I pare my Ryzen 1600 gaming machine with a Radeon RX 580 – budget mix gets me great gaming at 1080p; EVERY ONE of my 75 Steam games run at the highest settings. Performance is 50 min fps for the most demanding games and up to 260 fps on some.

Note: Ryzen seems to really take advantage of faster ram. My new system with this Ryzen 5 1600 at 3200 ddr4 sometimes seems snappier in games than my Ryzen 2700x system with its 2400 ddr4. Haven’t benched mark this perception yet.

Also note that almost all games are single core, and advantage for the 1600. FYI, not to give the wrong info – my 2700x system is always much faster in multicore like video editing etc. A mention abut Microcenter.

While the Ryzen 7 family brought AMD back to being competitive in the high-end CPU market with their hugely impressive multi-threaded performance and value compared to Intel’s X99 platform, most people won’t ever use 8 cores or 16 threads.

Enter the Ryzen 5 family made up of the 6 core and 12 thread 1600 and 1600X, and 4 core and 8 thread 1400 and 1500X. The 1600 is arguably the best value of all the Ryzen 5 CPUs, as of this writing it’s only $30 more than the 1500X and $30 less than the 1600X, plus adding extra value with the great Wraith Spire cooler that is missing from the 1600X.

At this point Intel might have a slight advantage in IPC with their Kaby Lake CPUs, but it’s very slight, and negated by Ryzen’s better multi-threaded performance and unlocked multiplier for overclocking on all Ryzen CPUs.

It’s hard not to be impressed by getting 50% more cores (4 vs 6) and 200% more threads (4 vs 12) compared to Kaby Lake i5 CPUs at a similar price. For my build I went with the R5 1600 and Asus Prime X370-Pro.

Micro Center’s $50 off combo deal, at the time of my purchase, made this an unbeatable value. You can save even more by going with a B350 motherboard, with the difference mostly being fewer USB 3. 1 ports/PCIe lanes and no multi GPU support (although I have heard it works but you get only x8+x4 lanes instead of x8+x8 lanes).

I went for the Asus because it was the cheapest X370 motherboard Micro Center carried at the time and I wanted the better VRM cooling for overclocking. Overall the system I built around the R5 1600 is a powerhouse.

Windows 10 installed in a couple minutes on my Samsung 960 Evo M. 2 PCIe NVMe SSD. I updated to the latest Asus 0604 BIOS and have had no issues at all with stability. My Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x16GB 2133MHz kit works flawlessly and overclocked nicely to 2666MHz on close to stock timing with 1.

275v. Waiting to get an aftermarket CPU cooler before overclocking the CPU but I have benched a little at 3. 8GHz. I had issues with crashing on the Asus Aura RGP software when opening it but resolved that by installing the 1.

3GB AMD chipset drivers. I love this system and the R5 1600 works very nicely in games with my EVGA GTX 1060 6GB SC. I have been a fan of AMD since the Athlon Thunderbird days and was so excited for Ryzen to bring AMD back into being competitive with Intel at the mid to high-end CPU market.

AMD delivered and then some with Ryzen. AMD says the AM4 platform will be supported through around 2020 and support future iterations of Zen. I highly recommend the R5 1600, especially if you don’t need the extra cores/threads of the R7 1700, 1700X, and 1800X.

While I absolutely love the value you get with the R7 1700 and its amazing power efficiency for an 8 core CPU, it just didn’t make sense to pay the extra $100 for me over the R5 1600. AMD is back on the map and finally making Intel sweat.

So I bought this chip in hopes of building my first pc. The chip arrived fairly fast for international shipping, about 2 or 3 weeks, but regardless, when I attempted to build the pc after other compatible parts arrived I could never actually get the build to post.

Countless hours were spent in attempt to get anything out of the chip but nothing occurred. I even sought professional help and they could not get the CPU to work. I did not believe that the CPU could have been faulty so I had thought both of my boards were damaged since there was never a proper bootup for 2 compatible motherboards.

Because of this I had to have 2 separate motherboards be replaced and then when both boards never even had LEDs turn on I decided to get a refund and buy a completely different compatible board from a reputable retail shop (micro) (CenTeR).

With the new board the pc turned on for maybe 5 seconds but never posted. Thankfully the third board that I was using had a EZ debut indicator so I could finally figure out what parts were bad and the only light that was on was the CPU light.

