I’ve been using Noctua coolers for years in my builds, and have nothing bad to say about the cooler itself. The only reason I’m giving a lower rating is the wait on an LGA1700 adapter. It’s being sold as compatible out of the box since December, yet mine didn’t have the adapter.

On thing that annoys me when I hear the criticism of Noctua coolers is that they are expensive. In my opinion this criticism is unfair considering what you get with the cooler: 1) An incredibly easy mounting system for AMD and Intel, plus you can get a free AM4 mounting kit for Ryzen from Noctua.
2) An extra long Phillips screwdriver which is not just useful for installing the cooler but also for building the rest of your system. 3) A syringe of excellent Noctua NT-H1Thermal Paste which is consistently near the top of any reviews of thermal paste – look for yourself.
This saves you about 6 compared to other coolers where you have to buy the paste separate because what is supplied is poor quality. 4) A nigh on silent fan which will remain silent for many years. (unlike other fans which start to shake, rattle and roll after about a year or so.
5) The fan supplied with the cooler is a PWM fan. This means you can set up a profile for your motherboard to only have the fan spin as fast as needed, or even turned off if you are only doing things like browsing the Internet.
6) A 4-pin Low Noise Adapter which will allow you to slow down the fan whilst still allowing for variable fan speed. For other coolers you would have to fork out another 4 for something like this. 7) Mounts are supplied so that you can add another 92mm fan to the other side in a push-pull configuration and the second fan will not interfere with any RAM.
8) Go look at reviews and you will find that this cooler outperforms other coolers which are a lot larger – numbers don’t lie – and give you no end of hassle with RAM clearance etc. I don’t work for Noctua but I have been buying their fans and coolers for about 10 years now, and I have yet to have one of the fans become loud or fail on me – so I am a fan-boy if you like 😀 It’s not so much that you should have a reason for buying one of these coolers, it’s that you should have a reason for NOT buying one.
Nice and small for ITX builds, put mine in a Thermaltake V1 case fits easily, dead easy to install and well made. Installed mine on top of a Ryzen 5 temps at idle 45 to 50 which is a lot higher than i expected, however max temp is 74 which is very good for the size.
Only gave 4 stars as expecting slightly better idle temps. I have checked installation and it is all tight and fine, used the supplied Noctua paste. I am going to replace the 200mm front with a Noctua and add a couple of noctua 80mm rear fans to see if this makes a difference.
It is quite pricey given the competition however Noctua is quality and sometimes quality costs.

I am running an non OC 1800x, I idle at around 35-46c, a little high for my tastes but not dangerous levels, on load I reach up to 70-80c, well within acceptable operating temps So in a nutshell it works, However I would like to see my temps at least 20c lower than this, to that end this cooler is not designed for best performance As it is listed as a compact quiet and low profile I will go into detail about those point specifically, It is not as ‘small’ as its sister cooler but it does indeed sit well below the clearance of most high performance graphics cards, I have a 1080 TI and the reaches barley half way along the width of the GFX card, Clearance between RAM and GFX card is as you might expect, with at least an inch clearance between these components, more in the case of the GFX card.
Using a turbo fan speed profile on my MOBO, Crosshair VI Hero, I do not hear the fan over my system fans or the transistors in the GFX card, my PC is situated on my desk a foot away from me, At full power you will hear the fan but it is in no way too loud and the only time I have noticed the fan speed up to full is under synthetic loads.
Summary: The Noctua NH-L9x65 is a great cooler if you’re not planning on putting your CPU though it’s paces and serves well in low form factor cases and situations where case real-estate is limited. That said if you are looking for performance this is not the cooler for you.
When I read the other review, I thought the guy had made a silly installation mistake or something, but how wrong I was, this cooler keeps my 1600x at 70c IDLE! I have yet to stress it I am afraid to, but when doing a lot of PDF work it hits 90 nearly instantly! I do NOT recommend this cooler.
Noctua’s website suggested this is OK for a 2700x in a well ventilated case. I can confirm that in an mini-itx case with the psu close above the cpu- it doesn’t work! 95degs under load, avoid for this cpu.

