Chain for single speed is a chain that is designed to work with a single speed bike. This type of chain is typically narrower than a standard chain, and it has a special link that allows it to be used with a single speed bike.
The roots of the American bicycle components manufacturer SRAM go back up in the year 1987. The first product was the twist grip shifters ‘Grip shift’, which especially at the beginning of the 90s on mountain bikes was very popular.
Through various acquisitions of other brands such as the German manufacturer Sachs or RockShox and Truvativ, SRAM could gradually extend its product portfolio. Today, in addition to Shimano and Campagnolo SRAM considered full range provider in terms of drive and as drivers of innovation in the field of circuits.
SRAM chains have been working well with the “PowerLink” joining link. It used to be this chain ran only one direction, I cannot find that specification anymore, and don’t have to concern myself anymore to which direction the chain is installed.
No failures in over 20 years now ( I am a strong 200 pound body builder with a former bike racing career and highly skilled) BUT I do not do sprint training anymore, so this chain takes the stress of my out of the saddle climbing and hard acceleration, but not the 100% intensity of sprint training.
Sprint training for high skilled and strong cyclists require the strongest components available in cranks, wheels, chains. so this chain I have not tested to the extremes.
I wasn’t expecting such a quiet and long lasting chain at this price point. Actually I expected just the opposite. I first noticed how quiet the chain was when I went on the 1st ride and was surprised that it stayed that way a couple hundred miles.
I relubed the chain and it went totally quiet again. At the 500 mile mark I removed the chain for a complete cleaning and lube. I checked the lateral flex, compared to an unused chain as well as the stretch.
Both measurements have negligible signs of wear. I bet I get 5K miles out of this chain and will be replacing with an identical Sram PC-1130. Absolute recomend!.
Replaced a Shimano chain with this as this is what came up when looking on the Halfords site. Read the specs and it said it was compatible. Easy to fit and the gear changes are smoother than previously.
The quick release link is a bonus that allows for easy removal for cleaning the chain. One thing I found was when measuring the length vs the old chain, you might need include an extra link as the quick release attaches attaches to two inner links.
Wider between the outer plates than a 10 speed chain this 8 speed chain was just the solution to a slow shifting 10 speed cassette fitted to an old style seven speed Shimano free hub and derailleur. With 8 speed shifters and the largest (physically) tooth cog and a mid range cog deleted from the 10 speed cassette (to make my 8 speed bicycle fit the old, narrow, hub and frame of the original 7-speed bike), the shifts are now just snick, snick, snick! The front triple works now too! 11-34 by eight using 10 speed cogs in back and 28,38,48 seven speed triple chain rings up front are a delight to shift.
I did add a vintage Shimano Shark Fin bought off eBay to prevent accidental chain suck with the front bail-out chain ring. Kept the old girl out of the land fill.
I had to remove a few links from this one and I thought my old motorcycle chain breaker would do the job, but it didn’t. I had to grind off a rivet to remove the unnecessary links. Other than that the chain is great! I replaced it along with the front chainring and cassette and the bike rides nearly silently.
This chain is perfect for my daughter’s norco bike. Easy to size and replace. My issue is with the included master link. All previous chains that I have done, the master link required some effort to set the chain links into each other (if that makes sense).
This made them nice and solid, but still removable. With these master links they basically just slide, and there’s no mechanical detent or anything holding them. It’s very easy to pull the master link apart.
I don’t know if it’s just mine, but it definitely does not feel very solid. Still a good chain, but pay attention to the master link. Could be an isolated case.
The KMC e1 Chain is suitable for single-speed riding styles such as eBike, track bikes, and internally geared hubs. Maximum durability for eBike usage with unparalleled rigidity and strength. Added chamfering for smooth operation.
Double X bridge shape for precise gear shifting. Mushroomed riveting provides high pin power. Inner plate chamfering allows for expeditious shifting.
The chain is good quality but too short. I had a new build I bought it for and didn’t have any prior sizing to go off of. The 116 link was the only option for my 10 speed but it ended up being to short.
I needed 119 links. When I tried to install this chain it binded my derailleur and bent the hangar. I had to order and install a new hangar and then make a new chain myself that was longer and 119 links.
I might have gotten away with the 11 speed chain which is offered in 118 links but I didn’t want to chance having the same situation again. 119 links was perfect for me and I wish they offered these longer so you can simply cut them down.
I had to get two 116 links and combine them with two master links.
I always prefer to work with those chains. You have a lot of choices and the link is the best innovation since pedal/cleats, integrated brake/shifters and indexed shifting! You can always find a KMC when in need, sometimes I get a super light, sometimes I get a budget one.
