Best Books For 4Th Graders To Read (2024 Updated)

I remember this being a great book when I was a kid, so I thought my child in grade 4 might like it. I read a couple of chapters and had to stop. It hasn’t aged well and I wouldn’t consider buying it again or recommending it to anyone.

I accidentally read the “Fudge” series out of order. This is the first in the series of books Judy Blume writes about a boy named Peter and his annoying (but hilarious) little brother nicknamed Fudge.

I ended up reading this book after reading most of the other Fudge books, which thankfully didn’t make that much of a difference. I thoroughly enjoyed “Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. ” The main character, Peter, is struggling with being the older brother to a little boy who drives him nuts.

The interacting dialog between all the characters is wonderfully well written. I remember saying and thinking things just like Peter when I was his age. The way Blume has perfectly captured the mindset of a fourth grader makes for enjoyable reading for kids and adults as well.

I sat there laughing out loud at so many of Peter’s and Fudge’s experiences and conversations. Overall, I just love the fun and innocence of this book. It takes me back to my childhood and I relive some happy memories, and it also helps me remember the mindset of my own children.

I bought this for my 10 year old daughter as she asked for it, having heard part of it at school. She read it in 2 days flat(which is unheard of for her !) She ate it while eating and I had to take it off her so she would sleep.

In short she absolutely loved it and would recommend it to anyone of her age !.

Spectrum Reading is a resource I have used in my classroom for years. I’m so happy to have a new copy of this resource tied to the current state standards. It provides practice in many reading skills/strategies.

I love having this as a resource for extra practice, review, and quick/easy assessing. I’ve used Spectrum resources for years in my classroom, and I know I can depend on them for exactly what I need for reading practice! There are around 75 passages in this book with comprehension and skill practice for students to complete.

This is great for teachers so they can easily assess student understanding of a cold read passage and show mastery of skills taught. I highly recommend this Spectrum Reading resource and all other Spectrum resources! I do wish there was an index that was available for teachers to easily find passages that practiced each standard/skill.

This would make it easier for teachers to find practice for each skill they are working on quickly without having to look through all the passages. I participate in the Brand Ambassador Program for Carson Dellosa and have received this product for free to review.

I really enjoy all of the Spectrum book products that I have. This one is no exception. I like the variety of work and activities in it, along with the topics that are covered to support the 4th grade curriculum.

While my son is an avid reader – and at a high level – he loathes doing comprehension work and having to make connections on demand. This series has been great for helping us work on these skills.

GIVING YOUR 4TH GRADER A BOOST I have homeschooled my children, foster children for 15+ years and have now taken on the loving commitment of homeschooling my 3 grandsons. This is not a work book or teacher guide.

Its short easy to ready format provides a parent or care giver the insight to the core knowledge of basic education. And the fundamentals of a good 4th grade education. I have built my lessons plans around the content of these books.

Which include language arts, geography, world civilization, American Civilization, fine arts, mathematics, and natural sciences. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book or any in the series especially for the struggling student, home schooled or not.

I really like this entire series of books. I am a homeschool parent and this is my main textbook. I supplement with workbooks that I find in Staples, Wal-Mart and Parent-Teacher stores. I started with ‘What Your Kindergartner Needs to Know’ and now I am using ‘Fourth Grader’.

This book discusses all subjects of a classic school education. English, Science, Math, History/Geography, Art and Music. Some suggested activities are included. I feel that the author’s desire to achieve a ‘standard’ of knowledge for each grade level is a good goal.

I find that my son is covering similar material at the same time as his friends that go to public school and this is good in our case. I definitely recommend this series to anyone who does not want to purchase an expensive curriculum.

Please note–the picture is of the newer publication of this book and not the 1994 printing. It is, however, a good purchase for homeschooling parents as it tells everything you should be teaching your children.

I would have given 5 stars except for the fact the inside content is not as nice as the newer printings and it’s not as user friendly as some of the others. I would, however, recommend it as it’s very helpful to have.

I buy E. D. Hirsch, Jr’s books every year. The last being What Your Fourth Grader needs to know. I love these books, they’re very informative and have been very helpful with our home-education. Each subject covered is well written and easy to understand.

I was getting them at the library but needed to refer to them so often, I decided to buy my own.

I’ve used this in the past in homeschooling my children and wanted to have a copy on hand for reference. Great series!

I absolutely love this movie, it’s so heartwarming and genuine. It is sad and will make you cry but it has a great storyline and makes you think differently about people because not everyone is the same.

I would know because I had a child that had a genetic disorder but he unfortunately didn’t survive 2 days but he was one of the best person in the world I could’ve ever met and brought joy to so many.

