There are a few different types of chicken feed that can be used for layers. One type is a complete feed, which contains all the nutrients that chickens need in order to lay eggs. Another type is a grower feed, which is designed for chickens that are still growing and not yet laying eggs.
Scratch and Peck Soy Free Layer is made using Certified Organic whole grains. Soy Free Layer feed is professionally formulated to provide a perfectly balanced nutritious diet for your hens. This Soy Free Layer is a minimum protein of 16% and is suitable for use with waterfowl.
Feed from 20 weeks of age and beyond. Adult birds are estimated to eat about 2lbs/bird each week. Always offer plenty of fresh water and provide the appropriate sized Grit free choice! *New minimal packaging helps take care of our people and the planet!.
Both my ducks were in bad shape when I adopted them, and not used to anything but the crappiest junk food. It didn’t take long to transition them to Scratch and Peck’s Organic Feed. The results are stunning — from raggedy, dull, dirty and bedraggled, they have both transformed to glossy, clean, bright-eyed and happy birds with the smoothest, silkiest, healthiest feathers.
I have been buying this brand for my hens for a while and mix it with other things. However, I wanted to supplement their feed with grower food, so I bought this. Imagine my surprise when it arrives and it was the EXACT same product I’ve been buying.
It’s for all stages and mixed flocks. I see that now that I look closely at the picture. but I was going by the title Chewy put and the brand that I was already familiar with. Not the end of the world – I’ll use it up.
However, if you have little chicks or ducklings, I would not rely on this as the sole source of feed.
The “scratch and peck” food I normally buy is cracked grains not pellets. I didn’t realize this would be pellets. I like the price. But my ducks don’t care for it. They eat it because they love to eat but this is the only food so far that they haven’t cared for.
They even go crazy over purina duck pellets, but not this stuff.
Small Pet Select Chicken Layer Feed helps support healthy and happy hens. Containing a mix of high protein pellets, grains, seeds and herbs this premium feed has the nutrition needed to support a fabulous flock.
This combination feed is even lightly basted with an enriching omega 3 vegetable oil. The all-natural ingredients are non-GMO, corn and soy free, and locally sourced in the Pacific Northwest—a chicken-friendly feed you can feel good about!.
I recently transitioned my girls to this feed. They were on a whole grain feed last summer, but when the company changed the formula, I saw a lot of it wasted and my girls would not eat it! I decided pellets are probably healthier.
I had them on grubbly farms pellet and whole grain feed for fall/winter, but they hated the pellets! They would not eat them no matter what I tried. I decided I’d give it one last ditch effort and try out this brand since the pellets looked smaller and better.
Well, it took a good month with mixing it with their old feed (which they didn’t care for), and what do you know! They love this feed and actually eat it all!! What I ended up doing was only putting enough feed in their feeder for a few days.
That way they’d eat it down. After that if I noticed there were still pellets I would not refill till they’d eaten them. They were stubborn at first! But they caved eventually. They will eat when they are hungry and even eat pellets! But I will see they gobble these up and don’t waste any.
The company also mentions their pellets are much yummier and chickens love them. I can attest to that! They love this feed so much more than grubbly farms. I’m not sure what the deal is with grubbly farms, but it just sure didn’t work for my girls.
I gave it about 5 months too! One other thing I think is amazing about this feed is the quality controls! No random corn pieces mixed in (there was a lot of that with grubbly farms feed). So my advice is be patient!! They won’t eat the pellets right away if they’re not used to them, but after they pick out what they want, don’t refill the feeder.
Let them get hungry, cave and eat the pellets. They will eat when they get hungry. Trust me. Like I said now love them! I couldn’t be happier! Highly recommend this feed!.
Apparently I raised snobby and entitled chickens. This food is no doubt the freshest food I’ve yet to find. It is everything it claims to be. However, my chickens pick out what they like, then toss the rest on the ground like money grows on trees.
For the price, I can’t continue to try to force them to love this food so my journey continues, but I do think this food is worth it for those. less entitled chickens!.
Our newly adopted chickens came with a bag of this, so we purchased more. They love it! But it’s too expensive for a daily feed, we have 30 chickens, so we mix it with another feed. If it were less expensive then I’d give it 5 stars.
