Best Countersink Bit For Wood (2026 Updated)

Disclaimer: I’m a Walmart associate and might get rewarded for this revew (but not neccesarily). This being said, I had a chance to actually hold these bits and do a few holes with them. So these are standard jobber length drill bits intended to drill wood, plastics and metals, including steels and cast iron.

These bits would be ruined used on bricks or concrete, but could be used on drywall occasionally. These are cobalt drill bits, so they work best on tough alloy steels, like drilling out broken bolts, etc.

Because of cobalt they are slightly more expensive than a HSS set. Bits themselves are reasonably sharp out of the box. They have toes reduced for easier sharpening. They’re also split point, so they tend walk less, but only when used in a drill press.

Please note a split point will be gone after a first sharpening, unless you own a Drill Doctor. Flutes are painted, which is a minor annoyance. Shanks are finished smooth, can’t say anything about their hardness, because I couldn’t make them slip in a chuck (but you may).

This set covers a fairly practical size range. The container is durable thick plastic, I wish I could buy it separate too, ‘cos boxes are somewhat inconvenient. All in all it’s a solid set for a homeowner and good for a lot of tasks around the house.

This is a very nicer drill bit set I purchase 4 of these love the way it goes thru wood did not try on metal yet however has a great cutting action great quality very happy with purchase. For the price these bits have surpassed my expectations the only thing is I unknowingly drilled on stainless and burnt up a 1/2 inch bit but I recommend these bits highly! Over the years, I’ve bought more drill bits than you can shake a stick at; until now, replacements for lost and/or broken bits resulted in a rather eclectic mix, needing multiple storage containers to account for manufacturer-to-manufacturer design differences.

I love this drill bit set. bits up to 1/2″ all stored in a waterproof case! In addition, they cut very cleanly and quickly; the cobalt should also make them long-lasting. I would recommend this product.

I worked for a company from 95 to 06 in an R and D shop dealing with some very hard metals that required drilling and placing temperature and pressure probs at specific locations on small turbo generators.

Colbalt bits and very slow drill speed was a must to complete the jobs. When i saw your set of bits on sale i knew i wanted a set for my own use. I retired from the work force in 06 but still do light mechanical work, but wanted what i felt were the best drill bits i could find, i hope these are the ones.

I guard them and am careful about loaning them out. I have the Drill Doctor Sharpening set so i can always sharpen when needed. Thank you. Harry Jensen.

I would have gave it a 4 or 5 star rating if it wasn’t for the price. $ more than double than its worth. Works great on new builds but repairing something already assembled it’s awkward to use. You could get by without it but it’s not as clean looking.

The purchases are never ending now you need a table then clamps etc etc.

Need a new drill bit as mine was getting really dull. I know I could have gotten it sharpened but that would be a difficult process considering where I live. So I just bought new ones. Great service and delivery.

I bought this bit to do some carving in steel, hardened A2 steel to be exact (about as hard as tool steel can be) This bit is the cats meow, it tore through the steel like it was aluminum. I was able to gouge through 3/16″ steel in about 30 seconds, which is quite a feat for a small rotary bit.

If I could give it a higher rating I would. After an hour of constant use I can’t see any dull spots at all. When using it don’t force it, just keep constant pressure and let it do its thing, you’ll see a dramatic difference.

Tips, use at a high RPM, at lower rpm it likes to catch and jitter around, also, wear gloves. The shavings are like tiny hairs and will embed in your skin.

Great bit for the rotatory tool. I haven’t used it on hard metals but everything else is like butta! Highly recommend and it’s like buying the @sweepstakes

This is a good tool to have that has good cutting versatility especially in hard to reach spots. The core significant weakness is that the bit is a little on the thin side compared with the rotozip bits.

I’ve broken a couple of them for that reason. The bit seems just a tad on the pricy side to me as well. Dremel though does have the advantage of coming in a lithium battery version which rotozip does not.

That is a huge difference.

The bits are good quality, but the case is big and clumsy compared to the old metal Craftsman case on my last set of bits. I tried to put the new bits in the old case, but they are just a tad too big to fit which I don’t understand.

I haven’t used them yet to predrill a hole for tapping threads. If they are too far out of tolerance I’ll revise the rating Revision: After using these for about a year, I’d say they are not good quality.

I’ve broken 3 bits so far with very limited use. They are extremely brittle. On top of that, the size tolerances are off — too big.

These drill bits are tough and the case is nice. I would have given 5 stars but it came 1 drill bit short. The 11/32 was missing. Otherwise I highly recommend these. Ive drilled into rolled steel, bar stock and DOM tubing with 0 issues at all.

I use them almost every weekend on metal rojects and they barely even look worn. I would put them right up there with my Snap-On bits I replaced with these after several years of use.

Excellent product. Very precisely made. High quality in every respect. Very good directions included along with a DVD demonstrating the various steps in crafting raised panel doors. Very helpful in conjunction with full color step-by-step written directions.

Definitely recommend this set.

