designed.

It uses a metric ton of power, I’m talking 241 watts during my normal video encoding sessions. Which in turn generates a space heater worth of heat. One of those things “great power comes great responsibility”.

I am telling you this because you NEED TO HAVE AN INCREDIBLE COOLER. I am currently using a Noctua NH-D15 and it’s okay. I would recommend it to anyone that prefers air cooling but nothing less. If you choose a cooler that is less you will regret it.

I would venture to say you need the cooler I have mentioned or 280mm and above AIO to even keep it from thermal throttling at heavy load. Do not underestimates this, gaming it is much more tame, still running high temperatures but better.

I still would get a really great CPU Cooler or otherwise you WILL be thermal throttling like crazy. Overall this is a great CPU and although not worth it for some, can be a great processor if it is worth it.

Just beware of the watts and heat. I was dumbfounded.

Purchased this CPU to finally upgrade my tired 8086k that I have had for close to 4 years now, and considering I also own a 3090 I was lucky enough to get last year, it was time. Paired with said gpu and a MSI Tomahawk Z690 with a Noctua NH-D15 Chromax Black cooler, this cpu runs complete marathons around my old 8086k.

Certain games that would fully saturate my 8086k while also getting notifications from something like Discord would introduce very bad stutter, however those are completely eliminated with the 12900k.

Temps are high when Im doing full resolution photo renders from my DJI Air 2S or Sony a6400 or straight up benchmarking, but that is expected and I’m not one to sweat about 80-90c temps, but if you are I would recommend the 12700k/5900x as they both run cooler and draw less wattage.

However in gaming with multiple different Firefox tabs and discord/telegram open, it never even touches 70c, so your experience may vary depending on what type of work load you are doing. Make sure that if you do have a high powered gpu that you also have a high output power supply with a high efficiency rating as well, as my system can suck north of 600-750w full tilt (my power supply being a 1200w platinum EVGA that doesnt break a sweat under full load).

I waited seven years to upgrade my PC because my Skylake CPU was not a limiting factor in a lot of games for a long time. However, my computer had DDR3 memory and fast DDR4 / DDR5 memory eclipses the performance of my old DDR3 computer.

Relative to the 12th generation Intel processor, the Core i9 is a bit of a splurge and it is annoying having to find a CPU fan that is compatible with the LGA1700 (extra wide). Due to the supply shortages, it can be hard to find a CPU fan that comes with the appropriate bracket, so be sure to check for compatibility (if it’s not included in the box, most manufacturers appear willing to freely send the bracket to you).

Similarly, it can also be very hard to get DDR5 memory due to the supply constraints across the industry. Ignoring the pain of the supply chain issues, the 12th generation Intel processors bring along compatibility with PCIe 5 (pretty much unused) and DDR5.

I originally bought a DDR5 motherboard, but I ended up returning it and going with a DDR4 motherboard (DDR4 and DDR5 are not compatible, but these CPUs support both) because I could not find DDR5 memory available at a reasonable price.

I am very happy with my decision because it performs great and DDR4 memory is widely available.

From ’06-’19 I had only built three PCs, including this one. It went as such: X6800–> 4790K –> 9900K I thought the jump to the 4790K would have been the biggest difference. Ya no. The move to the 9900K from the 4790K was absolutely insane.

Stock clocks this is a very powerful chip and would serve you well staying that way. Though many, including myself, will OC. It’s only natural I’d muse that the 9900K was the best of the 14nm line, including the KF/S.

There was/is no need (if you’re in the market on this socket set) to go for the others unless you want the brownie points on rarity. The chips that came later in the life-cycle seemed to have been binned well.

Discrete GPU and an OC on the K series is, for all intents and purposes, the same as the final two iterations. I held back on an OC until I purchased a case that could support a 240mm water solution, I had initially been running stock clock on a 90 to get by.

I have been on the 240mm cooling for just over a year, all core 5ghz at it sings. It runs warm as mentioned above but it doesn’t hit the thermal ceiling. **Make sure you cool these things properly, OC or not** It would remiss of me if I didn’t point out that I think there was a good amount of binning and silicon lottery going on.