This then leads to several long trips back and forth to the Computer shop in an attempt to figure out why the CPU indicator light was on. The service technician expected the chip, did not notice any bends, and tried to use separate CPUs to start up the pc.

As soon as he put in a different 3400g CPU the pc booted up with no problem. Sadly they didn’t have the 3400g at reputable retail shop. The technician also used a Ryzen 5 3600 CPU, which they had in stock and the pc started up even faster.

At this point the tech said the chip was bad and that I should return it. And to think, the Ryzen 5 3600 chip from a retail shop was all I needed to get my build up and running. Now I am on here typing on the pc that was the build from hell.

Would definitely not do this again.

Delivery was fast and well packed. Installing went easy with no problems. Storage: Yes, having a Ryzen 3000 series or newer (if you read this much later than originally posted) is required to take advantage of the PCIe lanes that make your NVMe work up to 5000 MB/s (read) and 4400 MB/s (write).

Graphics: Comparing this £120 Ryzen 3400G to the £1200 RTX 2080 TI: Techpowerup ranks 10x of relative higher performance on the RTX 2080 TI (see image attached). Makes sense, as it’s 10x more expensive, except the Ryzen 3400G is a great CPU as far as I can tell.

I have an Asrock A300 mini system. while Asrock doesn’t officially support the Renoir series of processors on that board, they did release a firmware that did. until they unreleased it. Somebody has kept that available, and it works like a champ at letting that tiny desktop system utilize a bigger faster processor like this one.

In day to day operations like web browsing, I didn’t notice a whole lot of difference in feel from the 3200G that it replaced. both felt super snappy and responsive. But when you lay a heavy task like video encoding onto the 4600G you can definitely feel the extra cores and threads in there making faster work of it,.

Just replaced a Ryzen 3 2200G I purchased years ago at Microcenter with the new Ryzen 5 4600G. Much faster video and smoother gaming now. Where the 2200G would stutter in some game sections the 4600G is totally smooth, having 12 thread against only 4 makes a big difference!.

I bought this processor a few weeks ago for a cheap gaming build that I have worked on. So far after a few weeks, I can safely say that it is a pretty good processor for the price and with the onboard graphics, it is good while you wait for the prices of GPUs to go down a bit more before buying up a graphics card that will be good for some serious hardcore gaming.

-Last time I built a PC I went solidly mid-range on processor. Given that it’s about the most difficult component to replace, I went high-end this time. I wouldn’t say I regret getting this one, but I really would have been fine with a 12600 (i5) instead and could have saved $120.

I mainly do high-end gaming and photo processing, and I barely tax it at all (at least until I do the big batch exports). If you do more video work or numerical simulations it may be more worthwhile.

It’ll probably last me a few years longer than my last CPU did, but still not convinced it’ll be much difference at that point against the i5. -This CPU seems about the limit of what your average air cooling can handle.

With a single-fan CM Hyper 212 Evo 2, it gets to ~80° C ± 5° when running [email protected] full-throttle. It’ll work, even for hours at a time, but you may want to spring for an AIO, or at least a 2nd CPU fan if you’re running at 100% max turbo power all the time.

-Windows 10 has a few usability issues with the hybrid architecture. It seems any “below normal” or “low” priority processes get sent to the E-cores by the thread scheduler. Most of the time you won’t notice, but sometimes high-load tasks are assigned these lower priorities to keep things running smoothly, and in such cases they’ll get stuck using just the 4 logical processors on the E-cores and none of the 16 available P-core logical processors.

There are tools like Process Lasso to help automatically reassign processes to P-cores, but Windows 10 users will need to keep an eye on task manager to identify if high-load processes are getting stuck on E-cores.

This is more a knock against Microsoft than Intel though. Still feels like hybrid architecture is worth having so high-load stuff can go to P-cores and the system still has E-cores to manage essentials and avoid getting choked down.

-Fun fact: just the 4 E-cores on this seem faster than the entire CPU that I’m replacing (i5-3570).

I have this in a system with the Asrock steel legend z690 and a 3060ti. It is running far cry 6 at over 90 fps on all ultra settings 1440p. This is working perfectly so far on windows 11. (because Microsoft is in bed with intel, but whatever) As of right now, two days into usage and gaming, i have no complaints.

edit: one week in, still no issues, seems to run everything as normal, getting high fps in games and zero stuttering or lagging issues whatsoever. Great cpu so far. edit: a few weeks in, thought i would mention.

