20 Best Cheap Kayak For Fishing (2023 Updated)

Under normal circumstances I probably wouldn’t have left a review. This kayak has to be a speed demon but only if it is purchased in orange. I be this thing can do 300 mph easy on open water in perfect weather conditions.

There is a secret button on the paddle handle that opens up and two compartments under the kayak and exposes a futuristic space propulsion system that will launch you straight into hyperdrive. This Kayak has to be hands down the fastest little speed demon watercraft on the face of the earth.

This thing will get you an Olympic gold medal easy, Paris 2024 be ready. Get your bottles of champagne ready. You know the saying “If you’re not first, you’re last”, you will have movies made about you after purchasing this sweet water racer.

Anyways this is all an assumption since someone stole my credit card info and bought this little orange rocket kayak from Walmart Online. This is the only explanation I could think of for why someone would buy a kayak with a stolen credit card it has to be something extremely special.

If I see this kayak in the Olympics I will know for sure who stole my CC information. Anyways I hope this Kayak was worth it. Cheers to your new found love for water adventures.

Great kayak for young kids first learning how to paddle. I have one for both my 5 and 8 year old. They enjoy being able to have their own kayak and coming along with me for a paddle. I recommend bringing a tow rope for when they get tired and using some common sense while considering the user’s age when planning an outing but overall these kayaks are great for their price and for beginners.

Perfect for introducing kids too kayaking and getting them started. Will be getting my kids something a little nicer once they outgrow these but for now they both love their kayaks.

I purchased this Kayak from Dicks sporting goods a couple weeks back. I was drawn to this kayak because of the features and hearing good things about them. As far as Dicks Sporting Goods I have been very satisfied with their service.

I will say the kayak itself is a neat product but when I received it I was let down that it does not come with a paddle which I had seen some of the sportsman packages come with. Kind of a let down seeing how you pay 2500 for the kayak and you use the paddle to get into deeper water.

My main gripe is with the quality of the kayak. Immediately I found an issue with the bolt inserts where the seat bracket mounts. When they installed the wood for shipping they cross threaded the bolt making it almost impossible to get out and repair.

Today when going to install my fish finder I found the guard near the front of the kayak o my had one bolt holding it and was missing the other bolt. I did contact Old Town and was disappointed with their response of feel free to send pictures.

$2500 dollars is a lot to some people and for that price I feel Old Town really wasn’t worth it. I would suggest going with a better quality Kayak. I know it would cost more money for better quality but it probably would be worth it in this case.

Just pitiful that they can’t even build the kayaks without leaving out parts or damaging them.

I purchased this kayak from Fogh Marine in Toronto and picked it up May 2021. Before this, I used a paddle kayak for 30 hours a week during Spring, Summer and Fall for a total of 700 hours a season. I can say that since I picked up the the Sportsman 106MK, I have put that many hours if not more for the 2021 fishing season.

The kayak is designed super well and great for fishing. During my last week on the lake, my motor started to cut out intermittently, I checked the battery and it was charged. However, after more troubleshooting, I noticed that the connector from the battery box that plugs into the kayak was warped and causing the connection to be loose which would cause the battery to lose connection from the motor.

Luckily, I carry electrical tape on board and was able to get back to shore. I contacted Fogh Marine and inquired about a replacement cable and whether this was a known issue. They were great with service and replacement battery box with new cable was available within 24 hours.

I will be on the water next season and hopefully will not have the same issue. I tried to see if others had this issue and couldn’t find anything and that’s why I am posting this to share my experience.

This kayak is still amazing and the service provided by both Fogh Marine and Old Town is exceptional.

Waited over a year of performance to write this review so it would be a meaningful report. For starters, EcoFishing Shop gets 5 stars, I originally ordered during the pandemic when lead times were quite long, they were very helpful and informative, it wasn’t their fault things were running long.

In fact, when they split my order up into a few different shipments so I could use some of the items with the kayak I had at the time with no questions asked. Now on to the PDL 120, I’ll lead by saying this gets 4.

5 out of 5 stars, the good massively outweighs some of the areas of improvement (especially the PDL drive itself, it’s the best pedal drive in the game with the warranty and customer service to back it), but here are those areas of improvement: 1) The “dry storage” box in the PDL drive is far from dry, it almost always has water in it, even if completely sealed all day, I’ve resorted to putting a small dry bag inside the dry box when I use it, otherwise I typically use it as a trash can for spent soft plastics, 2) The steering system, it’s squishy and the tension between the cables and the rudder needs to be tighter.