I think I got very lucky with this one. I know many that have had stability issues running stock and even modest OC, let alone 5ghz and above. As stated above, this chip stock is amazing and will serve anyone well when it uses Turbo.

If you want some more out of it, a stable OC nearing 5ghz has been a sweet spot for me. Everything that I have thrown at it as been no problem. I would recommend this chip to anyone who is on this socket that wants to step up to the best of the generation.

In a desktop computer age dominated by AMD Ryzen processors, I have to admit I was a bit skeptical about buying an Intel processor for my first gaming machine. However, in the pursuit of saving money, I did so over its price competitor, the Ryzen 7 3700x, another 8-core 16-thread CPU, and I haven’t ever looked back.

An excellent CPU that runs smoothly and efficiently, doing exactly as advertised by making my multitasking, gaming, video editing, or day to day use just that much better. I’m not a huge overclocking guy, but I was able to get a 4.

6 all-core boost with my meager 120MM AIO. Without overclocks, the CPU runs at reasonable sub-45 C temps, and even under heavy load stays well under 80 degrees. To give some context, I am a prebuilt computer builder/ PC repairman who likes to stream, game, and produce content on the side.

Overall, the product has remained a gem even after 2+ years of newer CPU launches and I heavily recommend this for anyone who is looking to save money over the marginal-to-moderate performance gains in multi-threaded tasking that the Ryzen line of processors provide, while still packing a behemoth punch for all of today’s triple-A titles (assuming, of course, you’re packing hefty graphics down below).

P. S. Oh boy, does this thing game.

I’ve been using this CPU in a machine designed for video editing for about 10 months now, and it’s performed admirably. I’ve since moved all of my work-related applications to that machine. It’s scary fast for code compiling and package building.

It also handles video rendering and transcoding quite competently when using software that utilizes Intel graphics, like most Magix products. I have an HDMI dummy plug in there to fool Windows into making the Intel graphics accessible to those programs despite the system also having a discrete NVidia GPU.

I haven’t overclocked it because I’m more concerned with stability than the clock speed when doing sustained rendering or transcoding. If I’m doing it overnight, I just want to make sure it’s done by morning with no errors.

So I can’t speak on its overclocked performance. I also can’t speak on gaming because I’m not a gamer. I spend enough time staring at screens at work.

The installation of this processor is pretty easy to understand like most AMD processors have been in past itterations, line up the slotted corner, the only complaint I would have is the bracket the AM4 platform uses just having a loose bracket even after appropriately installing a cooler is strange although the manual says this should be the case I dont like anything loose when building hardware.

But that’s really just nitpicking. The OS installed beautifully off of a usb flash drive, although I had to re-install wine after initial setup. The hardware was instantly recognized which is nice having an RTX 3060ti I was hesitant it would not recognize the card.

The instant display of 65 gb of ram, all 24 core’s running and their respective loads, the sabrent rocket m. 2’s, as well as the massive cache (not as big as the 5,00 series but good enough for a busy day of gaming).

This beast of a build just handles whatever I have thrown at it so far. I have really only run it in a few games over a few weeks but Neverwinter, Civ’s 5 + 6, Minetest, Dota 2, Boderlands 2 won’t even stress any of the hardware at max settings.

I will have to run VM’s and harder games like hunt: showdown , or wait for cyberpunk to fix the bulldozer software scan thats been slowing down there software, I personally prefer to break the hardware in slower before really putting a hard stress test, although I did bench Civ and placed top 99% for AI calculations and game simulation on max settings.

So what’s the take away from all this? It’s an easy chip to build from, has run linux mint ulyanna 64 bit stable and easily, wine runs fine (after a reinstall), play on steam and play on linux both work fine off the processor, Personally I would watercool the processor, although the wraith cooler seems fine if you are on a budget but if your on a budget chances are you are not looking at these 12 – 16 core processors so I say spend the 100$ and keep it cooler longer (remember heat kills electronics).

When I bought this processor with tax it ran me 450$, that price after I bought it jumped by almost 100$ if that tells you anything you need to know about how good the Ryzen series really is versus intel.

My first personal experience building a computer was off the AM3+ platform and boy what a long way they have come. Cost to performance AMD still paves the way as Intel has become an after thought. I can do it all with this much power, and I can do it affordably.