I have this strapped to a noctua NH-D15, one of the largest air coolers out there and competes with water coolers. This CPU will reach mid to sometimes high 60’s while playing games. Cinebench got this CPU to around 80-84 ish degrees but did not thermal throttle under stock settings.

I feel bad not overclocking this as it is a K series, but it is already so powerful. It scored 21000 tho lol. so, i would recommend a LARGE COOLER with GOOD AIRFLOW IN THE CASE. This is a hot one. ALSO it will consume far over the 150 watts.

Power draw with Cinebench had it at around 205 watts.

Overall, I would say if you got one with good silicone, then lucky you. I do not recommend this product and especially not if you want to overclock it. I dont think it would handle it very well, and would kill the processor in no time.

I have overclocked my 3600x and it seems fine, but now I am scared that it is going to go out on me too. I went against the grain, and all my friends called me crazy for going AMD and I just kept saying, watch and see, well now I am the one looking like an idiot because I have this ROG Strix board here but no processor for it, and used the computer for school.

Pretty messed up if I must say so. There are absolutely no bent pins, I always monitor thermals on my computers, so this is just a junky garbage processor,. I was thinking of getting one of the new 5600x processors too, but I do believe I’ll be going back to Intel, even if I have to buy a whole new board and processor, because I know AMD will not warranty this product.

It was bought on 6/3/2020 so its almoooost 5 months old, gee I have had disposable contacts last longer than that. Can’t afford to buy a new processor every five months. If AMD will allow a return for the same unit then I will change my overall review, but as of right now, 2 eggs and 2 eggs only, and thats mainly because I like newegg and the processor did get here fast, and was easy to install.

The rest of the experience with it was gargbage.

I purchased nearly everything for my first PC build the same day. Aside from my graphics card, which I already had prior to anything else, I purchased the AMD Ryzen 7 2700X 3. 7GHz 8 Core AM4 Boxed Processor with Wraith Prism Cooler, MSI B450 TOMAHAWK AMD AM4 ATX Motherboard, Crucial Ballistix Sport LT 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 PC4-25600 CL16 Dual Channel Desktop Memory Kit, NZXT H510 Tempered Glass ATX Mid-Tower Computer Case, and although it won’t let me add more than three to my product review, I also purchased an Inland Professional 960 GB 3D NAND SATA III 6Gb/s 2.

5″ Internal SSD and a Seagate BarraCuda 2TB 7200RPM SATA III 6Gb/s 3. 5″ Internal Hard Drive. Beginning with Ryzen 7 2700X, I’ve done plenty of researching on the internet on different CPUs and their performance, however, I found that this CPU would be perfect for my first gaming setup.

With not having much knowledge on how to assemble a PC, I found this CPU and heatsink fan to be extremely easy to install. The heatsink fan comes preinstalled with thermal paste, so there is no need to put thermal past on the CPU.

The fan is quiet and also has RGB lighting which looks pretty neat through the tempered glass on my case. Moving on to the motherboard, the MSI Tomahawk B450 was very simple with it’s instructions on how to install everything needed.

It has (2) USB 2. 0 ports, (3) USB 3. 1 ports and (1) USB-C port, an excellent amount with everything that I have plugged in. It comes with a pretty cool looking IO shield and has a nice back lighting on the top right of it as well.

Upon turning the PC on for the first time, it booted the OS from my flashdrive automatically. After installing my OS, I found it easy to get into the BIOS screen to change my RAM speed to 3200. Moving on to the RAM I purchased, the Crucial Ballistix Sport LT 8GB works great and is compatible with the Ryzen 2700x and the MSI B450 motherboard.

Not too much to it, I purchased 2 RAM sticks with higher speeds so the processor will perform better. Before moving on to the case, I would like to talk about the Inland SSD and the Seagate HDD. Both work perfectly fine, after doing some research online, a lot of reviewers recommended Samsung for SSDs, however, I’ve been using this Inland SSD for about a month now and it’s been working fine.

I don’t know if I would be able to tell the difference if I got a different brand. Everything that I have saved to it, loads up very quickly. I use the SSD to boot my OS, and store the games and documents that I would like to load up quickly, and the Seagate HDD to store games that I don’t mind taking a while to load, along with anything else.

