Best Civs For Cultural Victory (2024 Updated)

I started out the Civilization series with Civ 2 on my PC. Have bought several incarnations of this series and have enjoyed most of them. This one is a good one but it does have a few flaws. The Barbarian system could use a few tweeks, they seem way too powerful too early.

Also I have yet to play a world where the other nations are not crowded on top of me. I would like to have some time and room to explore and find stuff, its what made the other earlier games so much fun.

I liked finding a deserted village and then getting something, but now you have no time for that because your neighbor is breathing down your butt. It would be nice to be able to explore and see the world.

Also it seems like every other nation, no matter the difficulty seems to have the ability to build ships way sooner than you. All and all a good game and well worth the price. If this is the last game in the series then I’m cool with that.

I had played Sid’s Civilization when I had my PS3 and really enjoyed it. Once i Got rid of my PS3 this was probably the only game that I had missed playing. Now I have an XBOX 1 and when I saw this was one sale, I jumped to get it, This game is a lot of fun and it really is all about strategy.

Who will you be an ally with and who are you willing to take out if you don’t have your demand met. This game is very long because you literally start from the early era to the newly modern times. I prefer this version rather than the PC version because the control are so much easier.

Again this is is all about strategy and may seem repetitive at times, so I don’t recommend it for a kid as they might get bored easily. Overall very fun game!!.

Many a countless nights were spent playing Civilization Revolution back on the PS3. Those online gaming sessions with friends lasted until dawn. But alas, I’ve grown older and work a “9 to 5”, as do most of my gaming friends.

I’ve enjoyed the game so far. It’s Civilization. on a console. It runs well enough, but isn’t a graphical powerhouse – it looks like it could run on a PS3. The number of “Leaders” is huge (don’t forget to download your bonus civs after installation).

The game is deep, with a pretty steep learning curve. While the tutorial is helpful, true mastery only can come with practice and repeated playthroughs. My complaints about the game are minimal. As i said, the tutorial is helpful, but only scratches the surface of what you can do.

This was an issue with Civ Rev, too. Controls aren’t as intuitive as they could be (switching between units could be made easier). The camera should zoom to your units getting attacked on other civs’ turns, but maybe there’s a setting for it.

One last complaint: This weekend, Civ VI is $20 (physical copy) for the Nintendo Switch, although it released only 1 week prior to the PS4 version. All in all, I’m happy to have Civilization on my PS4.

Great strategy games are few and far between on consoles, and Civ VI scratches that itch quite weill. GIve it a go!.

I think I’ve finally had it with the Civilization series. I haven’t enjoyed one of the games since Civ 3 (which I loved). Ever since they took away the ability to stack troops, the gameplay has become very slow.

Civ 6 is tedious to play, and I found myself not enjoying it the slightest bit. Here are the issues I see: 1) Still no stacking of troops means units take a very long route to someplace to avoid your own troops! This has been going on since Civ 4.

2) Too many barbarians to start. I want the barbarians, but not to be overwhelmed by them, and certainly not for them to have advanced technology I don’t have. 3) The opposing player AI is still lousy.

From the start it’s been lousy. You almost never know why someone dislikes you or denounces you. Others can declare war without provocation and be forgiven very easily. If I attack someone who declared war on me or surprise attacked me several times then somehow I am considered a warmonger.

The warmongering thing needs to be forgotten over time, just like in real life. 4) The pace of building units is painfully slow, and the pace of research is too fast. I would say building needs to be two to three times faster and research needs to be 1/2 to 1/3 the speed.

It shouldn’t be the case that I discover 15 technologies before I can build 10 units. That’s what happens. 5) Roads take forever to build. You can’t automate works to build roads and you have to trade with every city to get a road.

Late in the game you’re still short on roads. 6) The graphics are a huge step backwards. There is an old style hand-drawn map that overlays areas you’ve seen but don’t have any units it. It is super hard to read that map even though you’ve been there, and it stays that way throughout the game! Trees and terrain look cheap.

Everything except the wonders look cheap, and too much time was spent on showing wonders being built instead of making units and terrain look good. I’m saying goodbye to the Civilization franchise. I wanted so much for the games after Civ 3 to be even better, but they got worse.

I wanted to waste my time on these games, but instead I wasted my money. They had three chances to make it good and they failed on all three of them. Sorry Sid, I’m out.