The product image does not do justice. This is a large case and these are substantial Router Bits. Appear to be very well made and heavy duty. Looking forward to first use.

I purchased this set after my hand drill broke and it’s replacement does not take the square shank. I was surprised how it’s tapered shape reduces binding from debris. I found them to be better than longer fluted bits however it’s shank length is not long enough without use of an extension.

So it’s why I give it 4/5 stars.

I needed something to drill in to very hard old wood, non of my bits would even touch it so tried these, and boy am I glad I did, used with an impact driver and it blew my mind how easy they went through 4inch.

A really great set of drills for a good price.

Product branding and design are definitely American thoughts, but I doubt whether it is made in the United States. The material looks good, but it has not been widely used for a long time to test its strength.

The packaging design is very bad, there is no box to fix it. The price is not cheap, you need to make a box yourself to contain these things.

Quality made product. Has a substantial feel, and unlike the offshore products I’ve owned that hang up on the plunge, these operate quite smoothly. A pleasure to use. Excellent design and perfectly engineered product.

I have been installing hinges for years. I purchased this set to see if they would make my cabinet door installation easier and more precise. Boy was I right!! I highly recommend for the amatuer, novice or master.

Time saver and precision.

The 9 piece Bosch Daredevil spade bit set provides a good selection of spade bits ranging from 1/4” to 1” diameter. The bits are nice and sharp and clear material from the hole you are drilling. The two drawbacks of these bits are there don’t drill the cleanest of hole and it is easy to drill deeper than you want to.

These bits are crazy fast. The holes are smooth when finished and not jagged like other spade bits I’ve used. The only down fall is that they are too aggressive for my 12 volt drill. They worked perfect in my 18 volt drill.

Excellent shirt. Light, soft and stink-free. The website recommended a size L, which was the correct fit. This is my first MPG product and I am pleased with the purchase.

I am a woodworkers who is constantly searching for tools and equipment that lasts for a moderate price point. The Diablo Forstener bit is a product that works exceptionly well. This bit side by side with other name brand bits, hands down out performed them 5-1.

I will buy more if needed.

Wow! What can I say about this drill bit that can’t already be said. It cuts holes. The holes have flat bottoms. I guess that’s it. Home Depot support, if your reading this, perhaps don’t require that people leave a 50 character review for items like drill bits, screws, gravel, bags of sand, etc.

We earned a contract to build aircraft test stands and spent hours drilling and tapping 1/4-20 holes on the first stand. Visiting a local distributor, I spotted this kit on the wall and bought one. What a time-saver.

And there are empty slots for the custom bits/taps we also had to use. I cannot recommend this highly enough. Like any other good tool, you take care of it and it does it’s job. Over two years and a half dozen stands (not to mention other projects) — probably thousands of holes — only one drill-tap bit failed.

All done with a C-3 Craftsman 1/2 drill and this bit kit.

This is one of the tools I bought a while ago: just to have it, when the day comes. The day came today, and it shattered at first use. I didn’t trust the “drill, tap, and deburr on one operation” and pre-drilled the hole, just to be safe (wasn’t safe).

Maybe it works with sheetmetal, but for me it proved to be useless. One added star for the packaging.

The product meets my expectation of being meeting the quality of a Dremel item. It interfaces with the Dremel workstation and rotary tool.

I have used these drill bits before and they are excellent. My low rating has to do with the fact that I did an online order with ship to store. They were supposed to be at the store on a Friday – according to my email but were not available when i went to pick them up.

I sculpt and was trying to finish a piece for a client and it really put me in a bind getting it done. I had to extend my day of delivery to my client which makes me look unreliable.

I use them primarily in plastic and soft metal items, drilling and reaming out holes in blocked venturis and filters.

I bought these bits originally to bore holes through some ¾ inch hardwood. The bits drill quick, clean holes and make a much cleaner cut when you bore through the other side. It’s not as clean as hole saw, but it’s a lot better than the tear out you see when you use a spade bit.

It was when I started using these bits for reno projects that I ran into problems 1. I figured the bits would make quick work of drilling holes through 2×4 joists for laying conduit, but I found the bits would bog down about inch into the wood.

Turns out the self-feeding screw tip will rapidly draw the bit into contact with the material and stall the drill. I found this to be a big problem in wood with knots. If you have a really powerful corded drill or a cordless impact driver (which is what I used to finish the job), then you can enough torque to keep these bits turning, but even an 18V drill will stall.

2. Even a small brad nail will wreck these bits. The tips on these bits aren’t low quality, but if they hit a nail it will gouge the cutting blades. I haven’t been able to find a way to file out the damage.

(A Drill Doctor doesn’t work with this speedbor design. ) This led to pick up some good quality DeWalt spade bits (#54-0637-8) for doing rough work like building a deck. They work great, don’t bog down if you use a regular drill, and can be easily sharpened if they take damage from a nail.

I can’t say that the Speedbor bits are a bad product. They work well, but they can damaged so easily that I find they are only useful in a wood shop, not a reno project or work site.

