20 Best Coverage For Grey Hair (2023 Updated)

Just got this yesterday and here’s the deal yall… it’s basically heavily pigmented powder eyeshadow that you pack on your roots to “disguise them instantly” with a two sided densely packed brush. Ok, so I can see this product working wonders for grey roots on dark and black hair, no doubt that’s why it’s won Allures Best of Beauty several years in a row.

( also a reason I picked it up in the first place, I shoulda researched a little more) But, for us blondeys , try as it might and claim as it does, this product isnt going to cover dark roots up, it’s just not.

It literally can’t. It is common sense really I was just hoping for a magic product or something here and let’s face it, they don’t exist, you have to cancel out the color completely through bleaching then adding tones lowlights whatnot and that is the only way to truly make dark roots blonde.

The Only way. But if you’re wanting grey coverup I see this product working wonders!!.

Such a good product when it comes to being able to camouflage your roots. So many of my clients asked me about root concealer products during covid when I couldn’t color their hair. And I always recommend this wonderful product to them.

It comes like this and I believe it also comes in a spray form, both provide excellent coverage to hold you over between color touch-up services. The light brown goes great with blondes too, because it gives a great dimension and depth to blondes.

This product is beautifully pigmented and a little goes a long way, just add water and blend with the contents of the compact and gently brush it on to cover grey. With the spray make sure your spraying atleast 8” away to avoid too much product.

A little goes a long way. No one likes gray, and who wants to resort to box dye and mess up your color between appointments. This is the way to go! It was a covid necessity, but also works well if you just are between appointments and have a few pesky greys.

I’m going to tell you a little secret! I use this Wow touch up in red for my eyebrows. I have never been able to find a decent color in any pencil, brow dip, or brow powder to match my eyebrows and this Wow product for hair touch up worked for me.

I’ve also used it to touch up my grays in but it doesn’t match my hair color. Great product all and all though. They just need to come with a rocking red to hook me up.

Easy to use. Great coverage for grey roots. Using brown for medium blonde hair. Spray over grey roots, let sit for a while, comb trough to blend in. It stays on till you wash your hair again. Tried 2 other name brands but will only continue to use this product.

Gets rid of those stubborn greys! Since I haven’t been able to have my hair professionally touched up, I’ve relied on spray-on temporary color and it really works! It’s getting kind of hard to find them online, since no doubt many thousands of people have the same problem as I did, so when you see one, grab it!.

Great product. ! You can cover your grey before or after styling or both. It is light as a feather and looks natural. No mess and is not sticky or gummy. You won’t notice anything except that your grey is gone! Love it!.

I used the Medium Brown Touch of Gray for years then switched to Control GX for about a year. The GX seemed easier but not great coverage unless I used very frequently and seemed to get blotchy dark areas etc.

My new Barber said stop using it. It doesn’t look good. I went back to Touch of Gray, My Barber said what did you do it looks great? So I use it about every 2 weeks On day of haircut (#6 blade on sides) short on top and then 2 weeks later which takes me to next haircut 2-3 weeks.

I don’t use the Comb I don’t use enclosed oversized plastic gloves (too Messy) I use latex gloves apply it all over and wipe off any that gets on skin with tissue. I leave it on about 7 min I don’t get the advertised Salt and Pepper but more overall coverage that is somewhat translucent and shows some gray depending on light conditions It looks natural I tell some people I color my hair and they said they never would have guessed.

I have used hair coloring products (Original JFM + others) for years and also used Touch of Gray previously. Since I have colored my hair 6-8 times per year for over 10 years, I find it relatively easy to color my hair.

My recent experience was frustrating because it seemed like the coloring out of the tube was a lot thinner and runny. I didn’t care for the comb included. I left the product on my hair for 10 minutes versus the 5 minutes (starts when 100% complete with application) as instructed.

Results were HANDFULS OF GRAY and not touch of gray. The frustration when dealing with a runny product was compounded by the weak gray coverage. Maybe I got a bad batch. This product was not easy to use, did not get rid of desired amount of gray and was messy to apply.

I will switch to the Autostop product because of all the prior success with JFM products.

It’s a lot closer to black than brown, but nothing wrong with that unless you’re expecting brown. It could be that it shows darker on me since my original natural color is black, even though it’s white now.

Main thing is it looks like a natural color. The next shade darker (Black) can look unnatural, with a purple tint. So I recommend Dark Brown over Black even if you’re looking for black.

