Best Classic Books For Kids (2024 Updated)

We, as a family, were having a big outside meet-up, two weeks ago. I chose this for one of my granddaughters, aged 11. She is half-way through it and says that it is very absorbing. Can’t fault the price at £3.

Together with one of The Works’appropriately titled notebooks at £2, all 5 of the “lovelies”; aged from 10-15, got a little reunion present, after 5 months of not seeing them. Excellent.

This book took me completely by surprise when it arrived. it is stunningly beautiful;the cover is so lovely,almost padded it is so substantial and the book itself is so beautifully illustrated it is going to be just loved by my niece at Christmas.

I highly recommend this to anyone at such great value and am considering re-purchasing for myself. (And I’m definitely no youngster!). It is,however,a classic story and this version just makes it even lovelier for all ages and new young readers will enjoy the discovery of wonderful story.

Bought for my grandaughter as she was reading this for homework and she wanted to work between computer screen and a printed copy which she was able to do. A lovely old favourite in my eyes although I think the youngsters now don’t find the language quite so easy.

This old favourite provided lots of fun with our grandchildren Nicely presented and easy to sing and see the creatures being swallowed in turn. I hadn’t realised it was a board book but that was my fault, the description was clear enough.

I had this when I was little (over 40 years ago) and I was thrilled to find it hadn’t changed at all (although I had the paperback one when I was small and this is the board book version).

Great book, Arrived as described. Delivery arrived before the date which was great. Would highly recommend this company.

This version of the book is on thick cardboard pages so babies cannot bend or tear them. (Good idea). But the story is also much less verbose so as not to be too many words for babies to comprehend. I would like to have understood this before purchase, for I was actually looking for the FULL version.

This book is a timeless classic touching story about a boy and his special toy bunny. Made me cry in the middle but has a happy ending. The book is well made and very detailed illustrations.

Great quality. The hard cover pages make it a great keepsake item for my grandson that just turned two. Very satisfied with this item.

A classic story, with lovely illustrations and a sweet ending. We all want to feel wanted and loved and Corduroy is no different. My little ones love this story, as I did when I was a child.

Cutest book ever with such a sweet little story and lovely illustrations. I bought two copies – one for a friend. Am sure our grandchildren will love it and if they don’t – we do!

in my mind a little overpriced. But it did what I wanted it to. It brought back special memories for both my daughters as I had read this little bears adventure relentlessly throughout their childhood.

( complete with voice characterisations , purely for effect,) They were both delighted with the books, So , I suppose the looks on both their faces suggests that price isn’t everything. A wonderful ,little book that I know they will read and pass on to their children in future years.

So excited to see this set of 10 living lights Berenstain Bears books for such a great price. It is just what I was looking for to read biblically based stories to my grandchildren. The illustrations are bright and adorable on every page as always.

Will look for more books in this series.

My children and I love these books! The books are engaging, hold their attention, and teach a lesson. I would recommend to anyone who has children in their lives 100%.

Little Pilgrim’s Progress is a rewritten illustrated version of Pilgrim’s Progress and Christiana for kids. In this version Christian is a Little Pilgrim who is close friends with a little girl named Christiana who has several little siblings.

Christian goes out on his pilgrimage first and meets with various characters similar to the original Pilgrim’s Progress though some of them have been changed to be boys instead of men. Christiana goes on her pilgrimage later on in the book with her siblings where they also encounter Christian’s father who has become a Christian and is also journeying to the Celestial City.

There are two things that I had trouble with regarding this book and that is that first of all Christian’s mother who had gone to the Celestial City before him is focused upon too much she is portrayed as if she is watching and possibly even helping him on his pilgrimage.

Speaking of Christian’s mother one character tells him you will find her again little ChristianÖAnd do you know that she often very near to you? You cannot see her but she can see you. It took away some of the focus that should belong to God alone as Helper and Protector.

We don’t want children looking to their dead relatives for help they should rely upon God! And then when Christian arrives in the Celestial city and meets his mother he seems more focused upon her than upon the King: ‘Does the King live there?’ whispered Christian to his mother for his hand was still clasped in hers.

‘Yes ‘ she replied ‘and when you have knelt before Him and seen His glory you will be perfectly happy forever. ‘ ‘I am happy now ‘ said little Christian ‘because I have found you and you love me. ‘ ‘Ah yes ‘ she answered ‘but the love the King is far greater than mine.

‘ That just seemed very oddÖinstead of assuming that Christian had learned to love the King above everyone else (especially now that he is in ‘Heaven’ he loves his mother seemingly above everybody else and has a desire to be with her more than with the King.

It almost makes it seem as though Christian became a ‘Christian’ only because he wanted to be with his mother! This would be something to talk to children about if they read this book or you read it to them.