Navarre Kayak Fishing sells a bolt that fixes this issue, but I wish it was better out of the box from OT, 3) The steering knob itself is not so great, and the tension knob is not useful at all in my opinion, I would prefer no tension knob and a larger or improved steering knob, the top of the steering knob popped off first week of use, and 4) the front handle is oriented perpendicular to the kayak itself, this is super awkward for carrying purposes but not a devastator, I just think it should be oriented the same direction as the kayak itself.

That’s really it though, this kayak is quality built, tough as nails and the PDL drive is a gamechanger, the instant forward/reverse when you’re fishing docks or you’re pulling a redfish off a school and you need to back down so you don’t spook the school is a huge asset.

The rear storage well is gigantic, I can’t imagine it wouldn’t be suitable for just about anything (within reason) that you want with you on the water for a day of fishing. The sacrificial butt plate has certainly been appreciated when launching, and the stability is insane.

I’m doing full 360s standing up in the cockpit when fighting 30″+ reds and sharks, never once flipped or fallen out.

I had researched pedal fishing kayaks and knew the 120 pedal salt is what I wanted. I saw on-line that Eco Fishing Shop had the kayak available and free shipping! I had some questions about the kayak and the shipping, so have them a call.

It was a Friday, just before they closed for the weekend. I was very pleased with all my answered questions and after we hung up, ordered my kayak. Eco Fishing Shop on-line makes it very simple to order.

That Monday I received an E-Mail from them saying they had processed my order. They also informed me that there might be a little delay in the shipping, but I already knew that from talking with them earlier.

When the kayak arrived, it was well wrapped, so it and everything that came with it were in great shape. After going over the easy to read instructions, everything was together and ready to go in 10 minutes.

While I was waiting for the kayak to be shipped, I realized that I needed a paddle, but didn’t know what size. I called Eco Fishing Shop and after telling them my height, they suggested a paddle that is just perfect.

I absolutely love my Old Town kayak! The only negative thing I have to say is they don’t make a plug to fill the hole, when you raise the peddle unit up and out of the water. I do a lot of fishing around cat tails and in where there is sea grass.

Not having a plug, I get various junk that comes up on the floor area almost every time I go out. Again, other than that, I’m very pleased with my kayak and I highly recommend Eco Fishing shop.

I had been considering purchasing a fishing kayak for about five years. So many choices out there! I’ve had my PDL 132 for about a month, logged a fair amount of time in it and caught a lot of fish to include a few pretty big ones.

Fishing and fighting fish from the seat is very comfortable and fun. Organizing all the gear I need is easy. My cast net fits behind my seat. I removed the carrying handle from a mid sized cooler and replaced it with a triple rod holder using SS screws and 5200.

This fits in the generous bed behind the seat and is secured by the bungee cord system that comes with the kayak. One loop over the handle facing forward and the other over the rod holder, securing the cooler to the kayak but allowing me to easily open the lid of the cooler to put fish in.

I put two rods and a landing net in those rod holders and a third rod goes in one of the other two aft facing integrated rod holders. I found the rails located forward of the seat to be unhelpful so I removed them and laced a bungee cord back and forth between the screws using SS fender washers to pin the cord down.

Now, a tackle box the size of the one that comes with the kayak will easily stow on each side. I fish with one in the port side, two under the seat and use the starboard stowage for pliers, fish grabber and other items I need to get to often.

A boat bag easily slips under the seat that holds other misc gear. The universal transducer mount is not universal :-), but it was easy to drill the holes in the removable plate needed to mount my Lowrance transducer.

Running the wires was incredibly easy and required no hole drilling that resulted in a professional looking install that only took a few minutes. I mounted my chartplotter/FF to the removable plate located to the right of the pedals and stowed the excess data cable neatly in the space underneath.

The power cable is routed under the forward hatch cover not requiring any drilling. Note: when selecting your electronics, avoid a unit with a transducer mounting system that will put the transducer below the plane of the hull or risk damaging it when you drag the craft over anything.

