As the best compound for removing scratches will vary depending on the type and severity of the scratch. For light scratches, a simple polishing compound may be all that is needed. For deeper or more stubborn scratches, however, a more abrasive compound may be necessary.
In either case, it is always best to test the compound on a small, inconspicuous area of the surface before applying it to the scratch itself.

I did a lot of research about fixing the light scratches on my car trunk before purchasing this product. I have mixed reviews about it. It’s a 3-step process. 1) Sand down the scratches with the provided sander pad and water mist.
This was really labor intensive. I ended up attaching the sand pad to a drill to make this part go faster. Still, I probably spent over an hour doing this. You have to be slow, methodical, and careful about it.
You need to sand out the scratch, but not get into the paint layer. I was disappointed that the kit only came with one small sander pad. Definitely needed another, if not 3 of them. 2) Buff with compound.
My main complaint with this step was that the compound comes in a packet (like you’d get for salad dressing), so there’s no way to seal the unused portion. Also, it’s a bit messy when your using the drill buffer, even if you spread it before you start spinning the drill.
I had a lot of cleanup to do afterwards. Otherwise, it seemed to work fine. 3) Buff with polish layer. Exact same complaints here. No way to seal unused portion. Makes a bit of a mess. It did restore the shine, which I was a bit worried about after the step 1 sanding.
Overall, it mostly worked. The shallow scratches are gone. Shine is back. The deeper scratches are still visible, although less visible than before. Perhaps if I was braver, I would have sanded the larger scratches down more.
Or maybe if I had more than the single tiny sander that felt like it ran out of steam before I had attacked all of the trunk scratches. Not sure it was worth the money and effort though. Perhaps I was over ambitious looking for a magic bullet solution.
Amazing kit and very easy to use. I repair furniture and wood flooring. You would be amazed at how well one of these kits works to remove scratches from manufactured flooring and clear coat finishes on furniture.
Add a battery powered drill to the mix and the work becomes a breeze.
Driving on the freeway a truck in the lane right to me hit something, like a piece of tire or plastic or some sort of other car part debris. The truck’s rear wheels threw the piece up to the left and smacked it to the right side of my car.
Scratched the right rear fender (metal) for about 5 inches with black paint transfer (my car is white pearl). This thing took it out. Period. Followed the instructions, sanded it with the provided pad, then polished then buffed.
Looks like new. I became so excited that I went around the car checking for all kind of scratches just to fix them. Well worth it. You must have a drill or a drill driver and you must know how to handle it because it wiggles.

I’ve tried numerous other paint scratch/swirl removers and this one out does them all. by far. I was a bit nervous abt using my rotating buffer for fear of pressing too hard and making things worse. So, I put some on a microfiber towel, did circular, parallel.
Cross, and diagonal by hand. Wow. my black paint showing swirls and fine scratches came out making my hood look like new. With a second clean microfiber towel, I easily removed the haze and it buffed out wo any issues.
I’m SO pleased. my 1980 Datsun 280ZX looks like it did 42 years ago on the showroom floor. In a couple of spots I had to do it twice, but no problem and no swirls of correction. Black paint has a way of really showing the fine scratches and swirls.
This product is both gentle, yet effective at the task at hand. So, here is ‘my’ ten star rating. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. Nice job Chem. Guys.
Soft and creamy paste instantly shines new life and color into dull faded finishes. Quickly and safely removes oxidized pigment, heavy road film, dirt and stains. Goes on smoothly and easily, contains no harsh abrasives.
Cleans all painted metal, chrome and porcelain surfaces. Size: 10 Oz White polishing compound Pre-softened formula Restores lightly oxidized, faded finishes to a like-new appearance Safe for all car finishes, painted metal & chrome Non-scratching ingredients are safe for all car finishes.
I tried rubbing the scratches on my truck (metallic blue) and product did not remove them. It does remove dirt and grit nicely. Good for polishing. Had to take truck to professional car detailer to remove scratches.
What I like is how easy and quick this works for removing light scuffs and those finger nail lines behind the door handles that show up on light color vehicles. I have also used this on garden solar panel lights.
Comes in a nice squeeze bottle which I prefer a lot more than the plastic jar.