This is the first time I’ve installed an aftermarket cpu cooler. Only ever used the ones that came with the processor (which apparently they don’t anymore). I’ve been Argonauting my other PC for 15 years and this is the first completely fresh build since then (though I did bring over the Seasonic 850 platinum rated power supply that I had installed in the old one earlier this year; I put a Corsair 550 in the old one and still use it for mobile recording).
This is a workstation on which i do audio work and I’m angling toward silence. It’s an i9-10850k 3. 6Ghz running at constant 4. 8 for stability, and the temperature stays below 50 degrees Celsius easily so far in a dry 70 degree F ambient environment.
I am waiting on a set of Noctua case fans and am currently running the new system with the stock fans in the Fractal Define 7 which do not allow motherboard speed control. It’s not loud but it’s not silent.
I made an early attempt to overclock to 5. 2 GHz and the system broke to the point of needing to reinstall windows, but otherwise it’s been snappy and all programs are running better than I could have imagined before with seemingly no stress on the system.
Not sure how much this heatsink has to do with that, but it’s definitely not hurting. I guess I should also say that I’ve never manually overclocked before and thought I should try to get the most out of what I have going on, but might have done something wrong.
In any case, I’m sure this cooler was not the reason the 5. 2 overclock failed. I’m a little concerned about the weight of the heatsink but honestly once it was put together it seemed like it wasn’t pulling on anything too hard.
The screw system between the heatsink and the mounts was a little janky coming together. Only two screws, each on opposite sides of the processor. The male side is on the mounting brackets, and on the heatsink itself is a female screw with springs.
I’m not sure why there are springs; they may only serve to complicate the process of achieving an optimal mate between the plate on the heatsink and the processor, obfuscating the amount of torque you’re applying.
Mounting the heatsink to its own brackets was the hardest part. One screw would go in, then I would twist and twist on the other but the screw wouldn’t mate with the bolt. I went back and forth several times, easily getting the first screw to engage and being careful not to tighten it any more than necessary for it to simply be engaged, then moving to the other to try to get it to engage and twisting and twisting and it just wouldn’t.
This process did give me an opportunity to see that I had not applied enough thermal paste, then to see that I had applied too much and wipe it off the edges of things. (Microfiber cloth, 99% alcohol.
) Mounting would seem more stable to me if there were four screws through a structure integrated into the heatsink itself and then into the brackets that come in from behind the motherboard, but then it would be less modular and different models would have to be made for different processors and it would probably cost 7x as much and apparently this way is fine so.
let’s do it. Seems nice, keeps things cool. Just be careful not to bust anything when you’re screwing it all together.
This thing is awesome. It’s tall, but if you have the space for it in the case, it is worth it. Not too difficult to install, just pay attention and make sure everything is facing the right direction.
The offset is perfect to clear RAM with heatsinks on them. Lets my 11700K run full out with no thermal throttling even with a little overclocking. I did swap out the stock fan with a black one and added the optional second one.
Repurposed the original as an extra top exhaust. Came with all the extra hardware needed which is a nice touch.
Ah the old D15. In a field where tech moves so fast like computers a part being produced and considered high quality year after year is special. If you not the biggest stickler of minor noises from you PC I genuinely recommend this cooler.
Be careful tho the fins are sharp so when working on your rig you can easily draw blood. I’ve done it on both of these I’ve installed and well. Just just say it’s taken the blood needed to perform the black magic it uses to keep you cpu cool.

I ran an AMD CPU with the stock cooler in a PC for a couple of years but was getting annoyed at how loud the fan was. As I was building a new budget PC for a family member that would be located in a bedroom, I decided to get this cooler for it, as it seemed to be well-reviewed, inexpensive, and quiet.
I got a second one for the old PC at the same time. The cooler comes with stand-offs/brackets for multiple sockets, but I only needed the AM4 socket ones. It also comes with a small (but sufficient) tube of thermal compound – I used 2/3rds of a tube for each CPU.
Both fans can be daisy-chained off one motherboard header. Mounting was easy, following the video guide from Arctic, which included exactly which parts to use. The only difficulty on the old (ASRock) board was that the backplate was ‘loose’, meaning it needed to be pushed up from behind the motherboard so the thumbscrews could reach the standoffs.
The fans need to be detached before mounting then clipped back on after, which was a little fiddly but not a huge issue. The fans are very quiet – it is noticeably quieter (and cooler) than the stock heatsink.
First the reason for this purchase was the AMD Wraith Stealth wasn’t up to the job of playing Star Citizen. The temps were close to 85 and prior to a light dusting, the game would crash. This was with all fans on full.
Installing the unit was relatively straight forward with the online instructions. They must have improved on them as some reviews complain about how difficult its to install and confusing. It can be fiddly, but take you time and its golden.
My install was on an AM4 socket system with a Ryzen 5 3600 I was expecting a decrease in Temps but 10 degrees or so, but was stunned that my temps playing Star Citizen hardly went about 52 degrees. The fans were on full.
I wear headphones mainly so im not bothered about fan noise. Overall a decent product that has great performance on my system. Installing is fiddly & can be confusing with all the fixings in the box.

A little fiddly to attach the fans to the heatsink and was dubious about the plate being narrower than the AM4 6500x chip I fitted this above, but this runs increadibly cool. Was seeing idle temps of 65c and peak of 95c with the automatic clock throttling kicking using the stock CPU.
Idles as low as 35c now and peaks around 65c with the odd spike to 70c. Running the cooler on silent mode in bios and it only occasionally picks up the volume beyond a whisper. Previous CPU was a FX-6300 BE with an IceQ cooler.
That was an excellent cooler but could still hit peaks in the 90’s. Sound profile is similar. Just don’t attach your exhaust/intake fans the wrong way around as I initially did – that ended up just as cool but it sounded like a jet engine!.