Finally, the NZXT H510 mid tower case, it’s great for first timers like me. It has plenty of cable routing holes, which makes it easier for wire management (also comes with zip ties). It comes with a USB-C, USB 3.

0 and Audio Jack on the front. I’m not exactly sure if the audio jack is for a standard 3. 5mm, cause when I try to plug my head set in, it seems like a tight fit and no audio comes through, however, I like to use the USB port for my headset anyway so it doesn’t bother me.

I found it extremely convenient that the case comes with (2) 2. 5” drive bays, I didn’t want to leave my SSD randomly inside the case, but I was able to mount it in the slots. It also appears to fit (3) 3.

5” HDDs, that will be useful if I decide I need more storage. There is a divider panel that separates the motherboard from the power supply, which I find quite useful because there are a lot of extra cables attached to my power supply due to not purchasing a modular power supply.

After pre placing most of the needed cables through the cable routing holes, everything was pretty easy to plug into the motherboard, the only exception was the CPU power cord from the power supply. There is a cable routing hole in the top left corner of the case, however, the space between the corner of the case and the corner of the mother board, made it slightly difficult to plug in.

Overall, my first PC build was successful, and I am extremely satisfied with all the parts I’ve purchased. 10/10 would recommend everything that I have reviewed today.

Wanted a cheap system to encode H265 on the CPU versus using a GPU or QuickSync since the quality using the CPU for encoding is the best from my limited testing so far. Since this processor has been out a few years there are quite a few used ones for sale so prices are fairly reasonable, motherboards are also fairly plentiful new or used giving a good range of choices from basic to full featured.

Since it has been a few years since I last updated my systems I built 6 new ones ranging from Ryzen 7 2700x/B450, Ryzen 7/X470, Ryzen 5 3600X/B450, i5-9600K/Z370, i7-9700K/Z390 and i5-10600K/Z490 to see which was the best at encoding based on time and it was an interesting process with all 6 falling within a few minutes of each other encoding the same video.

The Ryzen 7 2700X is middle of the pact but due to its lower overall cost makes a decent system for encoding video IMO.

I’m going to be honest, I was not expecting huge gains coming from a Ryzen 5600x. And you are probably wondering, why would you upgrade twice in a single product cycle? Well the short answer is that the availability of the 5900x when it first came out was.

lacking to say the least so I had to make due with the 5600x. At the time, the six-core processor was more than capable to fit my needs. However over the past year, my work habits have changed and thus I demanded more from my workstation.

Adding a second monitor was a great addition to help increase my multi-tasking capabilities. However this made me aware of the limitations of having fewer cores in my system. So I decided to go for this beast of a cpu, doubling the number of cores in my system.

I kept my expectations in check of course, double the cores does not mean “doubling performance”. And to be quite frank, in terms of raw performance, it’s actually not that much quicker in running normal tasks.

that is, at least on paper. Of course, if you run programs that can utilize all the performance, then yes it will be significantly faster. But I do not run such programs for my workload, just a heavy multi-tasker.

To get to my point, this upgrade allowed me to experience something very different when it comes to “user experience”. It isn’t a massive jump in performance in gaming or running normal day to day applications.

But it is that buttery smooth experience that you cannot explain on paper, nor run any test programs to measure a noticeable gain. And I think far too many times, we come to compare stats on paper without considering the “user experience”.

Many reviews on this cpu come to the conclusion that it is not that much quicker in gaming when compared to its little brother, the 5600x. But I guarantee you, that 5600x will have the occasional micro-stutters, or it takes a few extra seconds to install a program.

Basically, my point is that most people will not need this level of performance and if you are strictly on a budget, a 5600x is your best bet. For example, imagine owning a normal, economic car vs. a high end luxury car.

Both will get you from point A to point B. I’d even go as far to say that they’ll probably get you there in similar times. In terms of transportation, they both will do the job. However, the luxury car will just do it in comfort, and it’s just nice to be in one isn’t it.

Similarly, the 5900x is that luxury bracket, the user experience is what you get with 12 cores :).

Went from a 2700x to this. For what I do with a PC the 2700x was sufficient but I did have an Asus Tuf x570 motherboard so I figured get one of the best chips offered for the board. Tasks do seem zippier, and Cyberpunk is smoother.