Removes heavy scratches and abrasions from most acrylic surfaces. Use when damage is too severe to be restored with Novus No. 2 polish. Requires use of Novus No. 2 for final finishing. Not recommended for use on coated plastics Shake well.
Test in an inconspicuous area. Apply Novus No. 3 liberally. Using a clean, soft cloth, polish with a firm back-and-forth motion at right angles to the scratches. Keep the cloth saturated with polish at all times.
Continue polishing until only fine scratches remain. Using cloth, remove all remaining polish, this is very important! Using a clean cloth, apply Novus No. 2 in a circular motion uniformly to entire surface.
This is a good product that will shine plastics well, but it will not get rid of deep scratches, which is what should logically be expected. If you use this product with a high RPM buffer, your chances of removing deep scratches is improved, but bear in mind that in order to buff out a deep scratch, you must remove a depth of plastic equal to the depth of the scratch, which may cause irregularities in the surface.
Still, it will make a worn plastic item look more pleasing even if deep scratches remain. I used it on a turntable dust cover.
This product is basically like sandpaper for plastics. Each numbered bottle is like a different grit of sandpaper, number 3 is like coase sandpaper, start here for heavy scratches. Move to number 2 to for finer scratches, finish with number 1 to buff out the finest scratches.
A pre-softened paste that instantly shines new life and color into dull faded finishes. Quickly and safely removes oxidized pigment, heavy road film, dirt and stains. Goes on smoothly, contains no harsh abrasives.
Cleans all painted metal, chrome and porcelain surfaces.
I am currently using this to final polish musical instrument finishes. After a last coast of varnish is applied and then dried, I use this to give it a smooth professional finish. It’s a very good product and with a little bit of moisture on a cloth I can clean up whatever remaining residue is left over.
Works great for polishing after a fine sanding , which is what I purchased for , and it did a fantastic job on a guitar I’m building. Would recommend for professionals but safe enough for beginners like myself.

After using Meguiars and 3m professional compounds for over 20 years I came across a sale on this stuff. The stuff is truly amazing and knocks out 1500 grit scratches to Mirror perfection with a wool pad in no time.
Finish up with a black foam pad and mothers professional foam pad polish to remove any swirl marks and you are done. My friend who has been a Painter for over 30 years used it once and threw out all of his old compounds because he was impressed with the results and time savings.
Used 3M cutting compound for P1200 grit scratches and a wool pad, had to lean on it to get so so results even though I sanded down to 2000 grit. Bought this stuff to see if the reviews were for real and this product works as advertised, I will never anything else.
Polishing marring and fine scratches out of glass surfaces is a slow and difficult process, but using 3M Glass Polishing Compound can make the job a little bit easier. When used with a dual action or rotary machine polisher, it not only cuts well, but also breaks down quickly to leave a high clarity finish that requires no further refinement.
This makes the compound easy to use and requires almost no clean-up. 3M Glass Polishing Compound comprises a precision-milled cerium oxide-based micro-abrasive paste that permanently removes defects such as swirl marks, fine scratches and water spots from exterior glass surfaces.
The use of cerium-oxide offers distinct advantages in terms of finish quality and work time and avoids the use of wax or silicone chemicals that can be less user friendly. It also contains no chemical cleaners, fillers or glazing oils, which makes it great for both casual and professional users.
This high-efficiency compound requires only 2-4 drops for every square foot of glass surface area, and requires little or no cleanup. The 3M Glass Polishing Compound gives you a professional looking finish without the need for professional level expertise.
Chemical Guys have really pulled it out of the bag with this one step high gloss polish – an exceptional shine all with just a one step process! So my neighbors dog jumped on my car and this is a big husky. When I got outhi noticed two big scratch marks. I also get hit often with grocery carts because people just seem not to care anymore. Got a few scratches from those too.
So when I clean my car I go all out. First prep it with tar and bug remover, let that sit a bit. The powerwash with turtle wax car wash. Then I get out the brush and scrub. This helps see all the scratches, imperfections etc.
I went around and used the renew and restore scratch remover and noticed a big difference with almost all of the scratches. I then went and waxed the car with my power waxer. Then I do the wheels and all the turtle wax products make my car look brand new.