I have no complaints about this game, and find it works great on console. The price was a deterrent at first, but at $30, it’s great. I was enjoying it as it but checked for the add-on content everyone raved about and it’s under $40 for both expansions.

I downloaded those, and then it looked like there was even more in the game (not on PS Store). I clicked for more info, and it auto downloaded the newest add-ons for free (“Free” since I’d already paid for the previous add-ons).

So, as Day 1 release at $59. 99 and then another $50 of add-ons, I can see the critique for sure, but as it stands today, I think this game is worth it. For those who have played Civ, you get your money’s worth.

I have done two games so far, and the first one was honesly 14 hours, and that was just skimming the surface. There are like 30+ leaders, and tons of map variabilty. I will also agree that the game not easy.

I have only played on the easiest for the first matches, and it has been challenging. But at the end of the day, this works great on console and I have zero complaints.

Chancellor Williams, compiled a treasure-trove of liberating and historical events of the “Blacks. ” Some events he wrote about our history, was uplifting , and some was sad. Furthermore, he proved through laid out facts that, Africa was the birthplace of humankind, spiritually, and civilization.

Finally, he also describes how we went from being on top, to the bottom in the human family, but submits a detailed plan to climb back to the top. starting with unity.

i rate this book five star because the author provides the answers to many of the questions i have always had about the history of the Black race. Mainly, why the White race has gone thruough great lenghts to cover up and distort the to the true history of the Black rece.

I am thoroughly enjoying this book. The perspective is very interesting and well documented.

We’ve been waiting for this resource forever. Imagine — history taught from a Catholic perspective that you can pop into your car’s CD player and listen to for hours. It never gets tedious and even though we have six kids, they are completely silent when the Story of Civilization is playing.

They’ve listened to this one so many times now that they repeat passages from it from memory. The stories interspersed throughout are excellent and help young listeners retain important facts, events and dates.

If you’re not using the Story of Civilization for your kids (ages 6 to 16), you’re missing out!.

Our family loves this audiobook set! It is the one form of entertainment that all my kids (ages 5, 7, 9) can agree on to listen to in the car, and I’m learning historical facts that I never learned (or completely forgot) when I was in school.

It’s the perfect mixture of factual information, historical dramatization, music, and sound effects. Valuable tool for homeschool or for enriching entertainment!.

I ordered The Story of Civilization: The Ancient World (dramatized audiobook) because my children enjoy listening to audiobooks, and I thought this would be a fun way to learn history. We have really enjoyed listening to it, and plan to order others in the series.

I think this series of audiobooks will be a wonderful supplement to help my children better understand history in a fun, exciting way.

This is probably the best book on ancient Rome I have ever read. I have a dozens of books but author Mary Beard has an uncanny knack of discovering the true stories behind the myths. I highly recommend this book for any student of Rome.

Once again, Mary Beard entertains us with her indepth coverage of Roman history. Mary is outstanding in her field, and her expertise, and humourse side shine through when telling us the raw facts of roman life.

It is not always the luxury and glamour that we imagine. Mary cleverly peels back the layers one year at a time to make sense of the complexities of patchy history and roman life. This is Mary at her finest.

A wonderful book, so very interesting and hard to put up.

So far……I’m still reading this one! Really enjoying this book, I’m a big fan of Mary Beards work. This is a book that could be utilised at school. Impressed, would recommend.

Great version of the classic game. As a player of previous versions, took a little getting used to the importance of accumulating culture and faith points. And boy: this game punishes you for conquering.

You can still do so, but you definitely pay the price for occupying cities, so it requires more thought. Indeed, the game gives you a push to try for other victories (culture, science, diplomacy). It was frustrating at first to be punished for conquest, but I wound up appreciating that.

Even the screaming sounds when you attack cities makes you feel ashamed of conquest. In sum, I appreciated the less warlike nature of this edition of Civ.

very fun, layman’s terms world domination strategy game w/a steady ramp-up to fairly complete knowledge of game’s in’s and out’s; nifty graphics. Only “knock” would be game length, which can be moderated by how many AI players you decide on.

At the end of the day, this is a great strategy game. It’s worthy of the Civ name and brings a lot of positive changes to the table. Strategically and tactically it’s a deeper, more satisfying experience ultimately.

You feel a lot more like a tactician, forward deploying front lines, follow on attacks, and keeping artillery and other ranged units in the rear. Fighting over resources is a real and necessary strategy now as well.

