Best Civilization Beyond Earth Background (2024 Updated)

Found out about this game through boardgamegeek, where it’s rated #2 on their top 100 list, and on top of that it’s rated 8. 73 by users, which is the highest rating of games with over 5k voters in the world, I’ve bought other games based off the ratings of that site because it’s an excellent way to find out about new great games & this one definitely doesn’t disappoint, now Home Essentials Direct has it for 50$, which is an absolute steal.

After setting it up it was obvious it would be quite the project to learn by reading the directions, it would be much easier if you had someone to walk you through it who knew what they were doing. First we tried just learning by reading the directions but that became a bit overwhelming and we weren’t quite sure if we were understood things correctly, the two books it comes with are pretty complex.

For anyone who is learning about the game I would HIGHLY suggest playing on the website boardgaming-online, it’s free to play and although the interface is pretty “microsoft-painty” and looks pretty cheap, the concepts in the online version all work, I would get a friend and sit down and open a few browser windows and sign in to each as one person and play back and forth that way first.

That way you don’t have to worry about if you’re getting it right or not, it makes it MUCH easier to learn because the website lists what you CAN do every turn and handles all the sequential steps on its own which is one of the most difficult aspects to learn on your own, you can read the directions on some of the more advanced concepts while you go and it makes much more sense, once we played through a few of the online games it made understanding the game & the rules so much more simple, highly recommend the online game 1-2 times through to get a hang of the concepts, I guarantee it’ll make learning the game much less daunting.

This game plays fantastic, I love the turn sequencing, the strategy & the variety of “routes” you can take, makes the replay value much higher, it’s quite impressive what they’ve managed to pack into this game.

A lot of concepts in the game similar to that of Castles of Burgundy in that you get “x” amount of moves per turn and you’re trying to maximize the “points” you get by those, they’re definitely very similar, I’ve been playing a lot of the popular highly rated games and find this to be my favorite so far, probably replacing Castles, and I do love that game, if you like that.

you’ll definitely love this. I like that this game favors strategy > luck, there’s definitely a lot to analyze, so if you’re sitting down to play with players who tend to go slow on their turns you’ll want to make sure everyone has several hours to dedicate to finishing the game in one sitting.

I’ve included a picture that shows the game all setup and actually being played, one thing that is definitely worth noting is just how much space it takes up on a table, for those of you who have a surface in mind that you’re planning on playing on you’ll want to make sure that it’s big enough, the table in my picture is 55″ x 32″ & you can see that just the 2 player setup on here is very tight.

For anyone who is a lover of strategy games and knows people who do too, this is an absolute necessity to add to your collection!.

I finally bit the bullet and bought this game after years of looking at it. I can say that the game has a lot of depth too it BUT it can be very overwhelming the first playthrough. There are alot of boards, cards, and blocks you have to attend to each round.

But once you get the rules and gameplay down, it does come through as a good game overall. I rated 3/5 bc the game could turn alot of new gamers off with the difficultly level. If you are an experienced gamer, it’s definitely worth a look!.

This game is a ton of fun. It is one of my favorite strategy games I have played. The only downside is that it can take a bit longer (3 hours or more) if you are not focused and in the zone. However, that still won’t stop me from playing.

I have only been able to play it 2 player so far and it works great for that. If you enjoy civilization building type games (this has no map though) then I HIGHLY recommend this.

Civilization Revolution isn’t a bad game – on the contrary, it’s a good game. But that doesn’t seem like enough in the world of Civ Meier’s Civilization. The game, on it’s own is fun to play, has decent variety in challenges and difficulty, and has gotten me more than my money’s worth in entertainment time.

The problems exist only when compared to other Civilization Games. Civilization has long been a PC franchise and in the interest of streamlining this for consoles much of the charm has been lost. Civilization Revolution has the following drawbacks when compared to the PC versions of Civilization: Much less robust diplomacy options.

Far fewer playable civs. Shallower AI. It’s also worth noting that players do LOVE the multiplayer in Civilization Revolution BUT the servers for this version are all shut down so unless you are playing on a LAN with multiple copies, TVs, and PS3s, that won’t be an option for you.

Ultimately, the game is fun and if you really need to have this on a console or you are new to Civilization it will probably be just fine. But if you are familiar with the franchise and have a PC that can run it, you’ll find a lot more depth in the PC versions of Civilization VI, Civilization: Beyond Earth, Civilization V, and even Civilization IV.

Civilization 3 on the PC is my go to game. I’ve spent (wasted?) hours playing it, usually taking about 8 hours per game. Civ Revolution for the Xbox 360 is a lot quicker 3-4 hours on the easier levels.

It has the advantage of being a console game so loads quickly. It does have a few scenarios, the only one I have played is Lightning game which last 1-1. 5 hours. There is plenty of depth in any of the games on Civ Rev, although not to the same level as the Civ games on PC, as you would expect.

All in all, I was surprised how much of the ‘Civilization’ experience is captured on the console. Some times the animations can be a bit busy and some times it is difficult to know just who is attacking you and where they come from.

Other than that, I do thoroughly recommend this game even though it is a bit old for a console game.

I loved all of the Civilization games, from the board game to this Xbox 360 game. The game offers you many choices to begin with. You can choose from many different countries, different difficulty levels, and even play out different scenarios.