I did crash on Cyberpunk with the 2700x randomly, but have yet to have one happen with the 5900x. It doesn’t run as cool as the 2700x but surprisingly its not that much warmer. Only difference is chips in my setup, I am still using the same 3200 mhz memory.

I have a noctua chromax dh15 and phanteks p500a case. The 2700x would max out at 60 and idle 27-30 degrees celsius. Doing the same tests the next day in about the same ambient room temp the 5900x idles aaround 29-33 and has maxed at 67 degrees celsius.

While playing Cyberpunk it sits around 60. Most cores idle at 3600mhz, single core gets up to 4950, all load synthetic around 4500 and gaming they will hit all core 4750. That is with popping it in and no tweaks.

I figured to bite the bullet while I had gift cards and points. Even before the shortage nice cpus on the used market still sold for a decent price, so I went ahead and grabbed one before AMD stops this line and goes with the next gen.

So, I’m the type of person who always does a lot of research before buying any computer component. Although I would have liked to have been able to afford something better than this (the latest and greatest) – I was NOT able to afford the new AMD chip (3900/3950 series).

LOL. I’m not looking to purchase a CPU for over $500. Seeing as how I am used to Intel, I decided that this would be more than sufficient for not only the gameplay that I do, but also for rendering graphics as I am in web design as well.

A lot of people talk about hyperthreading, and don’t understand that NOT ALL SOFTWARE programs use hyper-threading. Some of the rendering I do doesn’t actually use hyper-threading. Believe it or not, the 8 cores in the 9700K are more than enough to do the rendering that I do for web-based work.

There are those that will tell you that hyper-threading is SO important. sure, for some. but I would probably not be wrong in saying that it includes people looking to play at ultra settings in FPS games and/or streamers who have 20 windows open in various software programs at a time – or using high rendering software like CAD programs.

For the rest of us, 9700K is plenty. If you want the proof, go research it yourself. Also, I’m not a huge FPS gamer (I’m into the more aRPG type games), so really, the 9700K is MORE THAN ENOUGH for what I’m doing game-wise.

So all-in-all, I’ve been VERY pleased with my purchase. Other specs in case you’re wondering about my setup – – Corsair H100i RGB Platinum 75 CFM Liquid CPU cooler – Asus ROG STRIX Z390-H Gaming ATX LGA1151 Motherboard – G Skill Trident Z RGB 32GB (2 x 16) DDR4-3600 Memory – M.

2 500GB Samsung SSD – VNand 500GB Samsung SSD – Corsair 650i Power Supply – Asus ROG Strix GTX1060 6GbOC GPU (soon to be upgraded to one of the RTX2000 Super series).

So, looking at the purely Intel side of the market for now, I think that this is the best bang-for-the buck that Intel is offering. The 8700k is a great chip, for sure, but I always prefer real, physical cores to hyper-threads.

But, that is just me, perhaps your particular workload will favor the 8700k. In reality, hyper-threading is a very good feature to have, but, it is only one of several very good features to have on a CPU, and I prefer the cores to the threads any day.

Looking at the entire market, including AMD, Ryzen 3rd gen has many compelling values through the price ranges. But, even in many productivity tasks, the 9700KF can keep up in many of them well, especially considering the overclocking headroom and clock-advantage that this chip can provide.

Don’t get me wrong, Ryzen 3rd gen is definitely worth a look, I am just attesting that this chip proves that AMD has not conquered the price-to-performance market yet. When paired with a high-end GPU, this chip provides excellent performance in gaming.

That being said, for gaming and simultaneous streaming and recording, the hyper-threads are missed. If you plan to do that with this chip, then, you will likely need additional equipment. When paired with, say, an RTX 2070 super, 2080, or a 5700XT, I don’t recommend even bothering to overclock this CPU, as you will only see rather minimal gains.

Predictions are dangerous things, but, I predict that even when paired with high-end GPUs, this chip will perform well for at least six years to come. My chip overclocked to 5. 2ghz on all cores. Though, it should be noted that was on a Noctua air cooler.

So, please, please make certain your cooling situation is in order before overclocking this chip. Even at the out-of-the-box settings, I recommend at least a 130w-rated cooler for optimal performance.