The battery stowage bag is sized to fit a small 12V battery. I purchased a 10ah battery which fits very neatly in there, but found I needed more run time and upgraded to a larger battery placed in a stowage box which I am still problem solving for a better solution to prevent it from sliding around the forward hatch.

The integrated bow carrying handle is great. I run a tie down strap through it when securing my kayak inside my truck and another strap across the middle, through the side carrying handles to finish the aft secure.

This approach is incredibly fast and easy and leaves no doubt that the kayak is not going to slide out of the truck. The aft integrated handles are in the right place and make it easy to get a good purchase on the stern when carrying with another person.

While on the water, I use the opening of the forward carry to hold a small anchor. I route the line through the carrying handle, under the round bar of the pedal unit and tie it off to the carrying handle on the same side.

The anchor line goes in an anchor line bag stowed in the forward hatch. That anchor is used on every trip whether to dig into the beach preventing the kayak from floating away on a rising tide while I’m walking the shore throwing the cast net for bait or holding position near a school of fish.

A factory integrated anchor mounting system on the bow would be a huge plus. I can really scoot with the pedal system even against a strong current and troll for hours effortlessly, which I must say I did not expect.

The rudder friction knob feels a little “economical” and I think there is a better system to be had. The stainless screw is slowly cutting the groove it rests in and I find that I need to remove the chips it cuts to keep the rudder control moving freely.

Perhaps more of a cam type brake would be an improvement? After looking at so many other fishing kayaks over the past few years, when I saw the PDL 132, I knew why I hadn’t purchased a fishing kayak until now.

After several trips, the differences are even more clear. I am extremely happy with my new Old Town and glad I waited for the right one to take to the dance.

I bought a pair of Old Town AutoPilot 136s last fall after debating whether or not to stick with kayaks or get a boat. I started out with a basic paddle kayak about 7 years ago, graduated to a peddle kayak, then traded-up to get a pair of these bad boys.

First, Paddle VA was super easy to order from. I did it online and rented a U-haul truck nearby to bring both of these home with me to NC (they’re hard to find in stock anywhere near me!) Pros: * Tons of space – it’s 13.

5 feet with a ton of deck space in the front and back. You can fit a crate and full-sized cooler in the back or a more compact cooler with some extra room. The front has plenty of space to store a minnow or 5-gallon bucket with a cast net in front of the foot pegs.

* Spot lock is amazing – I’ve had many otherwise nice fishing days ruined by wind. The Minn-kota motors on these things are strong enough to handle winds up to 20 mph without too much of a problem. And the spot lock is a huge advantage if you do much vertical fishing (I do for winter crappie and catfish) or if you just want to hold your spot in the river or lake while casting.

* Very stable – I have never had a kayak that feels as stable as this one. My biggest fish landed in it was a 46 lbs catfish that hit directly under the kayak and it barely budged the kayak or the motor with spot lock engaged.

Cons: HEAVY – This is 125 lbs without any gear. I struggled to figure out how to transport it properly for the first few weeks until I ended-up getting a Malone kayak trailer with the bunker attachments.

You will definitely need a truck bed w extender or trailer to move this kayak around. Insufficient built-in fish finder features – if you’re going to sink at least $4-$5K into a kayak, you’ll probably want to add a fancy fish finder at some point, too.

There are pre-drilled holes to run the wiring from inside the kayak to the console, but they’re too small to accommodate some of the bigger attachments / cables for the more advanced units. There’s also a spot just forward of the trolling motor to mount the transducer under the kayak, but I also had problems with the motor hitting the transducer, which I ended-up just mounting on the sides.

Dry box catches chair – It’s a mild annoyance, but it does keep everything dry. And stinky. Make sure after you’ve fished and handled the remote all day, to leave the dry box open while in storage so that you can let it air out.

Overall, I’m very pleased with this kayak and look forward to taking it on a number of fishing trips in the future!.

I bought my Auto Pilot 136 last summer and can’t say enough good things about it. It does a great job operating while fishing in a moving river, and makes those long trips across the lakes effortless.

I’ve had issues with the spot lock under or next to bridges but it has never been a large margin of error. Weight is an issue being solo but with the correct gear it’s no problem. The storage area is like the trunk of a car, definitely great for all day fishing.

This kayak immensely increases my fishing time while on the water, leaving me plenty of room to stand and fish, not feeling cluttered by fishing and camera equipment. It’s very well balanced for me even at 6’3” tall.