From graphics rendering to hard gaming I see this platform being used from colleges to hollywood. Unless you get a processor that DOA you will not be disappointed, AMD brought the heat with the 5,000 processors, but if you want to get it done and for a way better price than the 5,000 series can be found at currently or even at all, then get the 3900x it can be found today and at a real price point not some over inflated out of stock price currently had by the 5000 series.

Okay this isn’t the top of the range chip but given the price point the performance is amazing. I think bang for buck it is one of the best chips out there at the moment. I’ve been doing video editing and complex 3D rendering in Blender including high poly models with many modifiers that go through CPU rather than GPU as default and it hasn’t skipped a beat.

For my day to day tasks, bearing in mind I deal with some seriously large data analysis (I. e. 1 million+ lines per tab, hundreds of formulas, 20+ tabs etc all in a local data model meaning the Excel file is over 100mb in size) my previous 8 core i7 @ 3.

6mhz seems like an ancient technology in comparison and there is a noticeable uplift in performance. I’ve been tinkering with virtual machines and have been running two virtual machines on top of my current setup (so effectively 3 machines at once) and again there’s been virtually no performance lag on day to day tasks on the main machine if the virtual machines are limited to 1 or 2 cores each.

So ita versatility for software developers is fantastic. It does kick out a lot of heat though under these sustained loads and the Wraith Prism fan just about copes with it when it isn’t overclocked and I think I have been subjected to some thermal throttling as a result.

For 80% of users I think the Wraith Prism would be more than adequate. But for power users, or those thinking of over clocking, that are going to run as sustained loads the Wraith Prism isn’t the quietest and a suitable upgrade for cooling should be looked into.

Great that, given the right motherboard, the CPU supports the upcoming windows 11 TPM requirements so it’ll stand the test of time too.

This was purchased as an upgrade from a 2700X. Compile times on a large project dropped considerably vs my old CPU, but then I also upgraded from 16GB to 64GB which helped compile more modules in parallel on different threads.

Recording video in OBS studio seems to have improved as well. I record output from multiple programs and combine it into a single video, and it seems to feel smoother. Yeah, you might get a higher frame rate with a 5900X on a top end graphics card running 1080p, but as the graphics card goes down in speed and/or up in resolution this becomes less of an issue.

The 5900X is also more expensive. You’ll have to decide what’s best for you, but my graphics card will probably be the bottle neck for the near future. Overclocking/undervolting software has it benchmarking faster than a 3900XT, so die qualities have probably improved since the release of these CPUs, but it depends on how well you do in the silicon lottery.

Overall a great purchase, and Micro Center had it at a great price.

I would HIGHLY recommend that people wait for places such as Newegg to have this CPU available. Even though the listed price went up to $399, at least when I bought mine, they offered $20 off for using the mobile app – so I paid basically ~$10 to $15 over MSRP, which I was willing to do as I had amassed a decent savings just for this VERY occasion, I had already ordered my ASRock Z370 Fatal1ty Gaming K6 before I even knew WHEN I would be able to buy this CPU, as again, Newegg had an AMAZING price on it, at just $170 – for ALL of the performance of the Fatal1ty Professional Gaming i7, or Maximus X Hero, just without built in WiFi, and 1 less M.

2 slot – that is literally it! I also already ordered my RAM, 2x 8 GB of G. Skill Ripjaws V DDR4-3200 16-16-16-36, my Noctua NH-D15, and a 250 GB Samsung 960 EVO M. 2 for boot all BEFORE I knew when I would be able to use ANY of it! Because I KNOW prices on things such as the motherboards and RAM – probably even NVMe SSDs, will all go up by the time ALL of Coffee Lake is available to everyone at all times.

And speaking of my motherboard, I also cannot recommend my ASRock Fatal1ty Gaming K6 enough! As stated above, I was able to hit 4. 8 GHZ locked on all 6 cores, using AUTO Vcore! I am only using Automatic for now, while people are still learning all the little tips and tricks to the Z370 Platform and Coffee Lake CPU Overclocking.