Irwin is top notch and these wood bits are heavy duty and work great … fast! Recommend!

You pay for what you get. I have used milwaukee self feed bits for 30 years. A well maintained bit can drill thousands of holes. face drill to quickly remove wood. no pulling slugs from hole saws and replacing pilot bits.

As a plumbing and hvac contractor for many years the price point is very AFFORDABLE. Can be resharped by hand or professionally. can straighten a crooked hole. I have drilled 4- 2×10 ,joists sandwiched together.

have drilled through top plates in a cathedral ceiling. The older bits are better the steel is harder. NEW OLD STOCK FROM 20 YEARS ago is the ideal bit. The only drawbback a large drill with variable speed and a cluch is the way to.

I alwys used a timberwolf to drill. Works great on a dril press.

The average plumber and electrician will love this bit. Works flawlessly in dry 2x lumber. However the bit lacks the aggressive chip clearing ability necessary to bore accurately through thicker timber.

Chips clog the hole and often trap the bit in the hole unless it is reversed and backed out often. In green and pressure treated lumber this problem is especially troublesome. If you are a timber framer looking for something different, this isn’t the answer.

Sharpen your auger bits and save your money.

I had a chance to review this product at the perfect time. I am refinishing a reclaimed beam for a mantle on my fireplace and needed to drill a few holes so I can secure it to the wall. The wood beam had many nails and the bit worked well.

It stayed sharp and the holes were clean.

I used this bit in the construction of a treehouse for my children. It did exactly what I needed it to do. It is also great for running wires in studs in a house. I highly recommend it.

My experience with Fuller taper point bits began about 1998 (stamped on box) when I shelled out the premium dollars for the Fuller set #8 (10393008). I bought this set because I was not totally happy with the cheaper set of tapered point drills with the more open twist pattern (about one twist per inch).

I found them springy, and more easily bent, limiting their use with power tools and just harder to use (more friction / more resistance) due to the longer face surfaces. The longer twist also means the point is more spade (spoon bit) than point and “augers” into the wood.

Fuller bits at about two twists per inch are stronger, with less friction and two cutting edges at the point for better balance and hits the punch mark on center. Both sets are well used but I will not buy more of the open twist bits.

The recent purchase of Fuller taper point bits was to round out available sizes but also to add some backup for a just in case moment. Fuller bits remain straight and work well with both electric and hand drills, and bit braces.

The only disadvantage of the standard length bit is when using longer screws – there isn’t much shank for the chuck to grab. Longer bits are available. Fuller quality is the go-to for finer work but can handle the tough stuff too.

I’ve always been very suspicious of tapered drills. The geometry of the drill does NOT match the geometry of a wood screw. The math, using the Forest Product Laboratory equations, indicates that holding strength is sacrificed.

I needed to flush install 100 #6×¾” silicon bronze wood screws. So I went with the W. L. Fuller HSS countersink and stop collar. I decided to throw in the tapered drill as a lark, to experiment with, knowing I could always pull the Stanley Screw-Mate parts and put them into the countersink.

After careful alignment of the parts for my screw size, I drilled a test hole and installed the screw. I extracted the screw, cut the wood in half, re-installed the screw to check for THREAD ENGAGEMENT.

This is the key feature to look for. Instead of the engagement shown in the W. L. Fuller catalog, I found 100% Thead Engagement! I was thrilled! I did not expect that!! My suspicion is over. I used the tapered drill to install all 100 screws, leaving the Stanley Screw-Mate parts on the shelf.

We purchased 1/8″ and 11/64″ diameter sizes of these drill bits for use in our production wood shop. They seem to be of high quality to us. We use them for #8 and #10 screw sizes, which is smaller than recommended.

We did find out the 1/8″ are a bit small, especially for hardwoods, but the 11/64″ are perfect in our experience. In our opinion the sizes recommended on the chart are too large.

I read a few reviews before purchasing this product. It comes with a nice case that holds the bits securely. And they are great quality. Definitely recommend these bits.

Used these to drill out cabinet hinge holes on new doors we made to replace some poor-quality melamine doors on an existing over-toilet bath cabinet. The 1″ bit drills a hole that is 7/8″ – 15/16″, so they aren’t a perfect measure.

We used the 1-1/8″ bit (which was bigger than we wanted for the hinges we had, but it was the next size up from the 1 inch size we needed). The holes were clean, but the bit edges were a bit jagged (and therefore drilled slowly) so we don’t suspect these would hold up for commercial use.

For residential use, they fit our needs perfectly. especially for the price. Separately, these bits are at least 4X what we paid for the entire set through CPO. Recommended buy for a DIY-er.

The bits are fine , but the description is wrong: “Includes (7) Brad-Point Bits, 3/16 In. to 19/32 In. (5 to 15mm) Single Flute Centrotec Countersink. ” Theses are not included. Also, if you only count 13 sizes, it’s because the set includes two 1/4″ diameter bits (of course, why not?).