There are some issues like the drainage in the cup holders, but nothing that affects my fishing or time on the water. If kayak fishing is what you like, and you are out there a lot, it’s most certainly worth the $.

Just received via shipping. Can’t wait to try it out. I have owned several kayaks so I was looking for one with specifics I wanted and this one had most. First is sit on top. sit in boats are hard to get out of gracefully, especially for an old big guy! But I’ve watched young and fit adults struggle as well.

Lol The multi foot rest positions are another personal preference. I have owned kayaks with adjustable foot rest. they are not easy to adjust from a seated position and you tend to adjust your feet often on a decent trip.

I really wanted the side mounted adjustable rod holder also and this is the only boat I found designed this way. If you like slow trolling fishing then a center mount rod holder makes it difficult to do.

Plus you usually have to lean forward a bit to reach the rod with a center mount. The side mount is an easy reach for a quick set. I’ll be pushing the weight limit at 275 but sit on tops won’t swamp or sink.

The width of the hull looks much wider than any of my previous boats so that will only improve stability quite a bit! Eager to dirty it up with some fish scales and slime!.

I bought this Kayak about 9 years ago and although I haven’t used it for a few years, it doesn’t disappoint. Very sturdy and great for small lakes. Have used it fishing, since that’s what it is intended for, but mostly just for cruising and enjoying the scenery.

It is a bit heavier kayak, but that’s what also makes it more sturdy. Easily holds someone who is 225lbs with no problems at all. Customer service has been great. I lost one of the hatch covers and looked for a replacement online, but couldn’t find one that size.

Contacted Lifetime and they are able to ship one out to me. super easy and quick. Even after being in outside storage for 3 years, a little bit of cleaning and it’s as good as new. Can’t wait to get it back in the water.

Fantastic kayak. Very customizable but basic in design. Great grab and go vessel. Decent primary stability but great secondary stability. Easy to stand and site fish even going through smaller rapids on a fairly quick moving river.

Was a bit turned off by the lack of dry storage originally, but found that once i was on the water it was perfect for me. Dont have to manuver to secure items in a hatch. Can just use a dry bag and have PLENTY of deck space for it to sit and remain out of the way.

Boats scupper holes and the channels comnecting them do a great job at keeping the deck dry. Plenty of room for coolers and gear as the seat is trimmable. Even room for a child if you choose to bring them.

For me, GREAT kayak and was not disappointed once i got her out. Added the 360 seat to it and made every part of it more awesome. Easy to turn and access gear, fish banks without turning th vessel, and helps getting in and out easier.

I absolutely love my new F10. Received it with just a few minor scratches. When I first sat in it for the first time, I was upset because I could not leave the doc without tipping it over. It was because the seat was to high and to far back, the whole area behind me filled with water.

So I flipped the seat bracket which dropped the seat about 7 inches, and moved it closer to the middle of the kayaK. It worked great and off I went.

I would recommend it to someone who doesn’t go kayaking very often, and in very calm waters. We took it out on the river and one of the paddles broke midway into it, and then we took on a ton of water when paddling upstream because it sits so low in the water.

The other issue I have and the reason I only give it three stars is the fact that it was scheduled to arrive on the 9th, according to eBay. I finally got a call on the 11th to tell me they didn’t have the one I had ordered (only an hour from my house) and would I be willing to go with this one? I decided to go for it since we wanted it for a trip that weekend.

I was told they would put a rush on it, and it was on the truck. I didn’t get it for almost another week and a half, totally forcing us to change plans, and then our first experience wasn’t great. Thankfully, we had a spare paddle in one of our other kayaks.

I bought this at Tractor Supply last week. With the two storage ports, it seems more like an old Tamarack than a Tioga, but who knows how product naming works. Anyway, my kayak seems to have been stored outside.

kind of dirty, the attached paperwork stuck together, torn, and mostly unreadable. Upon inspection, I found the o-ring inside the drain port is cracked in multiple places. Doesn’t seem the 2022 manufacture date on the certificate of origin makes sense.

And the included paddle is odd; the blades are strangely contoured and there are no grips or drip guards, so I got completely soaked in calm water.

I was excited to see that the kayak rental on our vacation had these available since I have been watching them all summer. We rented them for 2 days, and between our whole family probably kayaked more than 20 miles around a lake.