Scratch and Peck Naturally Free Layer is a non-GMO verified and certified organic product featuring a blend of organic whole grains grown in the Pacific Northwest. This layer is designed to be the healthiest and most natural product available for your laying hens.
It contains a high amount of calcium and slightly lower protein levels than Scratch and Peck’s Naturally Free Grower, to aid in producing strong eggshells. Should only be fed to birds that are laying or will lay in the near future.
I wanted to address the negative reviews about the product being a very fine grind as opposed to larger pieces. The smaller grind is safer for your chicks, until they reach an age where they can fully process seeds, I would say around 3 weeks or older.
I have had one chick die and currently one that may be going through a VERY expensive surgery from an obstruction caused by large sized grain being in the chick starter and subsequently causing an obstruction.
In my case it was peas and it was from another brand of chick starter, which did not screen out the larger pieces. If a piece of large seed such as a pea gets stuck, your chick will not be able to break it down, especially in the first few weeks of life.
If Scratch and Peck is making the seed a finer grind, there is good reason for it! I hope they continue to do so, and screen out large pieces, as this product seems far superior to more fully processed ones.
My chicks and chickens love it. The only reason I had tried another was the cost. If you are concerned about obstructions in your baby chicks, organic crumble is a good choice for the first two wks.
I like the ingredients of Scratch and Peck Organic Chick Starter Grower Feed, it’s probably the best retail chicken feed you can find. What I don’t like about it is how much dust is in each bag, as well as sticks and other debris.
The seeds and their casings get over grinded, so about half the bag is dust, so this is not a good feed to give to your chicks dry, but it makes a good wet mash, which the chicks devour, causing almost no waste of food.
So I recommend this food to feed as a wet mash, not as dry feed.
I really like seeing the ingredients in a less processed form, and the chickens seem to agree. They were wasting a lot less just feeding dry, but I hated seeing such a good feed scattered across the ground nonetheless.
So, I started soaking it overnight so that it sticks together a bit more and helps release the nutrients. They went nuts for it! It was a huge success and almost no waste. Then reading up on fermented feed, I decided to try that, and I love it even more.
I think feeding just dampened or even fermented is really the way to go with any feed, though I do keep a dry feed in a rat proof feeder in the coop for emergencies. That said, the chickens love the fermented stuff, or at least soaked.
Almost no waste and I feel good about the health benefits of the feed, especially since it eventually ends up in the eggs we eat.
Complete source of all-natural nutrition that laying ducks and chickens over 5 months old need to thrive. Certified organic by the USDA, Non-GMO Project Verified, and made in the USA at family-owned facilities.
Grains are left in their whole, natural state, giving feed a shelf-life of 6 months after being milled. Wholesome recipe is enriched with vitamins, minerals and omega-3s, while also being free from corn and soy.
Contains higher levels of calcium and the ideal amount of protein needed for producing strong eggshells.
Ugghhh, we used to love this brand but over time we found more ends of the mill “dust” than grain. Also, I highly suspect our girls were not getting enough vitamins & minerals, it just went from bad to worse with molting & seasonal changes.
Hard rough molts, hardly any of our girls laid consistently and they became under weight. Although we free range, all girls are protected from wildlife yet they never seemed to thrive on this food. We tried fermenting it but that caused vent gleet in a couple of our girls, enough was enough.
We changed to Kalmbach henhouse reserve – what a difference! Molt this year was easy, we have had some laying during the winter, (we do not use supplemental light) eggs & their shells are much better quality and the girls are now at a great weight.
I really wanted to love this feed. I did a ton of research and because our hens are pets and we want them to live a long, happy life, I wanted to feed them a soy free (less chance of certain cancers), whole seed food.
I feared that they might pick out the seeds and not eat the powder, which contains all the vitamins and minerals. I fed this food for about 6 weeks. My girls ate it with great happiness. They tossed it everywhere and made a huge mess.
But they seemed to really enjoy it. With that said, their eggs decreased in quality and then quantity. Then, one of my sweetest hens got super mean. I switched back to Kalmbach Organic crumbles and after about a week on Kalmbach, everyone is normal again.
happy, calm, laying healthy eggs. I am sure now that my girls were enjoying the seeds and had developed a vitamin and mineral deficiency, so be very careful with this food. The ingredients are superior, but it didn’t work well for my 6 beloved pet chickens.