Seeing as under Prime95, both max heat and Blend for prolonged periods still has never gotten any single core above 88 C with this automatic Vcore, I am PRETTY confident that once I really TRY, and learn all the ins and outs of manual Vcore, and Coffee Lake Overclocking on my Motherboard, as I had done with my 2600k + ASRock Z77 Extreme4, I am ALMOST certain that I will be able to hit 5 GHZ on all cores, comfortably using just my Noctua NH-D15 and highly ventilated case! It is therefore, I suppose, my OPINION that SOME people are REALLY overselling the “Heat Problem” this CPU has, and the supposed NEED to delid to hit ~5+ GHZ on all cores at all times.

In my experience so far, this CPU runs VERY COOL, cooler than my 2600k did at 4. 5 GHZ as well – and that CPU was soldered! Your mileage may vary of course, silicon lottery and all. But I think that 4.

8 GHZ should not be a problem for anyone with halfway decent CPU cooling! Also, ASRock is perhaps the best Mobo company in the game. They care more about functionality than gimmicks and “looking perfect and pretty” As I have stated above, my $170 Fatal1ty Gaming K6 is FUNCTIONALLY identical to the ~$250 Fatal1ty Professional Gaming i7, the VRM components, the board design, the BASE features (how everything functions, as well as I/O ignoring small differences like an extra M.

2 slot) – everything that MATTERS FOR PERFORMANCE – is literally IDENTICAL! Whereas Asus has WIDELY varying performance based on the model you buy, making only the Maximus X, and one of the 3 or 4 STRIX boards a SAFE bet to perform well.

If you read motherboard reviews that go in depth, and even do performance comparisons, you will find ASRock to always be near or at the top of the pack, with the Fatal1ty Gaming K6 and Professional Gaming i7 performing identically – often matching or exceeding the Maximus X Hero, with nonsense such as MSI Godlike Gaming (WHAT A LOAD! $500 Mobo, for a CPU that will not cost more than $380!) – often middling the pack!.

While the 9900k has surpassed the 8700k as the best overall CPU for gaming (I still want that one), this CPU is no slouch. Most can hit 5Ghz with enough cooling. You can even go my route and either delid the CPU yourself, or do what I did and have Silicon Lottery delid it, which has allowed me to get up to 5.

1Ghz at 1. 41 volts (and temps in the low 70’s celsius with fans never hitting 50%). I have dialed it back down to that previously mentioned 5Ghz since it uses drastically less voltage, which has brought temps down even more with my custom loop cooling solution.

This was originally cooled with an EVGA CLC 280, which idled at around 32-35C and load temps of around 70-75C (albeit with insanely loud fan speeds), so AIO cooling can be sufficient to tame the heat this CPU can potentially output.

Paired with an ASUS Z390 Maximus XI Code and 1080ti, this CPU has given me the kind of gaming experience I used to dream of back when I was using a budget laptop to play Minecraft. Most games at 3440×1440 just blow past the 60FPS mark and often approach 100 or more depending on how high I have things cranked up, which makes for a great experience.

Stability has not been an issue at 5Ghz and as mentioned earlier, this particular chip delided is capable of 5. 1, but it wasn’t worth the massive increase in voltage to me. If you’re intent on sticking with Intel, but don’t want to fork over the money for a 9900k or 9700k, the 8700k still performs very well in both gaming and CPU-based tasks, particularly since you can utilize the iGPU in Adobe.

I also appreciate Intel allowing you to drop this in a Z390 board if on the odd chance you can upgrade to the 9900k, you won’t run into any issues. Backwards compatibility is a nice thing to have. If gaming is your thing and you can afford this, the 8700k is still a great chip.

Get an M. 2 2280 near or above 3000Mbs + of write speed. Even a conventional SSD will be a bottleneck. I upgraded from a Samsung EVO and I feel the difference. My past experience with my first ASRock MB was that getting just one core to 5GHz was very difficult (due to stability and/or thermal throttling on those last two cores).

This could have partly been the motherboard to blame. I updated the firmware and disabled thermal throttling in UEFI and the issue went away, but a nearly 30*C temp difference between core 4-and- cores 5/6 was bad.

This really shows that this was an Intel afterthought just to combat Ryzen and make people forget that there had been 3-generations without any substantive IPC improvement, and no significant generational leap in IPC since Sandy-bridge.