Secondly I thought that many of the theological dialogues were too dumbed down and too much was cut out that could have been rendered into language understandable by children such as the various Scripture quotations that are cited in the original Pilgrim’s Progress.

I could have understood why the book was written the way it was if the book were for very little children but the back cover says that it is for 8-12 year olds. Also I found it odd that though many of the dialogues were very watered down many of the difficult names were left unchanged such as Diffidence By-Ends and Discretion.

Why weren’t those simplified as well? But overall I liked the book. Aside from moments like what I mentioned above most of Christian’s focus does seem to be on seeing the King. I did very much like the change of the Monster Apollyon’s name to a monster called ‘Self’.

Which results in some interesting dialogue like Christian saying to Self after Self tries to woo him The King loves me better than you do and I would rather live with Him. And of course Self gets angry with Christian and declares that Christian is his own servant not the King’s and Self and Christian end up in a big fight with each other.

All in all it is an interesting read that kept my attention throughout even when Christiana began her journey and travelled through many of the same places Christian did. There are many interesting concepts to discuss with children and as I said above it would be good to talk to children about the flaws of the book as well.

I have been reading this book to our five kids. Our 6, 10, and 12 year olds all really enjoy this book. Even though the chapters are all very short (like 2 pages each), it does not really keep the attention of our 4 and 5 year olds.

Some of the names of the characters (which mirror their character traits or jobs) are kind of old fashioned in their terminology, so we do stop periodically to explain the meaning of these words. Overall, though, we are really enjoying reading the book together.

Our three oldest kids are all following the Christian symbolism quite well, and even our younger two are getting the big ideas (like the King is God, the Wicked Prince is Satan, etc). My ten year old son likes this book so much that he begs me to keep reading when I finish our allotted chapters for the day.

I never read the original (that I can remember), but this version seems very well written and easy to understand for the most part.

This has been one of our favorite books for years. This version has great illustrations and is an easy-to-follow version of Bunyan’s classic, poignant allegory. We highly recommend this book for readers 7 and up.

There are many moral lessons throughout that all will appreciate.

I was so excited to see this kid’s book version of one of my favorite childhood movies. Some of the characters look very much resemble their movie versions, and some have noticeably changed (like Buzz, who’s lost weight and seems less evil, more cheerful and childish).

The narration is well done and I can see the attention to detail in the illustrations. Favorite scenes from the movie are easy to recognize. The book’s pages are matte and very smooth. Perfect holiday book for the next generation.

This book was better than I expected. It was larger and really well done. The book follows the movie with enough pictures and text. I actually bought this for an adult who collects Home Alone memorabilia.

This will now be set out at Christmas as a decoration but it would be great for a child as well.

My grandson loves these movies and he asked for a book for Christmas. He was so excited to get this book and the pictures are just like the movie. He loves the book!!!

Roald Dahl’s formula for mixing the normal with the unexpected appeals to me. It inspires the imagination. Not for children who are taught to believe everything that they read – it is fiction! Super illustrations by Quentin Blake.

This book was heartily recommended to me by a nine-year-old and her mum, so I looked forward to reading it. However, I found the main character, Matilda, to be an unsympathetic and unpleasant character.

I found her sly, deceptive, mean and lacking emotion. Her tricks on the adults around her were mean-spirited and generally only enacted for revenge. The adults were not taught a lesson. They were just tormented for her private satisfaction.

The one nice adult was a weak doormat. At the end of the book – spoiler alert – when her family leaves for places unknown, Matilda’s brother waves good-bye. There is no mention or illustration of Matilda waving back or caring one jot.

She seems to have viewed permanent separation from her family with utter equanimity. I expected to find this book funny and a little rebellious. I did not.

I genuinely really loved this book to the point where I can’t stop re-reading it. The book is basically all about this girl named Matilda who is the most spectacular child you can come across in you entire life.

Sadly, this prodigy of a child is not recognized by her very obnoxious parents. They actually do not encourage her to read books, instead they want her to waste her time watching TV. There are many things I love about this book, now I don’t know about you but I find the character Matilda very inspiring even though she is fictional.

But there is something that maybe some people may not enjoy which is the fact that the book takes a long time to read. In my opinion anyone over the age of nine can read this book. This has been and always will be one of the top 5 books I’ve ever read.

Great way to introduce the kids to the classics!

This edition of Winnie the Pooh is small, about 5 and a half inches by 7 and three/fourth inches, making it easy to hold and comfortable to read. The pages are cut unevenly for a classic look, the cover is stamped with a very cute, gold-colored leaf print of Christopher Robin and Pooh Bear, and the font of the actual text is classy and easy on the eyes.

The illustrations are in black and white, as to resemble the original 1926 edition first published in the United States. A highly affordable treasure for any fan of Winnie the Pooh or lovers of whimsy.

I bought this for my oldest daughter who has been in love with Winnie the Pooh since she was a little girl she is now in her 40s. This book is beautifully made I could not have made a better choice.