I’ve used S&P Free Layer a couple times over the year when my preferred feed was out. I like that its organic and you can tell what’s in it. Its not a leftover of another process like a “grain product”.
Who knows what that is, right? Anyway, the girls love the whole grains and go nuts emptying the feeders, BUT what remains are the minerals and supplements! They don’t eat all of it, picking out the good stuff.
Even after putting it back through the feeders, it never gets completely eaten. I noticed lots miss-fires and soft shelled eggs when they transitioned to 100% S&P. I’m sure that’s ’cause they aren’t eating all the calcium and mineral “dust” in the feed.
Once they were transitioned back to their regular Non-GMO pelleted feed, the soft shelled eggs went away and production went back up.
Help your laying hens be eggs-traordinary with Kruse’s Perfection Brand Poultry Layer Crumble Chicken Feed! This complete fixed-formula feed is designed to help give your laying hens 16 weeks and older the nutrients they need for strong and healthy eggs.
It’s formulated with 17 percent protein for optimal laying and oyster shells to help create stronger eggs. Essential vitamins and minerals fortify this feed for your hens. It’s also crumbled for a smaller size and easier eating.
It’s a great feed option to help your girls lay the day away!.
I tried this feed because it promised ‘complete nutrition’. Well, it doesn’t matter how complete the formula is if the chickens turn their beaks up at it. This brand looks like it’s 90% cracked corn, which chickens only like marginally.
Eventually they put a dent in what I have thrown to them but we’re talking over a period of 8-10 hours. There is an awful lot of corn scattered around the yard which they ignore. It seems I’ll have to go back to my old brand.
Not sure about egg production because I typically get 5-6 per week from each of my girls, and that goes up in the spring typically anyway. However, my girls picked out all the yummy grains and just left behind the pellets and the oyster shells.
They refuse to eat the pellets, even when starving. I end up fermenting the leftovers at the bottom of the feeder, and they’ll eat it that way, but that’s a hassle. They aren’t typically picky eaters.
Optimum nutrition for healthy birds and nutritious eggs. A 16%-protein, high-calcium ration formulated with prebiotics, probiotics and yeast for top-producing laying hens once they reach 18 weeks of age.
Now with NEW Oyster Strong System for strong shells. Oyster shell provides another source of calcium when the hens need it most. Oyster shell is a larger particle size than limestone. This means that oyster shell will stay in the digestive tract longer and will provide a source of calcium for egg shell production over a longer period of time than smaller particle sources of calcium.
This is especially important at night when egg shell formation is rapidly occurring and dietary sources of calcium are limited because the bird is not eating.
We have been purchasing this exact product for quite a while. We love it and our chickens love it! I purchased a bag at Tractor Supply last night. It was late and already dark outside, but I needed to get it down to the coop and into the metal trashcan we store it in.
I opened the bag in the dark and immediately knew something was different before I could even see it. It smelled very odd. So I turned on my flashlight and the feed was way darker than normal. Hoping this is just a “bad batch” but looks like another customer that left a review also had the same issue.
If this is a new formula, we will be looking at purchasing a different brand.
I started off with Demur, my chickens didn’t seem healthy or active, their feathers were dull, their combs and waddles were pale too. I switch to Purina Layena and after a week i noticed a difference in their energy level and their feathers were starting to look healthy.
After a month my chickens combs and waddles are a beautiful healthy looking red, they run around like chickens should, their feathers are shiny and healthy looking and they started laying eggs! So when i bought some baby chicks i got the medicated Purina chick feed.
I bought extra chickens because everyone said i should buy extra because i will loose some. Well i haven’t lost one chick and i’m on my third batch of babies. The other ones have grown into very healthy and beautiful 5 month old hens who i switched to all Flock until they start laying.
I highly recommend any of the Purina chicken feeds! Thank you for making such great feed for all stages of my chickens life!.
First, I will write that I free range my hens and it has been terribly hot here. I bought this configuration hoping to pique the girls’ interest. The first feeding was not taken well and now they barely peck at it.
Some of the “pearls” did not separate properly in processing, leaving several stuck together and not easily broken apart. I am making a cold mash of it for the hot afternoons “doctored up” with blueberries, raw egg and crushed egg shells.
This they will eat better. I will be going back to crumbles.