We have a short bed pickup, so transporting is difficult, and we also have limited storage space, but do not want inflatables. The Lifetime Hydros is a good value, especially at Farm and Fleet’s sale prices.

All 3 of my kids, ages 10-16 were able to take turns. The 16 year old was also able to kayak comfortably with a 5 year old in front of her, both wearing lifevests of course. A little water does get in through the scupper holes, but these things are stable to get in and out of and to row.

The only downside is that they are not very fast on the water. The fastest I was able to go downstream on the lake was about 6 or 7 mph if Strava is accurate. It felt slow, and they don’t really track the straightest.

For the price, they are a good buy in spite of that, they just won’t win any races unless they are all the same model. There’s nothing better than floating on water without the noise of an engine or smell of gasoline when you want peace and quiet.

Extremely light kayak. Paddle is the only reason i down graded it from a 5 star. However i bought a new one. i bought it for my younger brother so he could kayak fish with me. we’ve had a lot of fun and he loves it.

Our favorite part about this kayak is the weight. It is so light and maneuverable. We set the hook like we on a fiberglass boat and havent tipped it yet. If youre debating on kayak fishing or kayaking in general buy this one.

if you want a slight upgrade minus the benefit of it being so light weight look at the tioga angler. it has a better paddle and i love it.

I purchased topwater pdl in 2021, there was a long lead time regarding demand that got stretched as shipping became a nightmare. The order was delayed by over 2 months beyond the estimated shipping date.

Caleb from eco fishing got involved during this delay to try and resolve the issue. Unfortunately it was out of his control but it showed me that this company has an owner that will take interest in an upset customer.

Ultimately eco fishing took care of me and got the kayak to me just in time for fall fishing! Thank you Caleb from eco fishing 5-star customer service! I took time to write this review because I really wanted to know the product before writing.

I do a lot of river fishing and was really worried about hidden structures impacting the pdl drive. I must say I connected with a couple rocks/branches and no issues or damaged sustained. When facing upstream, a light pedal and locked rudder will keep me in place as my fellow kayakers are paddling to the shore for stationery fishing or 1 cast then paddle to right their kayak.

I spent a lot of days in a sit on top ascend kayak and the topwater blows it away. In the lakes using the pdl is probably obvious that you can run parallel with the shore and target the structures for the hidden bass! I feel really confident standing in this kayak as well, it’s really balanced.

A new fishing season is staring at me and I’m ready to get back on the water with this amazing kayak. The wait and delays was totally worth it and would wait again if I had too:).

I bought this mainly for fly fishing because it seems that every time I find a nice fly fishing spot the wind keeps blowing me over where I want to fish. So now I can backpedal and hold my position while fly fishing without having to drop the fly rod to paddle backwards.

Also, I have emphysema yet I can pedal this along at a nice clip while trolling a lake or pond at 2 to 3 mph with no problem. At 12 feet it is a big kayak and a mite on the heavy side but that all contributes to its excellent stability.

I’m in my late 60’s and not as agile as I use to be so I wanted a really stable kayak. If you are a young pup I’m sure you could fly fish standing up with no problem but I don’t have the balance any more.

However, I have tested its stability by standing up and its a rock solid fishing platform and wish I had better balance to take advantage of it. Mounting a fish finder or rod holder is a snap with its accessory rails.

It is also a bit pricey but like the old saying goes, “you get what you pay for” and this kayak is definitely worth the price. You will never regret buying it. Old Town Canoe makes great products and over the years I’ve bought a couple canoes and this kayak and have been extremely happy with every purchase.

I bought the Old Town sportsman 106 because I was looking for a kayak of good quality stability and fishability. I ordered the kayak from Eco fishing shop July 18th of 2020 and was supposed to receive it NLT mid sept, but did not receive the kayak until December 7th.

I understand that Eco fishing is at the mercy of the manufacturer, and Old town was behind with manufacturing of the kayak so with that said my complaint is that Eco fishing shop did not do a very good job of keeping me posted on the delay.

When I received the kayak, the protective plastic rap and shipping material were ripped and torn in several places, and the bottom of the kayak had several scratches, I don’t think this effects the overall performance of the kayak and I don’t hold this agains Eco fishing shop, once again I understand that they are at the mercy of the shipping company, but definitely a disappointment and a hug problem with ordering anything on line.