I have very fine (but ample) wavy/puffy hair that goes to my mid back. It’s naturally about a dark/medium brown that sun bleaches easily. I used to dye my hair with N4 and vol 20 developer but my hairdresser said my natural colour is so close that it’s not worth the damage I was causing.

Because of how fine and wavy my hair is it just doesn’t react well to any kind of harsh chemicals and quickly becomes dry and brittle. My hairdresser suggested transitioning to a semi and this product is almost perfect! Yes, it doesn’t last as long as permanent but I really like how it allows my natural tones to still show vs the solid single tone you get from permanent.

You don’t get the harsh grow out line and there’s zero long-term damage risks. I have like 5 grey hairs and it doesn’t do a whole lot for them but it does blend them for the first few washes. I’ve removed a star because it bleeds every time you wash your hair and by the time the bleeding stops the colour is gone.

I wanted to love this SO bad. It’s so easy and convenient. I could have touched up my hair anytime and any day of the week with ease. However- This is neither “medium brown” OR ashy. Total BRASS PALE BROWN, if you can call it brown at all.

This product was absolutely awful. I also tried the black. Again. black is NOT black. At best, it came out a brassy medium brown. So so so disappointed.

After years of using curl mousse products, it’s definitely the best one i ever had !!! First, the smell is gorgeous, and i couldn’t stop smelling my hair even one day after using it, that’s how divine it is ! Second, the texture is so smooth !! Really felt amazing compared to the other mousses i tried ! And let’s not forget the result ! Which i am very happy with, did help making my curls look nice and did not make huge and hard bulks of hair or anything as some would have done from what i used to have before.

Definitely recommend, think i’ll stick to this one from now on !! :).

Some other reviews of Rita Hazan Root Concealer Touch Up Spray in color Dark Blonde complained that the color was too dark. Some even described it as black which I disagree with. It took a little time to figure out how to spray it on lightly wait a few minutes before brushing your hair to have a more natural look.

I was happy to see the dark blonde color was a more neutral or ash tone rather than gold. I also have the Rita Hazan color Blonde, it is much lighter in color. I use both and am very happy with the product.

I gave it a 4 star because I feel you should get more than just 2 oz for the price you pay.

If you’ve got gray roots or even thinning hair, this spray is just THE BEST!! The Red really blends with my Dark Auburn/Burgundy color and it stays on until you wash it out. I’ve tried other touch up products but this one is the best by far! My hair is thin in areas on top of my head.

I spray this on those areas and it helps to conceal and cover my thinness. I buy 2 cans so that I never run out. Great price as it sells for $25 on Amazon. It also comes in Blonde, Brunette and Black.

I usually use Everpro to touch up my roots before salon day. My greys come in about two weeks after I get my hair colored. I get all over color and highlights so my roots are dark and grey. I use a touch up at my temples and a touch on my crown at my part.

I grabbed this to try because it was on clearance. Now I know why it was on clearance. I got the dark blonde. The color wasn’t bad, it was a little off. It applied nicely. I applied it before bed on clean hair.

It leaves residue and texture though. My roots felt like I used a ton of dry shampoo on super greasy roots and then sprayed hair spray. It wasn’t sticky, but it was really heavy on my hair. Like brushed out hair spray.

Definitely won’t repurchase.

Green white and black box will take your hair out!!!! It colors good but, you will notice your hair breaking off!!! Don’t use it unless you want your hair damaged!!!!

Worked great, not so sticky like regular mascara I tried! Big mess. This you have to just remove a little by brushing off some on tissue then apply. Lasts long. Great product. & seller recommended.

Great application. Blends perfectly without hardening so you can blend in with a brush. Choose a few different colors to blend in so it looks more natural with all strands of your hair. Great product!

I would give this a zero stars if I could. I dyed my hair with this brands BLACK DYE a couple years ago, (just came up in my snap memories) and I had the WORST reaction. I’ve never had a reaction to any other dye (I was Emo) my head swelled, my eye was swollen shut, I had hives all over my scalp, and around my ears, forehead and neck.

Probably top 3 worst pain I’ve ever been in. Do not use this dye.

The product is something new we had to try since they no longer sell the liquid form of this product, but we were totally satisfied with the product coming in a gel form and mixing it. The color was not applied with a brush comb as suggested, I mixed it and put it in the color bottle and it was fine.

Good color, easier to use in the bottle then the liquid. I think I used even less with this product for better results.

Its a nice color but it bleeds every time i shower or get my hair wet, it stained my hair towels and when i try to do a hairstyle and my hair is somewhat damp my hands get red, the color doesn’t last very long at all it faded within like the first week, i did have like a slight ombre in my hair so that might be why but the majority of my hair was dark brown and it still faded.