When you have healthy chickens, you will have a happy flock. When it comes to keeping your chickens healthy and energetic, a proper diet is key. The DuMOR 16% Layer Pellet Poultry Feed offers premium quality chicken feed designed to nourish your chicken.
This pellet will help your chickens regardless of age, activity level or health status. The DuMOR brand has a delicious and wholesome formula developed specifically to meet your animal’s needs.
In late June of 2022 I made a large purchase of Dumor Layer Pellets and Dumor |Chick Starter. I like the feeds as the birds do well on this feed; however, I found on August 8,2022 that all the bags of Dumor Layer Pellets were badly molded.
This feed was kept in a dry ventilated barn. My Chick Starter was fine, but the last 13 bags of layer pellets were useless due to the mold. I called Dumor feeds on August 8, 2022 and talked to Pat. She told me that there was only a 30 day warranty on the feed.
I believe that this lot of feed was not dried correctly, as I have lived in farming country and I know how long the feed should last. I will no longer buy Dumor Feeds from Tractor Supply since they have such a limited warranty.
This was definitely not a storage problem but a problem with properly drying the pellets before they were bagged.
I’ve been purchasing Tractor Supply’s DuMOR 16% Layer Pellets for a couple of years now, and this has been a reliable option for my small flock of ducks. I throw in a little bit of high quality cat food as well, to boost my girls’ protein intake.
I primarily do this during the cooler winter months when bugs and other protein sources are not available. Prior to using DuMOR 16% Layer Pellets, my girls did not lay as much throughout the year. I credit DuMOR 16% Layer Pellets for the more consistent and lengthy laying season because it is the only thing I changed.
I give my girls “duck appropriate” scraps (lettuce, carrots, corn, peas, & some fruits), as I can throughout the year. My girls are able to free range on my property as well, but during the cold months their is significantly less available for them to forage on.
The DuMOR 16% Layer Pellets have met my needs, and the price is competitive and affordable. There is other options for livestock feed, in my area, but my local Tractor Supply Store crushes the competition with their outstanding customer service and reliability.
I’ve noticed much of the staff are younger individuals, but they are ALWAYS respectful, helpful, and eager to assist me. Those qualities are becoming less and less available, and for that reason, I will remain a loyal Tractor Supply customer.
I hope the corporate folks appreciate the Ponca City, OK Tractor Supply Store as much as I do!.
This is our first time raising chickens. Though we don’t have experience with other feed, I’m confident that the DuMOR Layer Pellet Poultry Feed does an excellent job. We have 3 hens and 1 rooster, all of which are a little over a year old, and they have been very healthy.
I had read that we should supplement our chicken’s diet with oyster shells so their eggs will have a stronger shell. We have had no need to do so, because the shells are super strong! Much more so than store-bought eggs.
We will continue to purchase the DuMOR layer pellets for as long as we have chickens.
With Grubbly Layer Pellets, your fluffy ones can enjoy a farm-fresh recipe inspired by foods they naturally love. Every peck is packed with nutrient-rich grubs, plants, vitamins, and minerals to keep them happily nourished.

SKU 65943733 – Nutrena NatureWise Layer 16% Crumble Poultry Feed is a specially designed formula enriched with vitamin D3 and essential oils for healthier hens and eggs, maximized egg production, superior eggshell strength, and noticeably vibrant egg yolks.
Crumble form encourages consumption and is necessary for smaller breeds such as bantams. It’s an ideal choice to provide advanced nutrition to your laying hens.
IšverstiShow in original languageI’ve been using NatureWise since I began raising chickens 6 years ago, but this new formula is better than ever! The first thing I noticed on opening the new bag was how amazing this feed smells.
almost wanted to taste it myself! The girls loved it right away. It’s been almost two months since I started using the new formula and everyone is bright and healthy. One thing I’ve noticed is there is much less odor in the coop and run now.
IšverstiShow in original languageI love this feed!! When you open the bag it smells amazing (well for animal feed). The kicker for me is that it last longer. I can buy a 50lb bag of the competitor and it will not last the same length of time as the Nutrena.
Its Just Better. Now with the Plaid Perks Program it is the same price as the “cheaper” name brand. SO. It last longer and cost the same, no brainier!!.
My hens are loving this feed! After two months of no eggs at all (winter molt), I switched my hens to this higher protein feed. I don’t know if it was a coincidence, but they started laying regularly not long after switching to this feed.