But its detracting issues still leave me wanting more. Especially how similar each game feels to the next. A cultural victory means filling up five of the civil policy trees, which means pumping out sufficient culture to adopt policies more frequently than your opponents.

But that’s something you’ll be trying to do anyway if you have any interest in expanding your borders. Military victory is straightforward, but if you’re ahead technologically you’re likely ahead in production and military units as well anyway so conflict eventually tends to become unavoidable.

Diplomatic victory once again involves building the U. N. and voting but by the time you get there you will have already had a lot of battles and adopted a lot of policies as well. Since your options for fostering peace are extremely limited, you usually have no choice but to fight even if your goal is peaceful.

The same goes for the space race, which is virtually unchanged. It seems a bit too easy to reach any and all of the victory goals, with little substantive gameplay difference between them in terms of what you’ll experience while progressing toward them, no matter which nation you play as.

City States are fun, but both they and puppet states are a poor replacement for Vassal states. All in all, I’m happy with the game. If you love Civ, you’ll likely enjoy this game. But if you fell in love with any of the things about Civ IV that are gone from this game, you may end up feeling overwhelmed.

Fortunately, the strategic depth and the good things it brings to the table – to say nothing of the DX II tessellation and fresh coat of paint it spruces things up with – are enough to make it worth a buy if it’s been a while since you’ve played Civ IV.

You’ll have a good time. But I’m hoping some of the available (or future) DLC that I have yet to invest in will address some of these issues. TLDR version: war is deeper and more satisfying; game looks and plays beautifully; everything else is either been there done that, or much more limited than in Civ IV.

But the game is still a blast to play if you’re into 4x strategy at all and brings some positive changes to the table as well.

I am new to CIV but I am loving learning the mechanics as a single player and with friends. We have a great time playing together and trying to go to war with each other. or help each other out. Especially when you can’t actually be together in person this is a great way to spend an evening on discord hanging out.

Its like a table top game and I love it.

The game holds, giving you 10 new Civilizations with their own new leaders, 7 new Technologies and lots of new troops, buildings and resources! This did change quite a few things in the game-play, making your usual routines a bit different.

I myself found it rather interesting and it took me a while to read and understand all the new things and how it all worked again but it was all for the better. I think it made the game better and if you already liked the game and wanted more stuff then this is what you’re looking for.

So as last words. Can’t say there’s anything to bash on this expansion so if you want something to make the game even better than it is, get it! It will give you a good reason to play the game.

I must admit I have not been playing on this new expansion for very long yet I think this a brilliant buy. I have missed religion in the games and also the spy/espionage concept which I use to love. The new civs are brilliant yet there are not as many new units, building and wonders that I was hoping for.

Also I am still not sure I like only being able to place no more than one unit per tile. I build massive armies yet lack the room to house within the world.

This is a great addition to Civilization 5, which focus on the later years of the game. Including Ideology, Trade routes Foreign and Domestic, and great works of art music and writing.

I’ve been wanting this game for so long and now I’ve finally got it but finding it hard to get people willing to learn to play it. I’m a big fan of the Civ pc series and have played it since the original on the amiga 500 back in the early 90’s.

Not having played many complex board games like this it took me a whole weekend to unbox and figure out. This game is really complex. I’ve finally got the hang of the rules and had a couple of games and I love it but unfortunately my gf does not.

Tried to get some of my family into it but they were put off by the learning curve. So as far as the game goes now that I have got a grasp of the rules I really like it and can’t wait to play it. Downside is finding like minded people willing to put in the effort to learn how to play the game.

So if you have a core group of board gamers and already into similar games like settlers of cattan then I would highly recommend this. Its reviewed well on the net too with about 8/10’s. My rating I will give it the same 8/10.

They have done a great job of converting the pc game into a well polished beautifully presented board game. There’s also some downloadable content on gameboardgeek. com that helps with keeping track of things while you play the game which gets difficult once you have 3 cities and get closer to the end of the game.

Always was a fan of the computer Civ since the II. The board game is great. It can’t translate everything from the PC, and thank God for that. There’s plenty of ways to win, the random combat mechanic is nice but could be more clarified in the rules how it works.

Aside from that, it is not a beer and pretzels game. It requires logical thinking and time. It is a great buy if you arent’t a fan. If you are a fan, its almost a must-buy.