It sucks because it looks SO GOOD at my roots and its nice and vibrant and i wish it was that vibrant throughout my whole hair. Too bad it bleeds because it really is a stunning color.

My mom uses this for her scalp, thinning hair. I tried it at my temples as the only place my greys have come in. Loved it! I have a grey hair in my brow. It sticks straight out. Couldn’t find 1 of 7 pairs of tweezers so I picked up my tweeze.

Try it, you will love it! Btw, it is a temporary color so even if you put it on too dark, just run a little water over your hair and lessen the tone. At least that is what I found to help.

I use the dark brown and use it quite often in between coloring. It’s easy to apply, stays put and doesn’t run or transfer to other surfaces. It is easy to remove once you shampoo. This spray for coverage on gray hair is the best EVER. Ive tried the coloring sticks the type of wand ( like mascara). Too much smeari g and looks clupy and fake. Love this product. My sisters and friends are using this product.

I discovered this product during an emergency visit to Blo BlowDryBar in West Village. My blonde roots grow out pretty quickly and I have a dark brown to blonde balayage, so this powder is my savior.

It prevents me from having to get a root touch up every 3 weeks. The color is absolute perfection and the texture sticks to the hair strands and not to the scalp so it looks completely natural. It even manages to fill in any sparse areas to make your hair look fuller and thicker.

I received it as a gift, complimentary from Color Wow. It works! Save my life!! I love it so much. It is very good and lasting coverage, it stays on until the next time you wash your hair. It doesn’t stain my pillows but of course stains my fingers if I rub the covered area.

People need to bear in mind this is not a substitute for dying your hair – it’s for roots only, and of course has a matt, powdery finish because it ultimately is a compact powder. Which makes sense as it’s for the roots, try putting on a hair mascara or something similar and the roots will look greasy and sticky! So Color wow root color up is my favorite root color upper when I don’t have time to sit in the salon or do my own color treatment.

And when you are ready to color, your or your stylist can apply color right over this product, unlike the Marker Pen product below. Much quicker and easier to apply than the mascara wand version – and you can do a larger area – and it’s not sticky like the mascara wand version.

This was gifted by Color Wow. I received this in the shade Dark Brown and I have medium-dark brown roots and balayage throughout my hair. I got this to cover up grays. I usually use a spray root touch up to cover my grays but sometimes it’s hard to control where it goes so I wanted to try a powder option.

While this is good to have in my stash it doesn’t fill my needs 100%. First off, this would be way too time consuming to use on all my gray roots. This is good if you have a small amount that needs touching up or to do the areas in the front of your face.

Secondly this doesn’t cover very well if used on clean hair. It will definitely make the grays look better but you’ll still see them. I find it works best if I apply something to give my roots texture like a dry shampoo.

When I use this after applying dry shampoo the powder sticks to my hair follicles much better and I get way better coverage. Also you have to pat it into your hair and not brush it on. This is still good to have but I still reach for my spray root cover more often and just use this as needed to touch up.

I would still recommend this for those hard to spray spots or if you only have a few grays.

This review is for the platinum/light blonde shade, gifted by Color Wow. I hope it helps any of you who are curious! Whew, the reviews on this shade were SO confusing. I was initially reading through them before receiving this, and I found myself going “omg is it actually game changing or is it horrible? These reviews are polar opposites!!” SO, now that I’ve received it – here’s the thing.

I can believe this works well for some, and fails for others – based on technique as well as root color itself. Let’s start with technique. This is a powder-based product containing added thickeners/longevity boosters.

The directions say to pat it on (no brushing motions, patting instead) while holding your hair flat. What I would add is: you gotta go heavy with it. Think of it like eyeshadow- when you apply it lightly, you get a sheer look, right? Same thing with this product.

Pile it on!! Next, root color itself. See, while the product says it’s for platinum blonde hair, it doesn’t address what color your roots are. Have you ever bought box bleach? (Or just looked at it for anyone who is horrified by the thought lol).

The packaging on box bleach always shows the different results on various hair colors. And guess what – that happens with this! If you are covering medium blonde roots, this is going to be incredible for you.

If your hair is closer to deep brown? Yeah, it may be more of a struggle! Here’s my bottom line: this is a good quick fix. In all my years of being a bleached blonde, I’ve never found a good longer term fix (aside from, you know, a hair appointment).