If you want to overclock, then, well, I suggest either a high-end air cooler or a 240mm all-in-one liquid cooler. See, while Intel’s Ringbus architecture used here is very low-latency, it does have a weakness: adding more cores and higher clocks increases power consumption and heat generation geometrically.

And that is a real problem on these 8-core chips. This is as opposed to AMD’s infinity fabric, in which power consumption and heat generation increase linearly with core counts and clock speeds. Add to this that the 9700K/F is on Intel’s 14nm process, and you can see how this is a problem with heat generation.

That though, is really this chip’s only weakness in my opinion. All things considered, this is an excellent, high-end CPU, at a very reasonable price. when it is available, that is.

Probably the best CPU I’ve owned so far, keeps up well with my 3080 and stays cool. I have it paired with a be quiet! Pure Rock 2 and it keeps it around 55 degrees during gaming and is almost silent.

My first 12th Gen experience and I’ve had no stability issues of any kind with it and my B660 board. Given the performance I can imagine almost any decent CPU cooler would work perfectly with it. It performs as well as my R7 5800X in gaming, while staying significantly cooler and being significantly quieter too, not to mention drawing a lot less power.

I always recommend the 400 and 500 Intel CPU’s, they perform almost as well as the 600K ones while being a lot cooler and using less power, so if you’re like me and not interested in overclocking, this is a great all round CPU.

I’ve got this one for my budget gaming setup and got surprised by its outstanding performance for the price. Paring with a Asus TUF GAMING LC 240 ARGB liquid cooling, the CPU is at 28C in idle and only 54C under 100% load when running Cinebench R23.

Performance wise, don’t be fooled by its 6 cores, its performance surprisingly close to the much more expensive last gen i9 11900K with 8 cores. Now even a NVIDIA 3090 graphic card is a bottle neck for this CPU, that is crazy.

Wonderful performance, great vfm, pretty terrible cooler. A massive upgrade (naturally lol) from my previous CPU, a ten year old i7 3770k. Didn’t change GPU, seeing a 20fps boost to my low end and 10fps average in AC Valhalla.

The stock cooler isn’t worth installing though. Very loud, spins up a lot, which to me seems like it’s barely adequate. I had hoped AMD’s Wraith would make Intel respond with better, but no. However it’s essentially a free cooler so I’m not complaining.

Il Ryzen 5 2600X overcloccato a 4.5GHz stabili con dissipatore stock MOSTRUOSO. Prestazioni da paura e temperature bassissime. Questanno la vedo dura per Intel.

Just recently upgraded from a E5-2620(6-Core[s]) to this brilliant E5-2665(8-Core[s]) which actually has just a couple/few extra options than its sister[2660-8 core*]. It’s unlocked, more boost features etc.

It runs a little cooler as well, which is a plus! It has. 4 GHz more speed than the 2620, and I believe. 2 GHz more than 2660. Personally, I use this processor in my Crypto/VM (Virtualboxes) build. I normally have 3-4 VMs going (different ones, doing different things) and this CPU does all that I need with ease!!!.

Gaming too!! Highly recommended on all ends/aspects! Plus, for under $18, you’ll have an amazing gaming/streaming CPU. Your options are almost endless.

I bought this product because I wanted to run a genuine PCIe 3. 0 build using the X79 Intel Chipset and an Intel rated Rev 3. 0 CPU. This paragraph here is my last one but I have dropped it in here so you can get the XEON E5-1660 info before reading the story behind it: I have sold the motherboard and CPU.

I cannot take a chance with the Xeon, other than I checked it is in perfect working order and Intel has confirmed it is the newest and best and covered by warranty. It is back in the box as Test Only and New and will be on EBay asap.

I cannot afford to build again after my losses and someone else will benefit from each one of these purchases including this XEON E5 -1660, which is REV 3. 0 and is all and more than the 3960X was supposed to be.

For the common home user, enthusiast, gamer, work-at-home, and build-your-own Desktop Computer, the only CPU that would legitimize every motherboard company’s promised advertisement, was an Intel Xeon CPU.

The Asus P9X79 WS (workstation) was the only Asus motherboard that was in the above mentioned build category, which listed the Xeon E5 1620, 1650, and 1660 as a compatible CPU. All of the X79 Gigabyte Boards listed the Xeon as a compatible CPU.