The game had less damage then reported. 99.99% of all of the pieces were accounted for. Got here early.

It is over 10 years since I read Samuel Huntington’s full length expansion of his classic Foreign Affairs article. This was read during my final year at university, and back then, it was fashionable amongst many to refute, or outrightly mock Professor Huntington’s disturbing piece of work.

The work was derided amongst my fellow students, it was frequently derieded amongst academia, it is something of a fashion statement to deride Huntington’s work. Why? Could it be, perhaps, because of a deep, inbuilt feeling that we just know that he was right? In the 10+ years since I read this monumental study, I have encountered very little in current events to refute his argument.

Time has vindicated Huntington, and will continue to vindicate him. Huntington identifies 9 civilizations, Western, Orthodox, Islamic, Latin American, African, Sinic, Hindu, Buddhist and Japanese. The 2 civilizations that Huntington considers to be the most potentially antagonistic toward the West are Islamic and Sinic, however, as this book was completed in 2006, various conflicts had not yet played out between the West and the Orthodox World, and this is deserving of a special place as a potential faultline civilization.

Huntington considers the value systems of Sinic and Islamic culture as essentially incompatible with the West, and attempts to assimilate or reconcile Western values with these cultures is ultimately futile.

Therefore, Huntington advocates a careful, cautious approach to foreign policy, wherein Western powers should try to mediate civilizational disputes, but not directly involve themselves with them. Why do I think Huntington has been vindicated? The list is not exhaustive.

Firstly, attempts through that ill conceived 2003-? War in Iraq to democracize Iraq has proved a colossal failure. The Arab Spring led to an outright dead end for all countries involved except Tunisia, and Turkish membership of the EU remains a pipe dream.

However, while Huntington’s work was written before the full democratization of South Korea and Taiwan, we have seen little progress in China toward any kind of accountable or open system, and China has recently given Hong Kong a half-baked, managed democracy.

If anything, the civilizational faultline that has become more pronounced is the Orthodox World. Russia and US relations are at the worst they have ever been since the end of the Cold War, and the continuing support of Putin’s strongman leadership amongst the Russian population shows a general preference in Russia at least for strongman leadership, rather than a more pluralistic approach.

Thesituation in Ukraine is perhaps the Western-Orthodox divide being played out within a single, fragmented state, and is in many ways the result of naive Western attempts to push Western Institutions (NATO and the EU) into the Orthodox World.

A further example was the almost universal Western support (exception Spain) for the unilateral independence of Kosovo, and then the complete reverse of this foreign policy toward the Russian unification with Crimea.

This is not to distract oneself with current issues. Huntington’s original work was written in response to the 1991 Gulf War, and the expanded book was based on events in the 90s, such as the Yugoslav wars, Chechnya, and the very nature of Sino-Western relations.

However, very little has transpired to prove Huntington wrong, and few would argue that his main policy proscription, that the West only mediate, not directly involve themselves with disputes involving other civilizations.

I think the dust will never settle on the debate over Huntington’s thesis, but Huntington has convinced this reader at least.

Of course, it is not up to date, but extremely introspective, kind of depressing. The reader will find an enormous array of sobering thoughts that he/she won’t be permitted to even raise in a university history class.

It has simply become a classic: just as true and relevant now as when it was written, more than 20 years ago. In fact it says things which are true but which no mainline publisher would touch today. Its only possible sequel would be “Destined for War,” by Graham Allison, q v).

Civilization is such a great game. theres so much stuff to do and every time you play you can do it differently. I love that it has a narration and the graphic are great. theres alway room for improvement and I def.

recommend to gamers who like comp. games.

Love PC games. Kinda like controlling my my games destiny by building up civilizations. Forming armies to concur others and protect your cities. Making beautiful cities and landscapes. Definitely will let other know about this game.

Civ 1 and 3 are fantastic. Civ 2 is incomplete, lacking some scenarios but Civ 2: Test of Time is on there and complete. Unfortunately you will need a Virtual Machine (VM) and a workstation with a physical disc drive to make ISO’s that can be mounted if you want to play the games as they are not compatible with Windows 7 or above.

I used to play this game with my father and grandfather in “hotseat” mode, passing the laptop back and forth. Still one of my favorite titles in the series. Civ III, IV, and V are equally fun in my opinion.
