Buying Hallmark ornaments is a tradition at my house. I bought them for my children and now I am buying them for my granddaughter. She loves the ornaments that have sound. This is the perfect ornament for a little girl.

I received this as a free promotional item when I purchased a Fire TV. This is my second introduction to Amazon’s Alexa integration products. It’s great for controlling the new TV by voice (although the included remote with the TV also allowed this feature) Easy setup and took some reading of the manual with the Fire TV to figure out the integration.

I can’t say I would put this in every room of the house but an interesting addition to the TV. I was disappointed that the Fire TV I purchased would not integrate the sound very effectively. There is a WiFi option but the TV or the Dot would not support the connection regarding audio setup with the TV.

My only audio connection with the Fire TV was via Bluetooth and for some reason the audio on the Dot was very low. So low that it was not usable for that purpose and I removed the Bluetooth pairing. Not sure what would need to take place to ensure WiFi audio pairing with a Fire TV but otherwise OK.

Let me start by saying that I was completely anti-listening technology in my home. After a long discussion with the wife, we compromised and she bought one. Since I lost that battle, I have installed 3 others in the house.

I haven’t regretted it. I bought some wall plug mounts that make install super easy and I can hide them behind furniture for a less cluttered look in the house. The Amazon echo is actually a great tool for your smart home.

Yes, they are listening. But so is your phone. I like that I can play my music on multiple devices so I go from room to room if I’m cleaning or putting away folded laundry. I don’t use my stovetop timer anymore, I just tell Alexa to set a timer for me.

If I’m working in the garage and my wife needs something she can drop in and we can talk completely hands free. Which is great when my hands are too dirty to mess with my phone. I use the Alexa app for home automation.

It’s nice because I can shut off the whole house while we’re away. if we’re gone for extended periods of time I can have random lights turn on and off around the house so it looks like someone is home.

I also have routines for waking up, getting ready for work, going to bed, and even for when I’m in different parts of the house. I have tried home automation with the Google apps, the Apple smart home app, and all the various ones that come with each device I have installed.

The Alexa app is the most comprehensive. There is still work they can do to make it better, but it works far better than the others for our home setup. The bad: the app doesn’t allow for multiple users with different Amazon accounts within the home.

You have to have every device setup on the same account. My wife and I have separate EVERYTHING. So, sharing an Amazon account is less than ideal. We listen o different styles of music. We shop for different types of items.

She reads mystery novels and fiction, I don’t read. Plus, getting gifts for each other is a lot harder when you can see the same Amazon purchases. With that said, Amazon support is amazing!! I have given feedback multiple times and each time they have responded quickly and ensured they understand my issues.

I’m sure there is plenty I didn’t cover because there are features I simply haven’t used yet, but overall I give the echo dot 4 stars.

This is way more fun than I expected. I dont use a lot of smarthome features, but now that I’m getting used to Alexa, things are about to change. Really convenient way to listen to tunes while I’m working on the computer or playing on my phone.

I use it a lot for simple questions and information too. Im going to order some smart light bulbs soon so I can make her do even more for me. Haha My major complaint is that I can’t use it to call or text someone unless they sign up with the Alexa app too.

That’s a loss of a whole star there, because Google smart devices do that just fine with my Samsung Galaxy devices. This was free with the purchase of a TV, but I’ve mulled around the idea of getting one for a few years.

Ive got other speakers that are better sounding, but as far as convenience goes, this little Echo is great for me. It sits right beside my recliner on a table where I embarrassingly spend most of my time.

There has never been a problem of hearing it or not hearing me. The reminders arw handy too. Hve been dabbling with the shopping lists feature too. I espect to use this more and more but really wish I could call and text my peeps with her.

The ornament certainly looks like the character, ET & his heart lights up whenever he speaks, which is cool. However, the quality of the “audio” is a little disappointing for the longer phrases like, “I’ll be right here”.

Sounds like he’s talking in a “tunnel” w/ an echo effect, which makes ET spooky sounding! Would have been awesome if the designer of this ornament could have made his finger light up, too. Overall, it’s still a nice ornament paying tribute to this iconic movie character.

This is such an amazing ornament for the price! Not only does E. T. glow when you push the button on the grass but he says multiple phrases from the movie including, “Ouch!” “E. T. phone home!” “I’ll be right here.

But what we did not have and always wanted, was a Lego Advent calendar, since we all also love Legos! This set is absolutely adorable, and my kids are so excited! I bought the Orba to use it as an innovative, creative, wireless midi controller. The built-in sound engine etc were more of an extra to me. Having played with it for a few days, my main thoughts are: As it is, I can not use this as a wireless midi controller for my DAW.

The Orba only supports wireless operation on Android and Apple products, not on Windows. If you want to use it on Windows, you’ll need an extra purchase: a CME WIDI Bud Pro, which is about half the price of the Orba itself.

This connects to your computer over USB and allows the Bluetooth operation. So, until that arrives, what I have is a midicontroller over USB, which isn’t great with all the gestures like moving and shaking etc, and a standalone music device, which is fun, but can only really function as an idea pad.

I wish these ideas recorded on the Orba could be exported as midi files for use in a DAW, too. Now I need to let the Orba play its loop and record the incoming midi in real time, and then stretch the recordings to fit my DAW’s BPM.

So, in summary: it’s a great idea, the thing itself is made very well, but the operation in conjunction with other gear leaves quite a lot to be desired.

As a MIDI controller, it’s just ok, if you’re up for the setup; Bluetooth MIDI is only available for Mac products and an in-depth MIDI editor is only available for Max for Live, so elsewise you’ve got cabling and custom setup to mess with – it works, it’s just that their marketing kind of leads you to believe that it’s an out-of-the-box plug-and-play experience for everyone, when it won’t be for many users.