They all work the same. For the record, I use a 9 speed wide on my 8 speed MTB (Shimano drivetrain), I use a 10 speed chain on a 9 speed road Shimano road bike and I use a 12 speed on my Campagnolo 12 Chorus road bike.
Chains have a tradeoff between efficency (reduced rolling resistance) and longevity/durability. And then there’s price. The KMC X12 costs less than high-end chains from Shimano and SRAM, but it’s less durable.
At the same time it’s as efficent as the high-end models and more efficent than the mid-range. Pick your posion.
I am a former track racer and still ride fixed-gear a lot on the road – and have used everything from the most expensive Japanese Racing chains to cheap bmx chains. These chains are somewhat expensive, but are durable and they run quiet and smooth due to the bushing construction.
(I also like the quick link connector). While I do not have scientific data to back this up, with chain wax and these chains, the drive system seems much more efficient and quiet.
Good chain that fit my single speed cruiser bike and I liked the easy-to-use connecting link with the outside clip that required no specialty tools. Just needed to remove extra links to make the chain fit my bike, which I could do with a small punch and vise from my tool shop.
Every bit as good, if not better, than the original chain.
I ordered the x-wide black. I wanted to try out a heavy duty chain. It’s not black, the color is actually gun metal. The chain is extremely wide and you should only use a name brand chain tool. My tool got trashed by this chain trying to remove the pin.
My fault for not buying a Park tool. A master link would have been the way to go and I would have actually liked this product besides not being the described color. I won’t be buying the waste of $15 again.
PROS: Durable CONS: Heavy, Difficult To Install BEST USES: Road Biking, BMX.
Shimano’s Nexus chain is designed for use with their internally geared hubs but works well, and has a great style, for any comfort singlespeed. Stylish oval link plate design and anti-corrosion treatment for longer life.
The Shimano 105 CN-HG601, 11 Speed Chain is perfect chain link for my Shimano 105 5800 road bike groupset. Hard wearing, robust and strong enough to handle all the power I can pedal through the cranks.
Ultra smooth shifting and precision indexing in the cassette sprockets leaves me no hesitation that I can recommend this chain for its sheer smooth shifting performance and value for money compared to other high end 11 speed chains I use that in balance, price per link can marginally match the performance and durability of a more expensive chain.
Perfect for indoor training and second bike or winter bike scenario where parts expenditure is a consideration. Keep it clean and lubricated it should last a lot longer and give many miles of enjoyment through the wheelset.
In all in a winning combination. Its real value lays in the miles it repays you back in and sometimes riding a journey over the horizon and beyond that can be priceless and in this you can rely on its build quality and therefore worth investing in.
I live in the middle of nowhere, center of everywhere. So having to replace bike parts can be a hassle. I can always trust the people at Cambria bike for good prices, quality parts, prompt responses and speedy ship times.
This is the same chain I’ve been using since I picked up my 2017 Giant Trance 2. No issues with chain snap, ever. Replaced due to stretching which is normal and to the ones newer to the sport, IT IS A MUST!! A stretched chain can trash your drivetrain way before its time.
I had bought a chain off an auction site for the a cheaper price than Halfords and paid for same day delivery. when the chain arrived I fitted it and rode off to work. within minutes the chain had snapped in several places and I was left to walk to work.
The next day I popped into Halfords and bought this one. The superior quality is obvious, I should never have wasted my money on the other one.
Picked it up in-store from the bike counter and bike shop employee who was super helpful. Wiped it down before install to remove some of the oily residue from manufacturing. Lubricated it later with chain lube before installing, which was a cinch.
Had to remove about 4 links to make it fit my 7 speed. So far, so good, and no complaints at all.
This chain is extremely well built and exhibits the same quality that we have learned to rely on over several decades and expect from the all the well proven chain KMC products. The price is simply amazing for the quality! We use KMC bike chains on many of our bike designs from beginner bikes to advanced 27 speed bicycles including several of our Cross Country, Road, Mountain and Electric Bike designs (it is extremely likely they will preform excellently on BMX bikes yet that is not currently part of our professional experience in the cycling industry so we reserve our comment BMX bike chains at this time, yet we are confident the BMX products will include the same quality of KMZ that our experience of several decades have pedaled to coast us thru decades of reliability and confidence).
Enjoy and ride in confidence with KMZ in your drive chain.

I increased my chain ring to a 52 tooth and my old chain was too short for this so this KMC chain was purchased. KMC chains are decent and a very nicely packaged product with the quick link parts in a separate compartment.
The quick link is a snap together type so only has two parts – for a short time I thought I had dropped the retaining clip but there isn’t one with this chains joining link. There were instructions supplied but of course I didn’t read them! I’m not sure if the joining link can be safely reused if it is opened up again in the future but this is a good chain at a decent price and looks pretty crazy in gold finish.