Those were my two Motherboard company options from past experience. I had already purchased an Asus P9X79 PRO motherboard and the Intel 3930K Sandy Bridge E along with an Evga GTX 680 FTW+ 4GB Video Card, which was PCIe 3.

0 capable, and the Areca 1882ix-12 4GB Memory, Rev. 3. 0 Raid Controller Card which also was rated as PCIe 3. 0 capable. These four components were all purchased based on the newly released PCIe 3. 0 capable motherboards.

Just these 4 components of the many needed components for the Desktop PC build, added up to nearly $2,500. I waited several months before opening any of the components due to the swirling rumors that apart from a “Registry Hack” or the small driver patch released by NVidia; PCIe 3.

0 was at best a “better-than-nothing” improvement over PCIe 2. 0. I was beyond my one month return time, but at least I had unopened New products if I were to decide to sell, unconvinced that the rumors and contradictory stories coming directly from Intel, NVidia, and the Motherboard companies, warranted my opening of $2,500 of quickly aging products.

One day, based on a number of Forum’s and News Outlet’s reports, that good news was coming, I got out the razor blade and opened each package with precision; a step of faith with a backup plan that if I were to sell I could at least sell as Tested Only and basically new components that when repackaged it would be obvious to any buyer that what they saw would match my story that these components had less than two hours of use.

Before the long-waited unboxing contacted Asus directly through phone and email to confirm that I was in safe territory. It turns out that the first phase of setting up and installing drivers, was unsuccessful I built the PC, updated the BIOS, loaded Windows 7 X64, installed every new driver, and ensured that this build was as pure as it could be.

No PCIe 3. 0. I have sold the motherboard and CPU. I cannot take a chance with the XEON E5-1600 as it is too valuable and will be an easy sell on EBay although I will probably lose more money. I did put it in the Asus X79 PRO to check it out completely before my return time expired.

I didnt want to open it but had no choice because I cant sell a product that I am unable to vouch for.

Works great. Reliable with Intel DX79SR motherboard. Somewhat high power consumption in idle mode. This was expected from this old chip. Motherboard BIOS was configured for performance.

The 6700k is still relevant, and still gives me 100fps in Days Gone (Steam) on all high settings at 1440p with shadows and lighting on medium (barely even noticeable difference). Gets about 50-56fps in Cyber Punk 2077 with DLSS on, and minimal/no RT features on.

With an RTX 2070. Intel is still using the 14nm process, but its been highly revised and altered/updated since 6000 series CPUs. Theyve been able to squeeze way more cores and way higher clock speed in the latest models.

So 6700k is pretty behind in its raw power and multithreaded performance compared the latest CPUs.

While the 6700k and and the 4790k perform pretty closely in games, the 6700k adds new features that the 4790k lacks, and for me, the added expense is fully justified. DDR4 RAM, while more expensive, is faster.

The 6700k itself is power power efficient, electricity is not free. The 4790k is not as future-proof as the 6700k, as Z170 motherboards (And of course the accompanying Skylake processors) have support now for USB 3.

1 Gen 2, which is a very nice new feature, PCIe 3. 0 x4 M. 2 support for hilariously faster storage speeds, and if you buy a motherboard with support for it, ThunderBolt 3 support, which is just another feature with ludicrous data transfer speed.

In conclusion, the 6700k is more expensive than the 4790k. Whether or not the price difference is worth it is entirely up to your use case, but in my opinion, if any one of the newer features I mentioned sounds like something you would use, it’s worth the premium.

Doubly so if you plan on acquiring a new smartphone in the next few years, as USB Type-C is quickly becoming a standard on smartphones, as well. If you’re considering whether to purchase the 6700k or go for the 6800k, I would suggest viewing HardwareCanucks’ video comparison between the two.

It should address any information needed for most people to make the decision.

I realize this is partially the chipset failure (Z170), but it needs USB 3. 1 support. The 6700k with the Z170 chipset has massive issues trying to actually deliver everything it promises. The chipset allows for multiple M.

2 SSDs (2 and even 3 on some motherboards), but if you put 2 current NVMe SSDs capable of 2500MB/s reads in a RAID-0 you will quickly hit the 4GB/s bandwidth limitation of the chipset to CPU link. In theory it should be around 5000MB/s, but it only hits around 3500MB/s.

That and with both M. 2 slots filled, there isn’t enough PCIe lanes left over for the rest of the system — on my motherboard, it disables all 3 of it’s SATA Express ports (or forces one SSD to run at half speed which isn’t much of an option).