Most games and programs don’t seem to care about cores as much as single-thread performance, but I am enjoying the benefits of multi-tasking. I am hoping that Ryzen and Coffee Lake finally shifts the paradigm and that future DX12/ Vulcan titles are able to really leverage all the cores.

My hope was that the present upgrade over Sandy Bridge justified the purchase, and the extra cores would make it “future-proof”. My initial conclusion, 2-years ago when I bought this, was that, on the merits of gaming and 99% of normal use, unless you have money to burn in a pile, if you have an old Sandy Bridge/ Ivy Bridge i7″K” lying around.

The time to upgrade was NOT YET. HOWEVER (UPDATE) Looking back, I have 180*degrees changed my opinion. This CPU costs about $360. 00 and my old Sandy Bridge had been $270. 00 when new. This CPU is good enough to do 4K HTC Vive Pro VR while multi-tasking if you wanted.

My old argument was based on how little different the new CPU was from the “good-enough” 1080p experience of my old i7-2600K, but in hindsight, the difference between them is night and day. I have started playing with 3D-modeling and rendering, and have VR now, etc.

There is just so much more I can do with this that would have been cumbersome or impossible with my older 2nd-gen. Looking at this I see now that this is positioned at a price-point where it gives much better value than a 9700K, or a 9900K, and is better for gaming than a Ryzen.

If you are looking to upgrade from anything older than a 7700K, I’d say that this is worth the money. Thanks to Ryzen’s competition, Intel has given us the new Intel version of the “Mor Corez” paradigm shift, and for me there is no going back.

2 years later, I love this CPU more than ever before. It seems like I am on a journey to discover its potential, and it just keeps getting better.

This chip was a good chip then, and it still is a very acceptable chip. I can go on forever about the performance you get from this thing. I bought this about ~1. 5 years ago and it has NEVER failed me (every time it did fail, it was pretty much my fault.

) I was very satisfied about my purchase then. This chip is not as valuable now as it was then, but if you are a type of person that does want a computer that just runs pretty much everything, this is probably enough for your needs.

8 threads and 8 cores are PLENTY enough for most modern processes. The clock speed is enough to get a lot of modern chips a run for its money. With this, you should be able to get any modern video card (probably up to the 3070 or 3070 TI) and not have to worry about GPU bottlenecks (Don’t quote me on that, it’s just a guess).

Am I saying to buy this chip now? In my opinion, no. Do I recommend this chip now? No. I would absolutely recommend a 12th gen processor (“budget” pc gamers should go for the i5 12600k. Very good price to performance) paired with a 600 series D4 (DDR4) board (or depending on when you are looking at this, go for DDR5).

This option is way cheaper and significantly faster. The i7 9700k is a VERY capable chip and shouldn’t be looked down upon as a terrible chip. It’s more of the fact that it was released at a less than convienent time.

Final conclusion? If you have a system already with this chip (i7 9700k or i7 8700k), you should not have to upgrade to AMD or Alder Lake for a pretty long time, probably not until 14th or 15th gen Intel.

If you are building, considering building, or buying a new rig, go for an Alder Lake processor. It is very clear Alder Lake is significantly more capable (and cheaper at 250 dollars compared to the 300-400 dollars for this).

You should stay clear of this chip in this case.

Bought this for building my first PC. Compared to the i9-9900K this is the obvious choice. Yes, in 9900K has hyperthreading, but I’ve watched through countless benchmark tests, and there is simply not enough of a performance jump to justify the extra cost (in fact, the 9700K is actually better some games).

One word of warning though, if purchasing this CPU, make sure to get a pretty high end air cooler, or better yet, a AIO liquid cooler (I’m using an NZXT Kraken x62, could also use the Corsair AIO). Inititally I bought a budget cooler and the 9700K simply gets way too hot for it to handle.

Also recommend pairing it with a higher end z390 motherboard, as this will likely improve the performance over the entry level z390’s, which will struggle to keep cool with this cpu. With good cooling, this CPU is comfortably the best CPU for gaming currently, even though it lacks the hyperthreading of the 9900k, it is cheaper, has almost identical performance and is probably a little cooler thanks to the lack of hyperthreading.