If you need to look a bit more put together for a special day AND your roots aren’t super dark, pile this on. It does stay all day and imo it does “work” with the application method described on the box.

I actually ordered black & dark brown, both match, but the dark brown is almost a perfect match. Works very well to cover the few grey strands that I have. I m glad I made the choice on these sticks!!!!.

When traveling and the need arrives for gray cover ups, I simply reachinto my hair product bag and render a quick, 30 second aplication. Followed up with black hair gel and I am good to go.

This product Rootflage temporary hair color is an amazing quick change up for your hair. I was delighted to try it. I had been tempted to try a crazy color for a couple of months, but in the end I chose to try the champagne blonde color.

This just was perfect for highlights to my light brown hair. The highlights were subtle but I made them heavier in the front and used the powder to cover roots as well. The fun of it is that you know that it is temporary so you can experiment and not worry because you know you can get it out.

I have to admit, I hate finding random gray hairs and feel the need to either pluck or cover them up. As much as I would like to embrace getting older gracefully, I am still trying to find my peace with the grays.

When I tried Everpro Gray Away I really wanted to find this resolution. A couple of key things to note: This is a spray which is not just for grays, but can help with color regrowth, fine, thinning, and roots.

The downside I found was that you need to protect your clothing prior to use if you do not want it to get colored. What I did like was the ease in which the spray dispersed a fine fist of product evenly.

However, I found that instead of tackling random grays, It was more of a way to fill my thin hair to look more full and even. I really hate when I find a patchy area of scalp which is very obvious. EVERPRO Gray away really helps to fill in those sparse areas and it lasts until you wash it out.

I also like that it is transfer resistant and free of ammonia, peroxide, synthetic dyes, sulfates and parabens. Once I sprayed the Gray Away onto the desired area, it looked very natural and blended well into my natural hair coloring.

Since it can be used with all hair types and textures it is a universal product which comes in select colors. Overall, I would recommend Gray Away as not only an answer to grays but to add fullness and coverage to roots, thinning, and fine hair.

I like the quick and lasting results which this spray delivers.

I have until now only used powder gray cover products on my outgrowth because I am very sensitive to smell of spray products and because I thought that spray products would be messy and more difficult to use.

The pictures I posted show her before and 60 seconds after application and the video shows after I brushed my hair through and put it back up that there was virtually no transfer to my husband’s hand.

The product has a light scent which isn’t too bad and my husband said it was actually quite nice. It wasn’t messy at all and even though I covered my shoulders with a towel I don’t think I need it to.

It was also very fast to use especially for covering just one area if you already have your hair up and they’re just trying to cover a particular area for the day or evening. There was a little bit of transfer if I really rubbed my hand into my hair afterwards but not too much and it washed off easily.

It provides faster coverage than trying to brush on a powder and there wasn’t any fallout which is something that happens with a powder. I actually liked that it was a coverage that wasn’t completely opaque because sometimes those products can look very very fake and actually draw attention to the area where this product makes it look like a natural sort of transition.

I would recommend this product.

I needed the whole kit, not just the color. It needs to be used with gloves and developer, etc. – which I don’t have. This is an item for a hairdresser to purchase, not an end user like me. However I do use Excellence by L’Oreal on a regular basis and I love it.

My color turned out amazing!! (Picture 1 after color was applied) It was sooo beautiful!! The red does fade semi quick though (2nd pic about month after originally getting color) I had this color for around 3 months before I decided to change it again.

We then lightened my hair and the red pulled out just fine but the 2N on my base(roots) pulled red majorly and did not want to come out of my hair. Unfortunately I got impatient and tried to get it lightened again too soon and experienced some damage due to it, this was also due to the stylist not looking out for my hair integrity and putting too high of a developer on my hair and not properly watching it.

(Picture 3 shows after lightener) I have used PM The Color on others as well and their color turns out amazing!! Be cautious of allergic reactions, I’ve had a couple people have a reaction to this product but only if I actually put it on with it touching the scalp.

They did not experience the reaction with highlights/lowlights or getting a balayage, only if it touched the actual scalp/skin.

I think I bought the 3N from a different seller; the 2N from this seller. The 2N was already oxidized. It was orange and thick and didn’t mix well with the developer. It stayed chunky. I would buy this product again.

But not from this seller.

I’ve been using this product for a while. It’s the only hair color that I know that doesn’t make my hair red. I think it’s a good product. They have hair saloons where they only use this type of hair color and Paul Mitchell products.

I also like their shampoo and hair styling gel. I would highly recommend this product and Walmart offers a variety of their hair colors.