People shouldn’t be judged by what they look like nor by their disabilities but by who they are as a person and this movie teaches just that. I recommend it but without judgement.

found the movie to be intense with the tender emotions being very subtly portrayed. The characters have bold outlines, with kindness, acceptance and emotional strength in every scene. Personally, I could deeply relate to all the main characters, especially Via, who is always supportive of August when his parents can’t support him- like on Halloween- and is forever-sacrificing for him.

Apart from the character of August, those of his sister and mother are very intense. For Via, it doesn’t appear much on the surface, but deep inside, when you observe, she is battling as much as August is, only in a different way.

As for Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson? Who could have pulled off the roles better? And of course, the role of August is perfectly played out- every action strewn in a burst of thoughtfulness and emotions.

This book is one of my top ten for this year. It is heartwarming and inspirational as well as being a damn good read, even a page-turner! It is a simple story of a young boy’s first two years at junior school’ but what makes it extraordinary is that the boy has been born with severe disfigurement that makes people he meets recoil and try to avoid him.

What makes it gripping and inspirational is his epic struggle to be treated as the normal kid he is inside. The story is told mainly from his point of view in a matter-of-fact way, but interspersed with chapters from the viewpoint of his sister, friends etc.

, thus showing how his affliction affects the people around him. The story is set in New York and describes the US school system, but this is no barrier as the message is universal. Apparently, the author was inspired by a similarly-afflicted girl she met and has created a beautifully-written, sensitive, but unsentimental story that will make you consider your relationship with your problems and prejudices.

I mislaid the (loaned) paperback version of the book when I was halfway through so I had to buy a replacement. I thought it money well-spent to buy the hardback as I’m sure I will go back to it.

as a middle schooler Great book at just the right time. My grandson was entering public school, as a middle schooler, for the first time. It is a Newberry Award Winner and as an added bonus was written by Jeff Kenny, one of my grandson’s favorite authors.

The book is great. However, when I ordered it, I expected a 1st edition, 1st printing, signed by the author, which was advertised. After I agreed to purchase the book, the 1st edition, 1st printing, signed parts of the ad disappeared.

I believe that the ad must have been hacked by someone. (I do have a screen shot of the hacked ad. ) I ordered two of the books, and I have returned one.

Did not realize when I purchased the book that my 10-year-old grandson was already reading it in school. He loves the book as does his class so I think it was a very good purchase as he starts in a new school next year.

These are good books for young readers transitioning from early to intermediate level – I speak from many years teaching experience. They are clever and entertaining, with humor based on clever inversions and witty mis-interpretations which are often hilarious, never unkind, always reassuringly resolved with a freshly-baked cake or batch of cookies, etc.

I love them !.

These fun filled books will be delightful to children as read aloud and have fun books. Always a favorite with young children, these are nice and have a good theme. Glad i bought them for my great grandchildren.

Read aloud never gets better than with Amelia.

Love this series. It is a light and funny read. my 5 year old enjoyed reading them.

David Wiesner is such an imaginative storyteller and talented illustrator. This picture book depicts frogs traveling on lily pads through the air on a Tuesday evening. The frogs and settings are realistically drawn and their journey is a magical one.

I recommend.

This is one of my favorite books! It is delightful for everyone of all ages, especially if they like frogs and toads. I have given 3 as baby gifts, but would definitely buy it for a frog- loving adult.

This book is whimisical and fun. It engages children and adults alike. The illustrations are amazing!

It’s a classic book that stands the test of time. A non-brainer in that you don’t have to worry if there are any unsavory details that you don’t want your kid to read in it. This particular version is light weight and a very fast read.

It’s a small paperback. Lovely artwork on the cover. Good summer good for your kids. You can’t go wrong with this legendary author – always delivers the magic of a fantasy world. Nice to see good overcome evil, too.

Highly recommend for your young enthusiasts.

It’s pretty obvious that these books are allegorical. Even if you don’t know who C. S. Lewis is I think it probably doesn’t take a genius to figure out the religious representation throughout this book (and the others).

I don’t follow a Judeo-Christian path personally and I have no problem reading this; it’s not at all preachy or so obviously Christian that it reads like a rewritten Bible story or something. So regardless of your own religious affiliation (or if you aren’t religious at all) The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe is an excellent choice if you want to sit down for a couple of hours for a fun light story of magic and adventure.

I purchased this book as a gift for a Christmas book exchange. I remembered reading or watching the story of Ferdinand as a kid. The price was right and shipping was free from the seller! Can’t get better than that.

Overall the story was what I remembered, a sweet little bull who loves peaceful days and “smelling the roses. ” The part I forgot about was the book describing in generalities some of the implements used to provoke bulls during bullfights.