Can also OC this CPU if desired and your cooling is capable of handling it.

This processor is a fantastic deal for the price. Intel CPUs and “value” have not exactly been words you see together, but since Intel is leaving the LGA1151 socket behind we get the benefit of some amazing deals on “last-gen” hardware.

But forget the fact this is a “last gen” chip – it’s still a workhorse. Even in a CPU-killing game like Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 the 9700K shines. Performance on this chip, even without overclocking, is comparable to a much more expensive chip on a “current gen” platform for a fraction of the price.

And if you’re into overclocking, this chip can easily be pushed into even higher performance levels. Most games are limited by the GPU rather than the CPU, and with 8 high-speed cores the 9700K is still going to provide long-term value.

You need to provide your own cooler, but even a $40 cooler is more than enough to outperform most stock CPU coolers and provide thermal headroom for overclocking. And you’re still coming in at a price that is much, much less than CPUs with lesser or only marginally better performance.

The 9700K is not the sexiest chip on the marketplace, but it currently the best value you are going to find. At Microcenter’s current insanely good pricing this is a value you should snap up before they are gone.

I absolutely don’t recommend this product, unless you can find a good price on a used one. I also wouldn’t recommend the related i9-9900k or i9-9900kf unless you’re building a pure gaming machine and have too much money.

The i7-9700k offers similar or even superior performance for cheaper. If you want to do literally anything else other than gaming and web browsing, go with a Ryzen. Intel still has a minute advantage for gaming (the difference between fps from an i9 and a Ryzen 9 is within 1%).

For everything else, Ryzen’s smaller transistors, higher core count, lower price, and better price to performance ration completely crush Intel’s offerings. As an extremely specialized piece of hardware, this chip is admirable.

Within the larger perspective of the rest of the market, it just isn’t very competitive.

Swapped out the i9-9900k running in my system after updating the BIOS on my AORUS Master Z390 board to their F10 BIOS for i9-9900KS compatibility. For the first day it was great, played my games most of the day.

Then, the next day I was playing a game + web browsing and I got a blue screen. The system then restarted, 2mins later another blue screen. Continuous blue screens until I could no longer boot the system.

Swapped out i9-9900ks CPU for the previous one and had no issues at all. Re-swapped in the i9-9900ks and it never booted up. Instant failure. Needless to say I had to RMA the CPU chip.

HP’s OMEN 40L Desktop brings you top level performance all in a stunning mid-tower case which is perfect for all of your gaming needs. While there are some options of customization, the pre-built options seem to be fairly well balanced which means you’ll get a good overall value.

My OMEN arrived well packaged with just the right amount of support to ensure that it would survive the delivery. The interior cardboard support did a surprisingly good job of keeping the PC nice and snug.

After removing the PC from the box, I verified the internal hardware to ensure no cables came loose upon transport which passed in my book. The first thing I noticed was just how beautiful this case is and how thoughtfully it was engineered.

It features a glass side panel (which is fairly common) to display the internal components, and plenty of ventilation both along the front panel and the top of the case. It also was designed with easy access to internal components (toolless access) on the front glass, left glass, and right rear panel.

Other things that made quite an impression on me, the GPU bracket is no joke with this case; while it’s made of plastic, its large enough to accommodate even the largest GPUs on the market. It provides excellent stability for the RTX 3070, only peculiar thing is that it uses a proprietary adapter to connect to the 2x 6+2 pin power supply cables which isn’t a big deal.

The OMEN’s CPU AIO (all-in-one cooler) looks amazing as it looks bold against the contrast of the black case. I was also happy with other components utilized in the build, such as the HyperX 2×8 GB DDR 4 (heat sinks and setup with dual channel to provide optimal performance), a terabyte NVMe M.

2 Western Digital SDD for storage, and of course AMD Ryzen 7 5800x processor (not visible, however verified with cpu-z). Other notable components are the Cooler Master Power Supply along with Cooler Master fans, all excellent choice components which allows this PC to run flawlessly.

The default package does come preinstalled with Windows 11 Home (Professional would be a better), but works either way. Where, I found myself a bit disappointed was with the front panel IO. It’s great that it comes with 4 USB ports, but it did not have any USB-C ports which is fairly common with PCs at this level.