I’m happy with the feed. It has a smaller pellet and the hens seem to enjoy that. There is little calcium in this feed because of the “all flock” designation. I am feeding oyster shell free choice.

Best product available and chickens thrive. Much tastier and larger yolks. Shipping can be expensive as well. Best suited for folks that have a large back yard to semi free range and proper experience maybe 8 to 15 hens.
This product works great! My 5 hens were laying 1-3 eggs daily on average. Within a couple of days after feeding this booster, they are laying 3-5 eggs per day! Their combs and wattles are looking more vibrant red now.
This feed is a 16%-protein, high-calcium ration formulated with prebiotics, probiotics and yeast for top-producing laying hens once they reach 18 weeks of age. Purina Layena includes our Oyster Strong System for strong shells.
Oyster shell provides another source of calcium when the hens need it most. Purina Layena Crumbles Premium Layer Feed is formulated with the optimum nutrition for healthy birds and nutritious eggs.
I previously was buying Purina Layena +Omega3. The hens loved it. I switched to this product and quickly noticed two things about it. The pellets are larger. Maybe no big deal although I viewed the previous (smaller) pellets as perhaps being more easily taken down by the hens.
Secondly our egg production went down. Perhaps this is to be expected at first when changing the hens diet? Time will tell if egg production bounces back. I plan to stick with this feed for the foreseeable future since it is more economical.
I do like the Purina brand in general, nice clean pellets and no excessive dust.
I will go out of my way, in the rain, with a broken-down truck, wearing flipflops and my PJ’s to purchase the Purina Layena Crumbles for my chickens. I started on big box store chick crumbles and switched to Purina once they started laying.
One day on the way home I get a call that we are out of chicken food. There was a terrible rain storm going on and I decided it was easier to stop and get a couple of bags of the box store brand than stopping at my local feed store to get the Layena; no big deal right? Grab some ‘layer’ food and hit the door.
Within the first 2 weeks, I gave away the box store brand food and went and got my Purina crumbles. and learnt my lesson. The shells were the first thing we noticed, just collecting them we had more breaks than we had ever had for the entire first year when they were on a strictly Purina diet.
Picking them up you could easily push your thumb through the soft shells; something that never happened to us before. The yokes, although darker and richer than store bought, was something we didn’t notice until after we switched back to the Purina.
they were nowhere near the quality of the Purina yokes. We laughed at ourselves for being such tools, and my laziness to get substandard food. The Purina Crumbles is our goto. from here on out! For the people who will argue that it may cost a little more than some of the other foods – I can only say this, sell a carton of eggs and offset the cost – it’s worth the money, it’s that easy.
Purina Home Grown Layer Pellets or Crumbles provide complete, consistent nutrition for laying hens. This complete feed comes with 16% protein, added vitamins and minerals, and quality nutrients for healthy birds and nutritious eggs.
I have purchased many bags of the Home Grown Purina layer pellet feed. One time I inadvertently ran out and went to a store that was closer to my home only to find out they did not sell the Purina Brand.
I bought another brand of chicken feed, took it home and fed my chickens. Oh my. They would not eat it!!! I guess they are spoiled because the next day, they still would not eat it. So-o-o-o I went to my regular feed store and bought the Purina Home Grown.
Wow!!! When I put this in their feeder, they rushed over and when they realized it was Purina, they really began eating voraciously so I guess I learned my lesson. Now I buy 2 bags at a time so I will not run out of the Purina Home Grown Layer Pellet Chicken feed.
I started using Homegrown products about a year ago and worried the quality wouldn’t be as good as other Purina products; but my chickens have flourished! When I splurged and got Layena for them, they scratched it all out of the feeder and wasted it.
I’m sticking with Homegrown in the future (just supplement with oyster shell for thicker egg shells!).
I have only fed my girls Purina. They are strong, healthy happy and beautiful girls. Everyone that sees them can’t believe how beautiful they look. I have recommended this brand to all of my friends with chickens.

It is made with non-GMO ingredients that have been grown without the use of pesticides and fertilizers. Our layer feeds include the Oyster Strong System, which is an exclusive blend of oyster shell and key vitamins and minerals, like vitamin D and manganese, ensuring a supply of calcium will be available at night when your hens are forming eggs.