It’s almost ten years old but I love my car and I still get so many compliments on how great it looks.
A family member backed out of the garage and scraped the rear wheel well of a white X3 BMW. I looked at this for months and finally decided to do something about it, not expecting any success. I used a Festool Rotex 90 tool* with a foam pad, and the results were amazing.
In five minutes the rash was gone completely! I honestly do not know how this was possible, but it worked like a charm, and I was so impressed I am thinking about opening a scratch removal business ;-).
This Turtle Wax Scratch Repair and Renew product restored my faith in automotive products that you see on shelves at the auto parts store and wonder if they are just money sinks. If you have a similar situation with your car, you should give this a try before you take it in for an estimate.
I could eliminate the need for repair or reduce your repair estimate. *you could use a drill with a foam disc attachment or use elbow grease.
Looks like wax out of the bottle. but not so. This has just enough of a fine abrasive to remove scratches caused by sideswiping bendable traffic lane delinerator poles. I used a microfiber cloth by hand vs.
the orbitable buffer. Very little pressure and work required to return to “like new” condition. I am trying it next on black plastic arount the rear hatch, where it looks like chemical spots have affected the buffed finish.
Turtle Wax is the number one selling brand of car care products in the world with sales in 90 countries. Founded more than 60 years ago in Chicago, the company is recognized for manufacturing appearance and performance car care products for the retail consumer market and the commercial car care and professional detailing industries.
Cuts through oxidized surfaces to diminishes scratches, blemishes and car paint stains. Intended to clean dull and badly weathered vehicle finishes. Do not apply in direct sunlight. After using, follow up with Turtle Wax Super Hard Shell Wax to seal the paint finish, add a protective layer and maintain a shiny, reflective surface.
A great way to keep your vehicle’s auto body looking shiny and new while adding a necessary layer of protection.
Wash and dry car. Apply with dampened cheesecloth over small area. Rub with back and forth movement. Remove excess cleaner before it dries and finish by buffing lightly with a clean cloth. Avoid application in hot sun.
Contains powerful abrasives which may remove paint if rubbed too forcefully. Test first in an inconspicuous area.

I went to school for automotive collision repair for 4 years learning about painting, repair of totaled cars, and detailing cars till they are new. This stuff is the real deal, but you need to follow the instructions and maybe even look up how to use certain techniques on YouTube for the best options.
Definitely worth the buy if you have the time to do it right. If you don’t… it’ll look like it’s a terrible product. This would be user error not product issues!.
For a while I’ve had a white haze start to appear across the roof above the windscreen and given the cars black finish it has becoming a lot more obvious. I’ve always been concered about damaging the clear coat attempting to restore the finish and tried plenty of other branded products but none have been as effective as this TW Rubbing Compound which I bought today.
It took a bit of elbow grease to get the job done but really did work and the white haze has completely gone, following a polish I couldn’t be happier with the outcome.
This product is excellent for in between washes. It gives a beautiful shine like you just got your car detailed. I’ve been using it for 10+ plus years, many cars, and I’m glad they have the product consistent.
Especially love using on my convertible, when I want to wash the car but not the soft top. I don’t think the price has changed much in 10 years either.

I supposed this Meguiar’s liquid rubbing compound works well enough, but it could be somewhat more abrasive in my opinion. And it could have a higher top temperature for use. It dries quite quickly and means you have to do smaller patches of work because it is difficult to remove if it dries.
I was using it in my garage and although it was shady, it was still 100+ degrees outside and that was in excess of the recommended high temp for good use. And, when I worked with a fan on me it was even worse for drying too quickly.
But, having said that, it actually did a good job on my truck. I would guess it was the first time the truck had been compounded, polished and waxed in its whole 10 years of life. It just took too long to get those good results.
I bought the truck about three years ago and have put only 11,000 miles on it, so I am sure it has had zero TLC on the paint job until now. I used Meguiar’s Polish and Meguiar’s best liquid wax on the paint and it really cleaned up nicely.
I will just have to wax it for the next five year or so to keep it looking nice. Maybe the Ultimate Compound will develop some grit over the next few years???.