I know this book was written primarily for children, but I found it somewhat boring. Not nearly as entertaining as the OZ books. Pooh-Pooh to Winnie.

My 5 year old is obsessed with the Nightmare before Christmas, so I decided to preorder this. He was so excited when we finally received it. It’s now a regular read for us. If you love Golden Books and TNBC, this book is for you!.

What a cute little book! I grew up reading these books so I always buy them for my daughter when I can! I would recommend this book to others as well as buy it again for myself! My daughter loves this book.

If you liked either film, you’ll love the book! This hardback edition is built to be handed down for generations. The story is wonderful. The characters are identifiable and endearing. The illustrations are delightful.

An excellent addition to our library.

This is such a great story! Ive been reading it to my grandchildren and I enjoy it as much as they do. It is a chapter book for my second and third graders to read that keeps them interested with all of the oddities like the four grandparents all in the same bed and the way the children act in the crazy chocolate factory.

Aw this book was good! I read it to my daughter! I read a chapter to her each night until we finished the book. She loves it! Now I have to show her the movie! We got this book for free from her school! She is 4 so I had to read to her because she is still learning to read!.

Same version of stories I read to my own children. Now read to my 34 grandchildren. Deja vu !

I wish it had a few more pictures since it’s fairy tales. Also, some of the stories are a little more worry than necessary, especially when trying to keep a toddlers attention.

These little books are great. The books are easy for the little ones to handle. The board pages are the best they do not tear. The illustrations are so colorful. The short stories are just the right length for the little ones attention span.

The boxed case has all the books right at your fingertips. The handle makes it easy to carry around.

The Ultimate in recycling. This book was the original 1993 Authorized Edition. The book is second hand but beautifully looked after. The story of Peter Rabbit is a wonderful story for children to learn about the grave consequences of misbehaving, and that home is a safe place to be.

My 3. 5 year old granddaughter was captivated.

Purchased this book for our Great Grandbaby [GG] due end of July. We want our “GG” to have all the special, classic books we know and love.

This is a great collection of stories at an incredible price! I agree with reviews that I have seen elsewhere that the photos are small/compressed compared to the individual books themselves, but for our family, we don’t really notice as we’re reading the stories.

For the stories that I am familiar with, the author seems to have done an excellent job at including as much as they possibly could into a book that you are still able to hold in one hand. Our reading times are a “gather in close” time, so the smaller version of the pictures really do not take away any magic from story time.

We also love the variety of stories presented, as well as the ability to take a whole library of books on the road with ease!.

For bilingual couple this book is an investment for you child or children to learn new language. 3 books in one is a steal, there’s French-English-Spanish version for parents who speak French fluently and Spanish.

This book is translated in so many different languages and the story is mesmerized. I brought it for my goddaughter and my son. So, parents check out and tell me your point for view regarding the Cat, the Fish and the Waiter.

Book was in great condition as described. Wonderful collection of short stories I loved as a child, with stories for different age ranges, and with various storytelling styles. I would be very shocked if there wasn’t at least a good handful of stories that your child would adore.

My mother’s previous copy was damaged from aging, so I bought her this one as a surprise. She was very touched and happy to look back on the stories.

Do not buy this item it is not as advertised three Of the book titles are missing, Ann of green gables, the secret garden and little women aren’t included. I would not recommend buying this item.

Got these for my granddaughter for Christmas and my 15 year old daughter had her eyes on these so I may get her a set. look a amazing read for a great price. Fingers crossed they get enjoyed for many years.

Nice little book which will be more suitable for younger children. Im looking forward to reading it to my grandson. The print is larger and there are some fun black and white sketches of characters. Its a way of introducing a classic story and hopefully encouraging interest.

I did not know this was an abridged version & may not have bought it if I had. I read complete & unabridged classics even as a child & this is a very precious book that I have returned to even as a teen & as a young adult.

It’s sad to lose any of this great piece of literature lost in an abridged edition. However, the Inga Moore illustrations are so enchanting, engaging & would have delighted Kenneth Graham himself, bringing so vividly & tenderly to life, this irresistible world of Ratty, Mole & Badger.

The artwork is iconic & evokes the best of Shepherd & Rackham & other unforgettable children’s literary illustrators. So this is a book to be treasured& passed onto the next generation, & certainly worth buying, but I have just purchased the complete abridged version to accompany this in my collection, because this is a book that I return to every now & then, as comforting & reassuring as a cup of tea by a warm fire side on a cold winter’s day.

The wonderful stories of Rat and Mole and friends. Perfectly and abundantly illustrated by Robert Ingpen. My son is looking forward to reading this to his own sons. They will be the fourth generation to be swept away to this dream world, unhindered by the modern literary criticism that threatens to destroy the innocence of this story.