When I first got chickens and took classes on their care and nutritional needs I was really overwhelmed with all this different supplements they need to have available : poultry grit, oyster shell, layer feed, scratch grains.
But purina makes it extremely easy to navigate. This feed truly is an all in one feed. My hens have hard eggs with vibrant yolks, their feathers are shiny and soft and I don’t have to worry if their getting the right amount of protein or calcium because Purina does all the work for you.
I knew I wanted an organic feed and once I did my research purina seemed to be the #1 choice and now I see why. its affordable, easy to use, and a complete feed so you don’t need anything else in their pen besides water.
I brought this during the 90 day challenge. During this time period my hen’s have started laying better eggs and i get about 30 eggs a day to where i was only getting around 18 or 20. My hen love it They meet me at the gate to be feed now.
I also feed your beef and rice to my puppies. Dog Chow to my older dogs. Also tried your high protein can food for my dogs. I buy your Strach grains for my peigon. Also buy your rabbit feed for my rabbits.
I even purchased your cat feed. So now all my animal’s are on your feed doing great and healthy. Thanks for making good feed.
Use nothing but Purina. Start our chick out with starter crumble to give them a good start. We then switch to Organic laying Pellets. My son made the mistake and bought another brand but we found out it was a waste off money.
Since he mixed it with a bag of Purina, the chickens scratched the feed onto the floor. The chickens wouldn’t eat it. Evidently they picked out the Purina pellets and the other was left on the floor.
We have never had that happen with the Purina brand.
A 20%-protein nutrient-rich ration that provides top starting, growing and finishing nutrition for a mixed flock of chickens, ducks and geese from hatch until laying age (18-20 weeks) and for turkeys from 8-10 weeks until laying age of 18-20 weeks.
this sunfresh recipe diet takes natural to a whole new level by using only the freshest, highest quality sun-grown grains and plant proteins to give birds the wholesome, healthy goodness and fresh taste they deserve.
made from natural plant-based ingredients free of all animal proteins and fats, it contains all the quality nutrients necessary to raise strong, healthy, beautifully colored chickens, ducks and geese from hatch, through growth and to laying age – all in one bag.
My 5 star rating is for the product itself – I really like the Purina Flock Raiser Pellets vs the Flock Raiser crumbles, I think there is much less waste with the pellets. The other “flock raiser” brand that TSC sells has less protein (16% vs 20% for the Purina) and my girls need the higher protein right now because of the molting stage.
I don’t know why but the Purina Flock Raiser pellets are really hard to find in-store or online and if I do find it availalble online then I end up paying almost half the cost of the order just to ship it.
I don’t know why Purina and TSC don’t work something out so this product can either be sold in stores, or at least shipped to a local TSC store for free.

Great food and great value just wish I could have it delivered too? Please review this for future as I buy 4 every 2 weeks and delivery would be alot better with a bad back:( Same with the Sratch food too!.
Henny Penny Layer Blend Chicken Feed, 8-lb bag; Henny Penny Layer Blend Chicken Food is a great source of essential nutrients. With added calcium and protein, it’s great for chickens that are laying eggs.
It contains an excellent blend of vitamins and minerals to promote overall health. Henny Penny Layer Blend Chicken Food is blended to promote feed efficiency, weight gain and a healthy immune system.
It’s highly digestible with excellent nutrient usability and helps encourage healthy, natural pecking and feeding instincts.
My 3 girls have been fed crumbles their whole life. I bought this thinking they might like it better than the stuff I’ve been getting at the feed store. It certainly looks better! But nope, they follow me around the yard begging for treats when their bowls are still full of feed.
I ended up mixing the 3 small bags of this in with a big bag of feed store crumbles. They eat it a little better now, just picking around the large pellets.
This is a great size of quality “chicken layer” food. I have a European Starling who needs just a little bit of layer food so this size is much better than a giant bag. He only needs about a half cup a month and the shelf life of all feeds is about 6 months.

Great feed. Glad to have this bulk option instead of bags. Feed is 17% protein vs 16% as advertised. glad to have have a bit more protein. If you handle the bag and shipping cost it’s cheaper then the bags.
There are many different types of chicken feed available for layers, and the best type of feed will vary depending on the specific needs of the chickens. Some factors to consider when choosing a chicken feed include the age of the chickens, the breed of chicken, the laying system, and the climate.