My day job used to be buffing cars for the crash industry, If there’s a product out there, I’ve more then likely used it before in 20 litre drums, polish by hand or by machine. This product has not enough abrasive capability to adequately cut, it dries too fast, leaves a residue that requires endless buffing and the end result is not worth the time, effort or frankly, the cost of the product.
I went to purchase a good old Kitten polish but Repco were out of stock and recommended this instead. 3 X the price, 3 X the work and 1/3rd the result. I now need to do the job again, with another brand.
Meguiars Clear Coat Safe Rubbing Compound is a scratch remover and paint cleaner that removes oxidation, stains, scratches and other below-surface defects while reviving dull and neglected surfaces. This formulas unique abrasives produce a clear finish and clean surface without scouring, scratching or hazing like traditional compounds.
Clear coat safe compound is safe and effective on all glossy paints and clear coats (not for use on flat, matte or satin finishes). For hand application only.
I used this with their foam applicator pads(link below). Shake the bottle then just apply to the pad, and scrub back and forth against the the scratched area for a good 10 seconds really fast. Scrub longer for the older scratches.
Then clean with a cotton fiber towel or with another unused pad. If scratches are too deep, itll just be less noticeable. It also works with cleaning your headlights. forgot to take before pics for the headlights so not posting any pics for that.
If you notice in the after pic, it also got a bit shinier after the rubbing compound. Update: 09/30/2019 Uploaded before and after pics of my headlight Meguiar’s W0004 Supreme Shine 4″ Foam Applicator Pads, 4 Pack https://www.
Home Essentials Direct. com/dp/B002J8379C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ta5pDbE50EAAA.
I hadn’t even realized how dull my finish was until I used this to try and remove stains below every seal on my 2010 Wrangler, not only did it remove all of those but changed the paint back to normal as well so I did the whole Jeep, you do need to rub it out so dont just wipe it on and off, really rub it and it will work great.
There is a black bottle also that seems to do the exact same thing I used on my 08 ram so use that if this is unavailable. Also, when your all done fixing the paint and buffing it out, go ahead and use this brand wax to really polish it and seal it.
I’m sure any wax would probably work, but I was already buying this brand.
I had a very noticeable oxidation stain on my car’s black paint job from bird droppings and was upset that I would have to shell out a lot of money to a body shop to sand it and repaint it. I thought I’d search for do-it-yourself solutions first and came across Meguiar’s Rubbing Compound.
I was very skeptical that a) this would further damage my car’s paint and b) it wouldn’t remove the deep stain. However, after applying with Meguiar’s soft foam applicator pads (also highly recommended for this purpose), I was surprised to find that not only did this not harm the paint job in any way, it drastically reduced the appearance of the oxidation.
While it did not completely remove it, it reduced the oxidation to an acceptable level to where taking it to a body shop would be a waste of money. I also recommend purchasing the Meguiar’s polishing compound with this as well as the two create a really nice 1-2 combo to removing and buffing any stains or scratches.
You can use this on your car’s paint with confidence, it works!.
The 3M Auto Advanced Rubbing Compound is a solution that quickly removes scratches, swirl marks, oxidation and water spots from the surface of your vehicle. The compound of the liquid means that it leaves behind no marks and is completely safe for use on enamel and lacquer paint finishes.
3M Heavy Oxidation Remover provides a clear coat that makes your auto body look glossy and new again. Being both a cleaner and a smoothing solution, this product is dual-purpose. The compounding solution removes any scratch patterns left behind from sanding your car.
Fine scratches will also be removed with the gel coat of the 3M Auto Advanced Rubbing Compound. As well as removing scratches left behind from sanding, the formula has been developed to be fast acting, meaning that compounding time has been slashed so that restoration projects are easier and quicker than ever.
This did a very good job restoring my headlights to near new condition. Nothing else was used other than this rubbing compound applied with a lint free cloth and a little elbow grease. If you want an even better result you may wish to use various sandpaper grits first (see videos on Youtube) and then use this rubbing compound.
It probably took 10 minutes per headlight to restore them.
This product is at times underated because folks do not know how to use it properly, or let alone bother to do some research on the product and how to apply it. This is a professional grade product,if not used correctly you could damage your paint.