The Noctua cpu cooler is a quiet, compact CPU cooler that fits very nicely inside my ITX-mini case. It was easy to install, and it has run without incident as I’ve maxed out my new linux box with multithreaded applications in scientific computing.
I have no trouble keeping all 16 virtual cores busy handling thousands of queued threads running in parallel on my midrange 8 CPU Ryzen chip, and while I can hear the fan spin up, it hasn’t been a bother, and there has been no adverse overheating, even with sustained maximum use.
The hardest part was unpacking the *naming* convention. Noctua NH-L9a is for the AM4. The Noctual NH-L9i is the intel mothernboard version. The difference is clear *after* you see them side by side, but not before.
Microcenter was decent about swapping my mispurchased Intel version for the correct AMD version.
Overall, this cpu cooler serves its purpose. My case has two motherboards in it and the stock Wraith cooler on the second board was obstructing my second and third PCI-e slots. This cooler does run several degrees hotter than the Wraith Cooler due to having a smaller heatsink.
It was slightly difficult to install on the mini-ITX board due to the wider spread of the heatsink. But these problems were expected going into it. On the plus side, the fan is sufficiently silent even without the low noise adapter, which I would not suggest using as it makes the cooler run even hotter.
My biggest complaint is that the fan is not a standard size fan, and as a result I’m stuck with the hideously ugly colors that don’t match the rest of my case at all. It would be nice if there was a black or clear fan that would fit on this, preferably with an RGB option.

After my upgrade, I’m building a computer for someone else. The case won’t allow for an AIO cooler or a tower-type cooler, so I went with this low-profile Noctua. This kit is specifically for the AM4 socket.
Installation took me about 10 minutes, and two of those minutes were devoted to applying thermal paste to the first-gen Ryzen 7 CPU. I booted and went straight to the BIOS, where the temp reported was in the low 40s.
That’s right where it should be with the CPU on idle. Without any heatsink or fan, the CPU immediately rose to the 90s and shut down – all within about 35 seconds. I touched the CPU and was shocked at how hot it got.
I haven’t installed an OS, but it looks like this should do the trick for this mini-build. I purchased this over competing products because of Noctua’s reputation. Upon opening the box, I found that everything was very organized, and the materials seemed to be of very high quality.
This cooler is working beautifully on my recently-updated firewall in 3U rackmount case. The cooler on the old board (an AM2+ Athlon64 X2) crapped out and the CPU and RAM on that board was a bit too under-powered to handle the amount of traffic flowing through the gateway, so I ended up swapping some boards around to replace it with an older-model Intel quad-core.
Unfortunately, the Noctua cooler that had been on the replacement board/CPU wouldn’t fit in my 3U case so I needed something new. The HN-L9x65 fit perfectly on the old Noctua mount (so I didn’t even have to replace the backplate) and easily fits in the case (I think it’d even make it in a 2U case, though I haven’t measured).
Perfectly quiet and given the longevity of Noctua fans, I expect it to run for years and years without trouble. I think I might even pick up another one to resurrect the AM2+ board (if it will fit in a 2U case) and give that a second life as a small Linux server.

Probably gross overkill for cooling in this setup. Packaged in a foam-lined case like a fine watch: even the screws are set in foam cutouts. Even though Newegg said that it ships from Noctua, it arrived in a Newegg box with another order.

Chose this cooler for a K39 (3. 9L) PC build, was impressed by the build quality and it’s range of support for SSF cases. Keeps my CPU nice and cool while gaming. Extras including thermal paste and fan cables are supplied which is nice, my only con for this item is the colour of the fan, however a black option is also available.

When reading other reviews here, I see people running their CPUs well above the 68c limit recommended by AMD for *all* 1st and 2nd gen Threadripper. I’m running a first gen Threadripper 1900x. At full load I’m sitting rock steady at 69c.
(Not being cheeky with the temp. ) That’s one degree hotter than AMD specs. Either I am running a bit hot or the temp reading is off. For that alone, I take one egg away. Otherwise, I have two 1080’s with fans that far outpace my Noctua and therefore this fan “is” silent.
Tip: Read the installation instructions before installing. I did and it saved me from any hardship. Threadripper is not like any other CPU skt I’ve worked with. You’ve been warned. Edit: I bought a second fan for this cooler.
If you have the room, this is the best heatpipe HSF I’ve ever used. Sort of funny situation, my H11SSL-i kept flagging an error, because the fan was going so slowly, so it’s now running at full speed, and still pretty quiet.
Sometimes the CPU is cooled to slightly below ambient! It does what I wanted and it does it very well, I’ll buy more Noctua HSFs in future.

Due to the ease of installation, I was able to try out this cooler in many configurations. First with the one included fan in push & pull [and] in vertical and horizontal mounting. Then I did the same with 2 fans.
For context, my rig is a I7-10700K with a RTX 3070, 25c ambient (summer) and a cheap-ish case with average (at best) airflow. In my experience, this cooler is not adequate for serious overclocking on a high-core count CPU.
I have not been able to finish a benchmark (blender bmw 2. 93. 1) before hitting 99c (my personal limit) in stock (5. 1Ghz) settings. I find about 1. 25-1. 3v (usually around 48-4900mhz all cores) to be about the max it can handle.
Does much better gaming (lower workload). If you’re looking for an air cooler under $100, and are running a stock I7 or an unlocked I5/Ryzen 5, I think this merits strong consideration, but plan on buying a second fan.