I would say that most of the story is great for kids, but you may want to share this with older children. Nice thin paperback book, can’t be more than 20 pages. It was super popular with the adults (20-30yrs) at my Christmas party–I think we all were a bit nostalgic.

A classic story done right. This book is fantastic and is a go to gift for any baby shower. I wish it didn’t have the plug for the cartoon movie version on the cover. I would prefer the classic cover, but this price is right!.

We love Ferdinand. This was a special story my husband and daughter have always read together since she has been a baby. We came across this adorable bundle and had to have it. We signed the inside cover for my daughter and dated it so she can have this book with her for many years to come.

Our original copy was paper back so I love having the hard cover copy and the plush is simply adorable!.

As a little girl, I watched the How to Train Your Dragon movies and fell in love with the tender care they took of their dragon pals and the strength and guts that Hiccup (the main character) portrayed by befriending the scaly beast.

This is the book series where it all began! Follow Hiccups adventures as he proves to himself and his tribe that despite all odds, he can raise to be a great leader. I recommend this book for any young reader or old reader who needs a bit of a confidence boost.

I realize this book has tons of great reviews, but if you and your kids have already watched the movies, this book falls flat. The movies introduce Toothless as a smart, strong, silly, and loyal dragon.

In the books, he’s barely tolerable. The books portray all the dragons with petulant, arrogant, and selfish demeanors. The kids and I still enjoyed the book, but not nearly as much as the movie.

I thought this was the book version of the movie that covers this book front and back. However in tiny print at the very tip top, it says “the original book that inspired the movie” – since the Image is the “new movie” that is what I thought it meant.

It really means the very original book that inspired the very “first” movie. My child and I were extremely disappointed as a huge understatement. Look over details of any book and cover small print before you buy!!.

I am greatful to have found such a great, helpful book. Everything about it is perfect. From the layout (the way all the different subjects are organized and the colors) to the way it explains and shows how to do things.

Would definitely recommend as it is well worth the money. Makes learning and teaching much easier.

IšverstiShow in original languageI ordered this book in grade 3 when schools in our area closed due to COVID-19. I am so glad I did because it has been incredibynhelpful. This book includes engaging material that is grade-level appropriate.

There is an answer key in the back along with stickers to keep your child motivated. It also includes a multiplication table to help your child learn. There are helpful hints throughout the book to help you teach your child.

Lots of stickers for motivation.

She is in advanced math for 2nd grade & this is the perfect comprehensive workbook to make sure all the areas are introduced & completely covered. The Spectrum series is a favorite because it is so thorough and is in line with any state core curriculum.

Always a good choice, in any subject!.

Sometimes kids get confused. If they can see an example, it would help. I tend to confuse him more when I try to explain it to him. I just know how to get the answer.

IšverstiShow in original languageI wish I would have found Carson Dellosa/Spectrum books sooner. They are all worlds better than any others I have used. This Writing book I find particularly excellent.

It is very step-by-step into the writing process of all the important types of writing. I understand some students may not need that level of detail and thoroughness, but they could always skip a few pages or combine some work.

However, my daughter has had much difficulty with writing all year, and definitely benefited from the deliberate step-by-step lessons. After a little less than two months with this book and a few other Dellosa books, I can absolutely see an improvement in her writing.

Not only that, she is more confident in her ability, and, therefore, less frustrated when she has to do a writing assignment. I highly recommend this Writing book!.

This reading practice book is a great resource to have. This book has many passages with good question sets for comprehension. It’s great that this resource is offered in an online and physical version.

I do wish that it stated which standard(s) that each passage covered. Other than that, its a great resource to have on hand. *I participate in the Carson Dellosa brand ambassador program and have received this product for free to review.

Another Awesome Book By Joko Willink, Master 8 loves it, he is inspired to get out and try new things, encourage other kids to be like a Warrior Kid. Following the last book our family were all really excited to see where Jake was at now such a good read for not only the kids but us Adults also a reminder actions speak louder than words.

We should all be Like Warrior Kids.

This is an awesome and engaging book. My kids loved it. Out of all the read aloud books I read with my kids, this was their favorite because of all the fantastic characters and the little stories were so intricately woven into the overarching story which has such a good positive theme.

Great book with a lesson about determination! Kids can really understand and enjoy this story within several stories and it is a chapter book! I loved reading it to my 2nd graders and they really couldn’t wait to hear it!.

This is a delightful book about a sweet young girl who is trying to change the fortune of her family. Intertwined are Chinese folk tales and the art work is exquisite! This was our featured book for a fourth/fifth grade book club.

It would also be a great read aloud for younger children.