When using this product tape half inch above and below the scratch area, this will minimize hazing and swirls. Use with fine coned drill polishing pad, apply a small dap on tip and work it into the scratch with minimal pressure.
Wipe off and keep reapplying until the scratch is gone. DO NOT LET THE COMPOUND DRY AS IT WILL BECOME MORE ABBRASIVE. If used properly you can get out most scratches with no problem. Then use a 3M Imperial Glaze to restore the shine or Mcguires ultimate polish.
Bought this to clean up a hazed over headlight assembly. After about 5 minutes of rubbing this product in a circular motion on the headlight, it was clear as new. This was EXTREMELY easier than the other suggested products and methods I saw on internet videos.

I’ve got a 2016 VW Golf and noticed I had a couple of big scratches down one side – these scratches had probably come from a hedge. I did the usual research and found this had good reviews. Yes perfect – works a treat.
I didn’t have to rub too much and it removed most of my scratches. I was so impressed I went over the whole car. The wax resin brings up a wonderful shine. However, like most reviews say ‘if you feel the scratch with your finger nail, then it’s too deep for this to work’.
For superficial scratches, I definitely recommend this!.
I bought this about a month ago and have used it on a black metallic and blue metallic colours. I was trying to remove light surface lines, probably caused by growth from roadside (hedge), which were really only noticeable when cars were newly washed.
The treatment was easy to use but I had to apply the restorer three or four times before I was happy with it. It did not work on deeper small damaged areas. It is good to have the polish with the pack, and also the applicator and duster.
Overall reasonably happy. Possibly expected more given the reviews I had read and the Which Best Buy recommendation.
Waited several months in order to buy this as was out of stock everywhere, even with the manufacturer. Not sure why but reason I was after it was based on a Which? review which made it a ‘Best Buy’ with the summary comments: This all-in-one car scratch remover kit produced amazing results.
It made the shallow scratches on our car door vanish from sight after the first use. Having finally got to use it I can attest to that! Great product at a very good price.
I bought this product because my headlights were completely clouded over. Not having the money to have them redone the young man at the store suggested I might try this. I had already tried another rubbing compound that didnt really help.
I applied Mcguires compound and with little effort I was amazed at how well it worked! One of my headlights was worse than the other and took more than one application. Im giving Mcguires clear coat rubbing compound 5 stars.
I give Autozone 5 plus Stars. Im a single Senior and the associates there are always a BIG TRUSTING HELP.
Purchased our car and noticed shallow scratches on passenger side. Most likely the previous owner parked next to bushes and didnt care about the scratches. We bought this compound along with buffer pads that attached to our drill.
After we cleaned car, applied this compound and buffed the scratches came out! We will need to reapply after the compound washes away after a few more car washes but its easy to apply so we dont mind.
This will not work for Keyed scratches or anything too deep.

Turtle Wax Premium Grade Polishing Compound goes easy on your clear coat with a gentle touch to remove light scratches, swirls, spiderwebbing, oxidation, stains and fading. For lighter-duty jobs, it’s the ideal, one-step solution for car scratch repair.
This polishing compound contains zero fillers, waxes or silicones. The beautiful gloss you’ll see when you’re done will be your actual paint and clear coat, not the result of some masking agent. Even better, this car scratch remover creates very little dusting and no white residue on the finish of your car or truck.
Right up there with wax. My truck has something stuck to the horizontal surfaces, looks like orange fibers, but it was only coming off with wet baking soda and a fingernail. Bought this to speed up the process and save my nails, but no matter how hard and long I rubbed, the grunge didn’t come off.
This polish did better than I expected. The paint on the hood, roof and trunk of my 05 Nissan is shot! the owner before me only ran it thru the car wash in the yrs she had it. I have an electric hand buffer I got for this car.
I put a few drops of this polish on the polishing pad as directed and it seemed to add a little shine to the paint that wasn’t there before. i followed this with a spray on coat of ceramic wax. For the price it seemed to do a good job!.
I bought this product to use on my 06 mustang. I applied both the Renex RX rubbing compound and the Renew RX polishing wax per directions. I noticed scratches and a dull finish on my factory rear spoiler.