Came coated in a not excessive, sticky factory lube on the chain but I understand (so I’ve been told) you are supposed to remove this as it is for chain storage protection and then relube the chain with the chain lube of your choice.
I’ve got to be honest, I just fitted the chain as it was supplied and it has been great so far. I would buy this item again.
Okay, this product was recommended to me by a bicycle guru whom I trust. So I was expecting something of higher quality that would provide years of trouble free service. Since the chain is yet new and has only seen limited service so far, rating it’s longevity or resistance to corrosion, (two of the advertised features of this model chain), would be impossible with such a limited service time.
I can comment however as to it’s ease of installation and the performance on my bicycle after 100 miles of use. The chain as delivered was too long for my application. This is common-and many chains require shortening or “sizing” to provide proper fitment to any given application.
My bicycle is a Fuji Nevada 2. 0. It’s original chain was rusty and actually failed due to the corrosion issue, so my intention was to obtain a corrosion resistant chain that would last and not fail from fatigue stress or rust.
So to shorten the chain I employed a chain breakdown or chain link disassembly tool. It’s an inexpensive tool that has worked in the past but when trying to apply pressure to one of the link pins on the appropriate link to shorten the chain my tool wasn’t strong enough to force the pin through.
I reverted to a tried and true method of grinding the mushroomed link pin head then using my chaintool the pin more readily pushed through the link and I was able to obtain the correct length. The chain was very strong and durable were it’s disassembly was concerned as proven by the fact that my tool was inadequate to push the pin out without the additional removal of material.
This additional work I felt necessary because I was concerned over galling of the inner race when the pin was forced though the link, possibility creating a poor bearing surface within the inner race of the removed pivot pin.
Also after the process of shorting the chain was complete the chain exhibited no ill effects. It was still pliable, supple, but not at all negatively effected by my mechanical processes. The supplied master link worked like a charm.
It reported an audible “click” when installed and was easy to use. The chain runs very quietly and shifts without hesitation both up and down. I’m happy with the product and would recommend it to anyone looking for a reasonably priced fix to an aging drive system.
KMC X10SL has been the preferred chain for my road bike for several years. It shifts smoothly, quietly, and without hesitation. It is lighter than other chains I have used in the past. The most value for me is the chain’s durability.
I systematically ride 20-30 miles a day, or about 10,000 miles a year. This chain lasts consistently 5,000 miles for me, at which point I change the chain for a new one. The long mileage I get from the chain may be facilitated by the fact that I normally ride with quite high cadence (90-100 rpm) since I am now 64-year-young and no longer a gear masher.
I also clean and lube the chain regularly with the oil appropriate to the climate; I used wet oil in Chicago and now use dry oil in Phoenix. When I purchased a new bike with Ultegra gruppo a couple years ago, I gifted the original Shimano Ultegra chain to a friend and put KMC X10SL on my Scott CR1 PRO.
This alone is a statement of quality of this chain. Hope good people in Taiwan making this chain will not get greedy and keep the price at the reasonable level. Thank you!.
Made in Japan NJS Approved Gold and Black Single Speed 384 Grams 106 links 9. 3 mm 1/2″ x 1/8″ Compatibility Bolt Type Master Link Included (Strongest) Made in Japan This chain will fit 1/8″ or 3/32″ singlespeed drivetrains.
I have been riding fixed gear since 2010 and my main problem was that I was destroying chains within months. I am pretty big, like 198 lbs and skidding and track standing with average chains makes them stretch like hell.
Well not this one. This will endure at least ten times longer than a cheaper chain. One of my friends recommended this a while ago. This is my third chain since and I would never use any other setup for my bikes.
Definitely a 5 star product, can’t recommend it enough!.
Benefit from the KMC fit. This chain is designed to work flawlessly with single speed components. The KMC Missing Link makes chain fitting a much calmer affair with no need to line up a fiddly pin. Replacement KMC quick links are also much easier to fit and carry with you on a ride than a pin meaning less time spent faffing by a field and more time on the road or in the mountains.
The Ventura 112 Link Bicycle Chain for Single Speed bikes can get your bike running smooth. The chain includes a connection link for quick installation. Ventura cockpit products are a great value to spruce up your current bike.
Unless you are closely related to “Hercules”, you cannot secure the master link with simple hand pressure (as described in the instructions). The master link fastener is concave. You want the cavity facing outward (away from the chain) when you install it.
As described in the instructions you will slip the larger and over one of the post on the master link and then the smaller in you will “snap” over the other post. I found this absolutely impossible do with my thumbs, as described in the instructions.
I had to use channel locks with a 1/4″ drive 7/32″ socket over the master link to force it to snap over the post. This worked rather well. Trying to do this with your thumbs is a lost cause. I also needed a chain separation tool, since I needed to shorten this chain by 2 links.