I am disappointed in the quality of the kayak cosmetically. I ordered the first light patter and there is a very large section on the back of the kayak and several small areas were it looks like the die did not mix with the Polyethylene, although this dose not effect the overall performance of the kayak, I can say that if I was purchasing the kayak in person at a retail store Instead of ordering on line, I would have passed on this kayak simply because this would have made me question the quality of the rest of the kayak.

I honestly believe that if a retail store had ordered this kayak to sell out of a store, they would have returned it to Old town and asked for a replacement. I have purchased several old town products in the past, and I truly am a fan of old town products, I sincerely hope that they are not sacrificing the quality of there products simply because they are behind in production and to meet demand.

Over all the kayak did perform very well on the water, I took the kayak out on the lake the day after receiving it and it lived up to its reputation, it was very stable, comfortable to fish out of and tracked very well.

This is it! The high performance Dagger boat that maintains the predictable forgiveness of the Nomad with the performance of the Mamba and the new high stern and bow rocker to boot. To start off I will say if your a dagger fan you will love this boat.

The outfitting and comfort/paddler position are what you would expect of any Dagger boat. I have paddled a large Newmad and a Mamba 8. 6 for years, so these are the boats I will be comparing to. The boat edges similar to a Mamba giving you lots of control and stays on line.

the rececced edges, as with the Mamba, are forgiving in nature while allowing you to get on edge when needed. The high bow rocker keeps you on top of features giving the boat a totaly different feel.

it boofs really well and does not get buried in holes. The stern shape and rocker acceleates you out of boils and holes. This in itself is much different than the Mamba and the Nomad. The boat is easy to roll.

I did not not notice it being either harder nor easier than the Mamba or Nomad. With the Mamba I have confidence in staying on line and knowing that I can get the boat exactly where I want it to be. The downside is that it doesn’t boof as well as the Nomad.

Also with the low volume of the Mamba I worry about running bigger holes as the boat subs out and you are more likely to get beatered. The Nomad is a 4X4 that I can run bigger rapids in and have confidence that the boat will boof well and get me through bigger holes without getting subbed out.

The Nomad also has a very fogiving nature as it has a ton of primary stability. This is helful when you land a little off camber on a boof or get thrown off by an unexpected side current. The down side to the Nomad is that it doesnt have distinct edges so it tends to wander and get pushed around by boils and cross currents.

You really have to drive the Nomad to hit micro features and to get into eddies. The Code gives you the best of both worlds. The boat has a ton of primary stability so it tends to be very forgiving coming off of drops or gettting pushed by a side currents.

It also stays on line as well if not better than the mamba. I say this because the boat stays up on top of the water. Its a different feeling as both the Nomad and Mamba sit down in the water or at least thats how it feels when you are paddling them.

I Boat Chery Creek (Upper Tuolumne) in California often and I haven’t had a chance to get on it with the Code. I have been padddling my local run (Goodwin Canyon on the Stanislaus) with it and the boat has been great.

There is a 100 yard long rapid (Mr Toads) that is full on with several different laterals and cross currents. With the Code I was able to stay up on top of the features and use the laterals, with lots of control, to get right where I wanted to be.

There are other rapids with basalt bedrock that have crazy hydraulics and boils. I was able to ride up, drive over, and through all of these features with out getting blown around. I also got to feel how the boat really accelerates through them and out of holes instead of getting bogged down.

I would say for someone wanting to get out of a Mamba or even a beginner boater that this boat will be fine. Still easy to roll and still forgiving. It just wont be as much fun if you want to do bow enders.

It will also perform way better and give you more confidence in boofing and running bigger holes. For someone comming from a Newmad or Nomad. This thing has way more performance without sacraficing stability.

It tracks better, cuts into eddies better, and the rocker gets you up and over features better. I can’t wait to get this bad boy up on some bigger class V.

Pretty interesting boat! It’s both turny and fast. A bit on the wider side. Doesn’t feel like a race boat at all given the width. Gives it a fair amount of primary stability. Nothing remarkable stood out to me regarding secondary stability.

Predictable handling. Boofs well. Having only paddled it a few days I’m still getting used to it. All my runs have been more big water style. Haven’t had it in a Creek yet. As with all the Dagger plastic recently this stuff is SOFT! Gouges deeply very easily.