I called turtlewax to remedy this problem. I mailed out a claim form, pictures of damages, 2 estimates for repair, and the both products for “lab analysis”. After 2 weeks Turtlewax said I was negligent on applying their product on my vehicle.
I was suppose to apply a small area to all areas of the car to test compatibility. Also, because my factory spoiler was made out of plastic polymers, that is why it was ruined. I told them they need to put a warning label on their product explaining the incompatibility with plastics.
Turtlewax told me that’s why I should have tested it out on all areas of the car. Total nonsense!! They reimbursed me for the price I paid for the product and the shipping charge. Now I’m left with over $500 worth of damages from using their product.
G3 Scratch Remover uses a blend of Engineered Diminishing Abrasives to gently and effectively remove unsightly scratches, leaving you with a flawless showroom finish. The Engineered Diminishing Abrasive particles in G3 Scratch Remover paste break down consistently and reduce in size as you remove the scratch or scuff, finally turning into a smooth wax polishing fluid.
This means it won’t harm your bodywork. To use, lightly dampen and apply the scratch remover to pad, then using a straight back and forth motion, evenly apply to the bodywork. Comes in a 150ml paste.
G3 products from Farécla are the No. 1 choice for body shops around the world. Technically advanced formulas developed alongside paint and lacquer manufacturers make them safe and effective for all paint types.
Given the price, this stuff is awesome! Someone had massively scraped my side panel and I did some research on products to use as the scratches didn’t feel too deep. Went for G3 and I’m impressed. You need a lot (A LOT) of elbow grease, but eventually you’ll get light scratches out.
It’s not a miracle, as shining a torch/bright sunlight on it will show up the marks. For a quick and easy fix, it’s worth the effort.
So I like to read reviews before I buy. And there are a fair few negative reviews, but most of those people are complaining about how this product didn’t remove key scratches or deep scratches. ! No scratch remover can remove a scratch so deep its gone through your paintwork.
The paint itself is deeply damaged and would need to be replaced with a respray. An abrasive past like this one does not and can not put paint back where it does not exist! Nor can any other paste or cutting liquid.
! What this product can do and I have been impressed with it’s ability to do, is remove a lot of the fine, superficial scratches that show and stand out when the light hits them. With a bit of elbow grease, a few hours of scrubbing and about half a tube later, I managed to give my 12 year old BMW such a good clean up my friends thought the car looked like it had been resprayed.
Yes, there are still some deep scratches here and there, but overall the car looks a lot better free of a lot of the surface swirls and fine lines. I finished off by waxing the car, to add a layer of temporary protection and my 12 year old BMW almost looks showroom fresh again.
to put it simply this is the worst product I have ever used in my life. It is not fit for purpose and how it is still being manufactured is beyond me. It did not remove even the smallest of scratches and when I trie to “give it some elbow grease” as some reviews suggest, it completely discoloured and ruined the paint on a big patch where the scratch remained!! I have since payed a significant sum to have my paintwork fully restored and enhanced.
Luckily this got my paintwork back to 90% new without the need for a respray. The guy who carried out the work laughed and shook his head when I told him what I had used to try and get out the scratches.
He said if I had gone at it for another 5 mins it would have been unrepairable and would have needed a respray. DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT, IT DOES NOTHING BUT DAMAGE THE PAINTWORK!!!.

I bought an old Chevy Suburban just to move my boat from dry storage at Folsom Lake and launch it and then put the boat back. After owning it for a few years and getting to retire I decided to take it on as a project.
The existing white Chevy paint was shot. So I decided to go for a antique look and just buff that old pain out and Lee and show some metal. I’m really liking how it’s turning out. Very happy with the rubbing compound.
Bought this because I couldn’t find my box o compounds. My van was long overdue for a thorough paint refresh. I used a slightly more aggressive liquid compound on the very oxidized paint, then this, then a cleaning glaze then a few coats of carnuba and my van looks like new.
This compound is very effective for getting the grime and leaving nothing but shine.
There are a few different ways that you can go about removing scratches from cars. You can either use a compound or a polish. If you use a compound, you will need to apply it to the scratch and then buff it out.
This will remove the scratch and leave the area smooth. If you use a polish, you will need to apply it to the scratch and then buff it out. This will remove the scratch and leave the area shiny.