Additionally, while the OMEN AIO cooler looks fantastic, it tends to be louder than I would expect, especially when not underload, however it does a decent job of keeping the CPU cool when it is underload.

Gaming on the OMEN 40L has been fantastic, this PC is well optimized and it performs very well for its cost/value. I ran a quick synthetic benchmark test with UserBenchMark – and HP built a great PC: results indicating performance overall is 81st percental, meaning out of 100 PC’s built similarly, only 19 PC’s out performed this particular model.

I’m able game with this PC paired with a 34inch wide monitor (3440 x 1440 resolution) and still achieve an average frame rate of 165 – 280 FPS depending on the title. Performance would likely improve if just gaming at 1080P and I’m sure lower gaming in 4k, but stable and consistent.

This rig is perfect for gaming, and while it may not be using the very latest (most high-end components), it’s an excellent value as it performs well and the design of this PC affords you the ability to easily make upgrades in the future.

If you’re looking for a great gaming no fuss PC, then this would make a great addition or upgrade!.

I firstly want to state that this machine is really quite good overall. Aesthetics are quite nice, most components are up to “gamer” standards, and you really won’t be going wrong with this machine as a pre-built.

I’m impressed with the name brand RAM, installed in a dual-channel configuration which is important for a Ryzen processor. The 120mm AIO water cooler looks nice and performs reasonably well. The machine maintains good thermals and stays quiet while gaming.

One issue I had after receiving this machine was that the CPU got seemingly stuck at 0. 5GHz. Upgrading/reinstalling the BIOS fixed this issue. The BIOS definitely leaves a lot to be desired. Very few settings are configurable here, but some are exposed through the Omen software and Ryzen master.

The motherboard appears to be HP specific and there have only been a few BIOS updates. I worry that this machine will miss out on Ryzen firmware upgrades that fix instability/performance issues in the future.

I would prefer having a USB-C or two on the front panel instead of four USB-A ports (2 USB 3. 1 and 2 USB 2). The design of where the USB ports are makes installing and removing some devices difficult.

McAfee being pre-installed is annoying. The other software is HP related. The Omen software is alright and even enables pushing the RAM with an XMP profile. The included mouse and keyboard are awful.

In my opinion, if you are already spending on a machine you should also spend for a good mouse and keyboard and not rely on cheap included peripherals. I appreciate that this machine provides easy upgradeability with push buttons to pop off the side panels.

There is room for 2. 5″ drives behind the motherboard tray and the RTX 3070 can be easily swapped out for a new GPU in the future. The motherboard has one empty PCI express 8x slot that can be used for a faster NIC, USB controller, or other PCIe device in the future.

Really enjoying this machine so far. It performs great and should be useable/upgradeable long into the future.

I’ve been using this all AMD build for a couple of weeks and so far am very pleased. (6600 Ryzen, 5800x CPU). I recommend, I don’t think most will be displeased. Note: I haven’t overclocked it or run HyperX on the RAM.

No need and I’m not into stressing the build for a few FPS when I’m getting good enough FPS. Glad I didn’t go with water cooler, this fan is doing fine and isn’t loud. Interesting design with what appears to be wrapped heatpipes running to the exterior fan housing or some such thing.

Pros: – Quiet so far in every test. – Good performance, Passmark score of 93%. That is performs as well or better than 93% of computers currently on the market. Good enough for me. Much better than my previous Pavilion entry gaming rig with the 2400g and R580 graphics.

(Its test hit around the 50% mark. ) – Handles my Two 2k 165mhz monitors with ease. -Stress test Red Dead Redemption 2 – Mixed high and ultra barely works the fan, with radeon chill capped at 85fps (no need to cook the thing) and only using 3200 ram speed (no hyperx, again no need to cook it) I’m getting reasonable temps in the 60s to low 70s and up to 85 frames.

Very little more challenging than RDR2. – Fairly easy to setup, no problems or discouraging incidents. – Clean build, looks nice, lots of cooling features. Really seems well constructed and solid. I like the look.

I could do without the glass and blinky lights but nobody does that anymore. 🙁 If you want that, lots of pretty tunable lighting. Cons: – A few adds from McAffee and related that are annoying. I’ll tune them out.