I have 12 speed bike with a Shimano derailer. This was the cheapest chain I could find. As others have mentioned, this is a KMC (Kmart) product.
Budget priced KMC brand of bmx chain Which I found is good for the price of which I had payed for. My bikes are mostly using this exact chain for your average use. KMC also sell premium version which I also use for competitions or display bikes.
So yeah no problems with this brand As always tho. Check out the prices before ordering Sometimes the companies selling them offer discounts for multiple sales. 4 out of 5.
No instructions included. FIRST you need to shorten the chain to your required length by driving out a chain pin, I used a drift and hammer with a socket on the side where the pin exits. When you look at the master link used to reconnect the chain you will notice the pins on the link are bent outward.
When you connect the chain first put master link pins thru each end of chain, then install the female connector with the slot. It slides on by hand the correct way, if yoy need pliers its reversed. Now you need to get the pin from the master link into the sloted hole of the female part by bending the chain sideways with your hands so the pins squeeze together (actually become straight) you can hear it snap when its in place, double check by squeezing with pliers.
The chain is the competitive heart of any track bike or race BMX and the KMC X1SL chain features all the strength necessary to transfer power from the pedal to the metal. This chain features an optimized strength to weight ratio using only the minimum necessary material with chamfered and slotted link plates, and hollow pins.
An 18 chain that is well suited to the rigours of track racing. Crafted from a special heat-treated nickel-plated steel it offers great tensile strength. Key Features Special heat-treated nickel-plated steelLink Size 12 x 118Thickness 8.
This chain is very well made and good value for money. However the quick link does not work with my 3 speed sturmey archer Brompton as the shields on the hub and jockey wheel catch on it. Luckily it was too long and i had to shorten it anyway but ended up having to use a chainbreaker to rejoin it rather than using the quick link.
I purchased this chain to replace a brand new ill-fitting Izumi V gold and black NJS chain on my all chrome Soma Rush track bike. This chain fits better , is a whole lot smoother, a lot thinner overall and matches my totally chromed out Rush making it an eye-catcher wherever I ride.
Equipped with 112 links, this KMC chain gives a dependably durable showing, all year round thanks to its anti-corrosion coating. Fit for use with KMC 5-6-speed, non-index derailleur systems, a smooth and trusted experience is assured as you cycle through the city.
The Vuelta chain is 1/2×1/8 and 112 links for single speed bicycles. It features an anti-rust design. All chains are made with our own exclusive tooling and have been tested around the world to make sure they meet all standards for reliability performance and quality.
IT WASN’T BETTER THAN I EXPECTED. IT WAS JUST AS GOOD. I WAS LOOKING FOR A GOOD EBAY BUY ON A SACHS-SEDIS CHAIN BECAUSE I’VE BEEN USING ONE I BOUGHT BACK IN THE 1980s AND IT’S AWESOME. LUBRICATION IS KEY, OF COURSE.
Chain looks great. No instructions in the write up that says you have to have one or more special tools to remove the old one and put the new on on. Otherwise would give 5 stars. Looks to be good for the beach.
I bought this chain to match up to the Chrome on a bike on building for show I don’t believe his chain would be very good for hard riding it’s made for Aesthetics it is very good and very inexpensive thank you.
The Cult half link chain features a Teflon coating with engraved Cult logos and is designed to help dial in the rear end length on frames with short dropouts. Rounded side plates are compatible with 8T and larger drivers.
After some struggle I managed to get this chain fitted. Im used to seeing half link included but that wasnt case with this chain. If I add one link my rear brake grab my tyre even on maximum extended mode, if I remove one link I can barely put chain on and my rear tyre is totally recessed.
I guess I could remove bolts from my axle and chain tension gonna keep my tyre in place. This weird pictured link have extra long bar (its like 1. 5x size of other bars) it stick out a lot to one side and after clamping it together this one link is not as flexible as it should.
I wont leave bad rating because I assessed I just never experienced this kind of chain and Im more than certain I just assembled it poorly but who know. Work after some struggle so Im happy.
The SALT Lite Classic chain is made of steel that benefits from a chrome treatment for appearance and durability. Thanks to the specific internal and external design of these robust plates, it offers very high tensile strength in addition to weight reduction.

The Salt AM 510H chain is a heavy-duty 100 link chain made of chromed steel which makes the chain strong and durable. On each individual link is an embossed Salt logo. Use it for a strong chain setup on most Freestyle BMX bikes.
Some common chain sizes for single speed bikes include 1/8″, 3/32″, and 1/2″. The most common type of chain used on single speed bikes is the 1/2″ pitch chain, which is also the type of chain most often used on BMX bikes.