Even though it doesn’t have the extensive game play of the computer version, it is an excellent starter. Of course the only complaints is that the computer version does have a lot more and you can go till you actually win.

In this version, you are limited in turns. Some actually like that idea more, that way you’re not tied to the same game for eternity. It is a fun game and let’s you play whichever way you want. If you don’t like to fight a lot, play the “Chieftain” version, and work towards building “The Great Wall” so that everyone has to offer you peace while you build up.

If you love to fight more, then “learn” all the ones that allow you to progress in weapons. Of course, either way will help you to win through money, culture, domination, or technology. I highly recommend it for those who love a lot of choice in their games and like it to be a bit more fast paced and light compared to the computer version.

Fazit Sid Meiers Civilization IV: War of Two Cities bringt eine auf das Wesentliche reduzierte Version des PC-Klassikers. Grafisch und spieltechnisch bewegt man sich in sehr engen Grenzen. Fr erfahrene Spieler wirkt das Spiel eher langweilig, da es sich um ein simples Spielchen handelt, das weit entfernt von der Komplexitt des Originals bleibt.

Beim Vergleich im Internet fand ich, dass Version IV ihr grafisch durchaus gewachsen ist. Dafr gibt es das Spiel aber schon zu einem Bruchteil des Preises. Auch ist Civilization IV nher am Klassiker, als es Civilization V ist.

Im Internet gibt es dann noch ein offizielles Update zur Version 4. 1. 7, sowie eine berarbeitete Version der Grafiken und der bersetzung, die von Fans gemeinsam mit den Entwicklern hergestellt wurden.

So aufpoliert kann sich Civilization IV auch im Jahr 2011 mit seinem eigenen Nachfolger messen.

I have played a number of strategy games over the years–from “Spaceward Ho,” Master of Orion and Sid Meier’s games to the Empire Earth series–and Galactic Civilization II: Dread Lords now ranks up there among my favorites.

You get to play one of the stock races or you can customize your race by choosing from a variety of racial bonuses that you can tailor to your play style. From there you begin with your homeworld and expand outwards, staking your claim in the universe.

If you were a fan of the first two Master of Orion games you will really enjoy Galactic Civilization. Graphics-wise there is nothing spectacular about this game. It is turn based and while you control the composition of your battle fleets, the computer always controls the actual fighting.

However, you can control the design and look of your ships and can design individual ships. This gives you an enormous advantage if you play smart: for example if your opponents are relying heavily on rail gun weapon technology, you can counter by building ships designed to stop that sort of weaponry.

The game gets good support and has been updated regularly to address issues. The game has been tweaked a number of times to make it more enjoyable and there are plans to make it even more satisfying.

The AI is quite good and apparently getting better with future updates. It can recognize an imminent attack (say when you mass a fleet on a border) and you’ll sometimes get a diplomatic message warning you to back off.

If you get too far ahead technologically, the other civilizations will refuse to trade any of their weapons techs with you. A civilization clearly about to be overwhelmed will surrender rather than fight to the bitter end; but usually they will surrender to one of your rivals, giving them a few extra planets and resources that will tend to balance things out.

Galactic Civilizations II is not for the “fast twitch” crowd; it is a slow paced, thoughtful game that plays out over days. I would give it 5 of 5 stars, however there are a few things I’m not satisfied with: for example, there is still a memory issue that causes lag in the latter stages of the games with larger universes, particularly when reloading a saved game.

I’m sure this will be addressed eventually, but for now it is a remains a problem.

The space graphics are fantastic. However the game loads and unloads at a snails pace. There were no rules or instructions, such as what knowledge gains lead to what advancement. There are 4 ways to win, but I have only figured out how to win using one method.

I don’t make individual moves of pieces, but set where I want the computer to move the piece to and autopilot takes over. I like this, but it does not stop when encountering another race’s ship. It should so I can note where it is, attack or not and then resume.

Because of this, I am not as addicted to this game as the original Civilization. For me this is good. Access to an information knowledge base would have vastly improved this game.

The game is a lot of fun, but two things mar the experience. First off, the game is rather bland. Other than the Altarians, who are good human guys, and the Drengin, who are the bad klingon like guys, you’d be hard pressed to put a name to the face of any of the other aliens.

They are just boring, just generic humanoids. The only alien to have any real personality are only a minor race, a race of evil Teddy Bears. The blandness extends to the tech tree. Titanium Armor. Titanium Armor II.

Titanium Armor III. Then a new armor name and repeat. Pretty much all the starship techs are like that. And are many of the planetary improvements. While there are occasional random events, all of them have been recycled from the first game, and there weren’t all that many different ones in that to begin with.

Secondly, the game feels unfinished and unpolished, and the game is rather buggy. The initial version was playable, but only just. After 2 patches, it does seem stable, but still not 100% polished. There are also still a number of “design flaws” to be worked out.

For instance, the AI surrenders at the drop of a hat, which can be infuriating. It’s also missing a few features, like some bits of technology. Not enough to be a problem, and are apparently being added in patches, but somewhat annoying.

Still, the bugs and missing stuff are annoying enough that I am knocking off a point. In 2007, when everything is fixed and there, it will probably be a 9/10, but right now it’s a 8/10. Still, definitely worth buying if you are a turn based strategy fan.