– Big and heavy for a micro sized MB with little expansion , may help the cooling I suppose. – Windows 11 – just the pain of figuring out where everything is again in the new Windows, but so far I think I’ll like the OS in the end.

– Cheapest of cheap Keyboard and mouse. CMon HP, I know most will buy their own Corsair or Steelseries rig, but you could at least try to provide a decent initial setup for a $2k (with tax) purchase.

Doesn’t have to be tops, but scaling res mouse and some moderatly useful keys would be a reasonable nod, makes for a useful backup. At least your cheap end stuff isn’t annoyingly bad. Same stuff I got with one of your mini computers though.

– For this CPU a Ryzen 6700 option would be nice to pull up the ray tracing potential. 6600 is great frankly if you don’t do 4k or try to ultra everything out, but for a 2k presentation and the rest of the power curve, a 6700 or higther would have made more sense with this CPU.

I couldn’t build this config with that card on the site although all the pieces were floating around in various mixed rigs. For a 1920×1080 setup more than enough power for anything and everything but RT in my estimation.

Don’t expect RT, lowest RT support on market per reviews, but possible. Glad I didn’t want/need RT. – Packaging – really surprised and disappointed that the interior wasn’t protected with an inflatable travel cushion, a lot of the aftermarketers have learned to do that to protect the motherboard/connections from vibration damage.

HP could up this, but mine came in solid, well built, I didn’t detect any damage. The bracket on the viideo card may be seen as sufficient for this, it just seems that the inflatable padding is a sensible protection.

Comments: The CPU performs really well in Passmark. Wish the GPU were one series higher but I’m happy with its performance with my 2k monitors. GPU kills 2D stuff, knocks it out of the park but only hits about 83% or so on the 3D.

Your mileage might vary. It isn’t overheating and I’m driving them more than satisfactorily – that was my biggest worry coming in. CPU runs hotter than I want to see, but according to what I read it is by design by AMD.

Idle (varies by your use/setup) is running high 50’s C to Mid 60’s. GPU is hangin out in the mid 30’s C. (90 degrees is expected on full throttle by AMD. ) Most 3D games I tested against it don’t drive the GPU much over 50 degrees, RDR2 being an exception.

RDR on full Ultra with MSAA turned on does bottom it out though, downt to 5 to 6 FPS! Easy fix is to not use MSAA and things pop back up to 30fps pretty quick with everything else maxed. My high/ultra mix is very good averaging about 60fps, and of course I’m throttling it a bit as I noted.

Curiously, the OMEN desktop temps on CPU vary quite a bit from the Ryzen Master temps. I’m not tryint to OC anything, just being mindful of state, performance and temperature. I’ve been around electronics enough to know cool means longer life.

One bit of advice – all the blinky lights and monitoring stuff you turn on generally means that your system is being polled and may not drop to its most restful and cool state when idle. I haven’t figured it out on this box what that will look like as I turn stuff off, but it made a 5 degree difference to kill Corsair’s ICUE software and just go with default lights on my Pavilion.

Heat kills electronics over time, so for reliability, save the blinky lights for special occasions. Happy with the purchase, pretty good if moderately overpriced rig, but I think the quality was worth it, and when the video card market settles down I suspect price will drop a little.

Not a bad price considering in current GPU market and from what I could tell from my ressearch a far more solid build than the custom gaming shops in general. I’d give it 4. 5 if I could but 5 works as the annoyances are trivial and not subverting my goals and 4 isn’t fair, i’m really happy with it.

So far the best HP build I’ve encountered and I’m full on recommending. CPU is a beast.

I would have loved to review this computer however, Willis in the sales department refused to sell it to me. I have purchased 3 computers from you in the past. No. Issues. At. All. Tell Willis to pound sand for me.

I bought an extremely expensive PC (~$2500)from this company and within a month of purchase it began to crash, windows listing it the crashes “hardware errors. ” I tried googling it and wasn’t able to find any workable fixes besides reinstalling or replacing components – steps I was trying to avoid by buying a prebuilt PC.

My initial question was “how do I assess whether or not a component needs to get replaced and how can you support me in that?” I still haven’t gotten an answer to this question.