As a stand alone device, the Orba does not measure up to the hype: Sounds are basic, uninspiring and uneditable. There is often-occasional latency when triggering the internal sounds – latency which records onto the onboard sequencer – and the onboard sequencer does not have the ability to quantize, so it can take many frustrating takes to record a simple idea in-time.

Also, all sounds have clicks and distortion through the headphone jack, regardless of played velocity or device volume. Switching between sounds while loop-recording causes all sound on the device to cut out for half a beat, with accompanying crackle/distortion, which is jaring and kills any vibe.

There’s a four part sequencer, but after recording-in the third part, expect distortion and crackle on all parts upon playback – frankly, the audio from this thing just sounds bad, all the time. Controls are janky and inconsistent.

Sometimes pressing the record key combo will record, but sometimes it will not record, but switch instruments instead (it shouldn’t do this. ) Sometimes instrument selection will switch mid-recording, ruining your take (it shouldn’t do this.

) Sometimes selecting the bass sound will trigger the record button (it’s not supposed to do this either. ) User-recorded songs will occasionally self-delete at random, gone forever. All-in-all, while Artiphon sure did a good job of marketing this product – on the ground, outside of a paid reviewer’s hands, the Orba is poorly designed, badly implemented and frustrating to use.

I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

There seems to be a wide berth between the hardware and software sides of this UX equation. Physically, this is one of the most aesthetically pleasing interfaces I’ve used. Pads are responsive, feedback from the LEDs is easy to understand after a short learning curve, and the whole unit feels deceptively powerful like a Poke ball.

My unit arrived in need of a firmware update – not unusual, though these ones apparently just shipped since MF was out of stock a couple of weeks ago. No worries, I’ll just download the iPad app and update the firmware.

Wait. I need to physically connect to a computer running MacOS or Windows 10 64-bit? We’re a Chromebook/iOS family these days, but I think I have a Windows computer gathering dust around here somewhere.

3 hours later, I’m finally done updating the firmware so I can finally use this thing in tandem with my phone and iPad. For a Bluetooth controller to require a physical connection for updates is, quite frankly, and I’m not afraid to say it, bananas.

So help me if the next minor bug fix requires me to pull out this virus-ridden Windows box and brick my Orba TWICE before a successful update, I will stab somebody. Please either make firmware updates possible over Bluetooth or allow users to continue using iOS (or Android I guess) to use an un-updated Orba until a physical connection is convenient.

Sounds are great, MIDI control over Bluetooth seems to be solid so far – just stop getting in the way of pushing the power button and getting to work and this will be an amazing tool.

move your finger from the outside edge part of your lid across the lid toward your nose. it is very refreshing. If it gets in your eye, the sting goes away very quickly. I have put a drop or two directly in my eye to stop itching.

It is great to gargle with for sore throats. Good to clean cuts, most bug bites, and scrapes with it. Time proven results by me as I’ve used it a long time.

I’ve been an Irish Whiskey drinker for MANY years, having been converted from the Jack Daniels Black Label Tennessee Sour Mash to the ‘original Yellow Label Jameson whiskey’ back in the 70’s. Trying ‘new’ Jameson products at some of my favorite Irish pubs in the SE Michigan area, I first discovered and enjoyed the Black Label Special Reserve and it quickly replaced the Yellow Label product as my preferred Jameson whiskey.

When the labelling for the Black Label Reserve was replaced with the ‘standard’ Black Label Whiskey, I offered ‘blind tastings’ of both to my closest whiskey-drinking friends to see if they could taste the differences between the two Jameson whiskeys that I had experienced.

We were all in agreement: there was a subtle difference! I bought up all the bottles of BL Special Reserve and keep them ‘locked away’ for very special occasions. For ‘everyday whiskey’, it is the Black Label Irish in the liter bottles, now available in Michigan.

I was introduced to the Black Label by a great friend, a fellow Irishman, truly he is more Scottish but when we share Jamesons, he lets out the Irish side. He knows my passion for Jamesons and because of cost, also knows that I stick with the regular label most often.

I must say, there is a richness and smoothness to the Black Label that is truly remarkable. I usually favor my Jamesons with ginger beer or ginger ale. However, the Black Label is quite nice with a heavy pour over a couple of ice cubes.

It goes down very smoothly I must say!.

Used to buy Balvenie Double Cask till the price topped $60. Tried regular Jameson because. well I’m Irish so give it a shot (pun alert). Wasn’t thrilled. A little ‘one dimensional’ I thought. So tried Black Barrel.

It’s now my go to dram! Takes a little longer to open up, but when it does (whisper ‘water’ in it’s vicinity, not too loudly) it’s great! Sublime vanilla/butterscotch nose, sweet oak and fruit notes.

The longer you indulge, the more you find. and it changes as it opens. Growing into REAL cinnamon. (The sweet genuine stuff. not the bitter common substitute) Palate is just as complex with a welcome intensity and warmth.

spicy/cinnamon, full with vanilla and butterscotch. maybe a little nougat. and hints of citrus and floral. Enjoy slowly as it changes over time. I watched a video on the internet where a ‘famous’ big time scotch guy was telling people how to ‘nose’ your dram.

his main point was if you’re not sticking your nose full into the glass. you’re doing it wrong! My ‘amateur’ opinion. start at a couple in inches above the glass and enjoy the complex with your eyes closed.

pick out and try to define what you find. then move down to an inch and repeat. THEN put your nose in the glass. then reverse the process. finally taking a sip. I go really slow with only a small sip.

just enough to swish around and swallow for experience as I find alcohol can bring on a migraine. so I have to be careful. but to me it adds a note of potential danger to the process 🙂 So there’s my review.