Without an operational SATA Express port, the USB 3. 1 front port connection doesn’t work. Odd that a USB 3. 1 port connects via SATA Express, but it does. With the limited PCIe lanes available off the processor itself, motherboard manufacturers then have to play games with switches to try and support SLI/Crossfire which increases the cost of the motherboard significantly.

Seriously Intel, get your stuff together. It’s 2016. Your best desktop gaming processor needs more PCIe lanes, and quad channel memory support. Your chipset needs USB 3. 1 support, and more SATA 3/Sata Express ports and don’t share them with the M.

Disclamer: This product is used in a software development workstation by day, and gaming rig by night, with a SuperMicro SuperChassis 747BTQ-R1K62B barebone kit, as an upgrade to a pair of Xeon E5-2630 v2.

I came to this part with great hopes of reviving my old workstation as I patiently wait for Zen3 Threadrippers. I have been considering it since the day I built the machine originally, but the 2k+ price tag per chip was way out of budget for me and I had to settle for way way less than I wanted.

Since this day, my only concern was the cooling performance of my current gear. While the case is designed to withstand pretty much anything you could throw at it, I wasn’t so sure of the tower coolers than came with the kit.

Fast forward 6 years and, as expected, these CPUs are clear top of the line products. The performance difference with the previous midrange chips that were in this system is outstanding and, even higher than expected.

It is amazing to see the difference 800 mHz extra base clock can do. My cooling concerns were also way overblown as going from 65 to 150 watt TDP only raised the temps from 35 to 68 deg C under a heavy Prime95 load.

While it isn’t a modern CPU with tons of features like AVX2, fancy new virtualisation extensions, and insane performance, a pair of those is still more than capable today. I often run multiple VMs for development and.

well. I frankly don’t even care to close them when I fire up a game. The amount of PCIe lanes is more than enough to get a GPU, sound card, and multiple NVME SSDs in your system, just like you would expect of a modern high end machine.

Besides the still limited clock speed by today’s standards, it will perform incredibly well in almost every scenarios and are a great value with perfs that are on par with an 8700k (per chip) as long as your workload scales well.

The Xeon E3-1275 v2 was the perfect CPU upgrade to keep my 2011 pre-built PC relevant in 2021. I had been running the original Core i3 2120 for the entire time, but it had been showing its age lately.

I felt this platform was still very much usable even 10 years later and I was not willing to part ways with it just yet in favor of an entirely new system, which would have cost quite a bit more money.

This particular CPU model comes with integrated graphics, something many Xeons do not have enabled. A significantly more expensive Core i7-3770K might yield a slight performance advantage, but my Joshua H61 motherboard would not be able to overclock it and even if it could, the motherboard only supports the included proprietary cooler, which I dont believe would be able to keep the 3770K comfortably cool anyway.

So, I opted for the E3-1275 v2. Yes, it is the end of the road for this platform processor-wise, but it has brought snappy performance to and breathed new life into my aging system. (I also maxed out the motherboards memory capacity to 16GB, which certainly helps.

) Id say its good for another 45 years. I recommend this CPU for those who: 1. Want to squeeze a little more life out of their LGA 1155 systems, 2. Have anything less than a Core i7 or non-hyperthreaded Xeon,and 3.

Can find one of these for under $100.

Performance boost for $430. 00 ( 18 core 2. 30 GHZ )? Not really noticeable. It should render 3 times faster than my Intel ( 6 core ) i7 4 GHz chip, but I really do not see it. Single core should go to turbo–which would make it just a tad slower than the i7, but it never gets to 3.

6, only about 3! It is rendering faster, but not what I expected. Single core performance is noticeably slower, but livable. The reason to go to xeon? Did not have to change out any of the original components to get a speed boost.

If I upgrade to AMD, I have to change out motherboard, maybe power supply, maybe memory. The price different would be double or triple what I paid—but it would be at least twice as fast as the xeon! I have managed to get the xeon to render at 2.

65 GHZ, that’s for all 36 CPU’s, so I know it is over twice as fast, its just not all that obvious at the level I am working at. My system is water cooled and it took me 10 minutes to change out the chips.

It took a little longer to tweak out the motherboards OS. Just have to save up for a faster and more advanced CPU.
