Best Books For 1St Graders To Read (2024 Updated)

I bought this for my granddaughter and she loved it. I had previously bought The Night Before Preschool and Kindergarten. She loved all three.

I am a first grade teacher, and I bought this book to use as a read aloud on the first day of school. It was short and sweet, and I’m sure the students will be able to connect to the main character in this story! The pictures are beautiful, and very detailed, and I love how the story is modeled after “The Night Before Christmas” – so cute!.

My daughter is entering 1st grade in September. She’s so nervous. This is a great book to calm her nerves and show her that although it’s not kindergarten she will be just as comfortable once she gets adjusted.

My son loves it he likes to read it everyday we do a couple of pages and he has so much fun

I bought both sets of junkie B Jones ( Kindergarten and first grade) I have two granddaughters one in kindergarten and the other is in preschool. Although the oldest is learning to read the youngest loves to listen to the story.

They read at least one chapter every night. They love this series and can’t wait for bedtime. Although my daughter doesn’t like when they use stupid and Big fat Mouth she changes the words so the girls still get the idea.

They can’t wait to see we Junie will do next.

My daughter absolutely loves reading this book set. She read the first set and was delighted to get this second set. Highly recommended.

I needed “Jingle Bells, Batman Smells” for my daughters class activity and my daughter loves Junie B Jones so I purchased the whole set, knowing that they will be read. She absolutely loves these silly books.

I have used this series of books to improve our kids reading. The books use the rote method of teaching with some phonics. They are staged very well and as the kids move through the levels you can see their reading ability improving dramatically.

Also the stories are simple and the kids really like them.

I love it cuz my son is five years older and has disability. But he loves to read and look at pictures. It’s great way start get your kids to read and sound out words. ❤️ wish it was cheaper cuz there more other too buy too I love to  encourage my son to read.

No matter what if he heard of hearing and try so hard to say words he still will sign language it too.

Our youngest who has been struggling a little with reading loves them. The pictures are clear, the words sequential and although the stories are a great length. They are long enough for learning but short enough to keep her interested.

She shares her reading with all the grown ups around her, brings them in the car, reads them to us in bed early in the morning and even wanted to read them in the bath!! It has had an impact on her reading in school too and she is getting on much better now.

Love this book! Kids can relate to other kids by finding common interests while some things pique their curiosity. I learned quite a lot myself!

I have been homeschooling four children(three girls, ages 7,9,10 and a boy 6) since March and they wanted to continue during the Summer. Part of our daily routine is a Read Aloud and one of the best was this book.

We did a page everyday and each day there were new questions that lead to new information to research. I encourage every family and teacher to purchase this remarkable book.

Such a beautiful book about different families around the world and how they go about their everyday lives, what they eat etc. I brought 2, one for my kids and one for my teacher mother in law.

This book is excellent as it invokes discussion with children. They can see what David is doing wrong and will tell you what he should do. Excellent for kids with disabilities that learn through pictures and cannot read or don’t have a huge vocabulary.

One of the books shows David’s bottom. The kids love it and giggle. Definitely a captured audience with books by David Shannon.

The David series from David Shannon are delightful for young and old. David may be the most mischievous little boy ever. And he always has that gleam in his eye. Highly recommend this dries along with Shannons other books.

My grandson can totally relate to David! He got such a kick out of this story, we’ve read this multiple times already! Excellent.

This book is excellent for kids. I bought this for my 8 year old daughter as she is learning about the world and my son who is 4 loves the pictures. I’ve even ordered a few more books on different subjects.

If you buy only 1 thing for learning. make it this one! Love this one by School Zone with 300+ pages of engaging learning. Each of the core topics have instruction then fun practice pages. We use it regularly with 6 year old twins.

We bought a second book. Great book that covers so many of the core curriculum items in a fun, colorful and engaging way that’s easy to understand on their own.

Engaging and colourful illustrations throughout. Exercises seem challenging enough, and my 6 year old is able to do them with minimal assistance. Overall, a helpful tool during these turbulent times with the fate of traditional schooling out the window.

Nice mix of activities. We ordered this book after my daughter finished the kindergarten version and it followed up nicely. My daughter is 5 and starts kindergarten in a few months. She is advanced for her age and the book is just the right amount of challenging for her without being frustrating.

She enjoys the math. Some of the activities are a bit out of her realm, like the telling time section, but she will grow into it. I like that it includes lots of fun activities too. Highly recommend.

Both of my twin girls are very interested in learning, but they do not like staying at the same pace as each other. These books allow them to work simultaneously, but work on completely different skills.

This is a gorgeous little book for pre-schoolers, and teaches basic counting skills with delightful illustrations of cute animals. It is sure to be a treasure for many years to come, and makes learning fun.

Beautifully illustrated pictures, easy to read, engaging for young children and includes rhymes to keep young children engaged. Well written and illustrated. A must have for all young children.

Bought these for my son who is in Prep and who needed do to some extra reading practice. Nice little stories and really good value compared to other sets of readers. The pages are a bit flimsy, but as a positive this makes the books thin and lightweight, so was easy to take them on holiday to keep up the reading.

I bought this set to teach my daughter to read. I think it works well for ages 5 and 6. I did get a set w a monster on it instead of a unicorn as pictured but nonetheless it is a great set w fun themes and 6 pages of repetitive worded sentences.

I ordered this Big Book of Dinosaurs for the younger of my two great-nephews, but I expect his older brother will enjoy it also. They are 6 and 8 yrs old. While both love all things dinosaurs, the 6 yr old really does.

They do not have any books with this much information on their level or such detailed pictures.

I don’t like writing reviews. I think it’s silly (although I read them…) and because of that I’ve never written one, but this book is worth it. I saw this book among other “first day of school” books section in the middle of a very busy day at Target.

I read a few and didn’t really love them then I picked this gem up. I’m an immigrant in this country and I immediately started weeping, INSIDE Target, in front of people, around page 3. It is a lovely book that is beautifully written and illustrated and I only wish it had been written earlier.

It tells a lovely message of inclusion and love and family and friendships. I’m not going to lie, I thought I was buying it for my American born child, but really, I bought it for myself. Just a beautiful book.

These are small, paper books, with 8 pages, including the title page. Words and phrases are repeated, which provides satisfying success. Most have a little twist on the last page, which makes us both smile.

As the levels increase, there are small changes, but nothing that makes “D” overwhelming, compared to “A”. I purchased these for my second grade granddaughter, who is the youngest in her class (late August birthday), and who is not reading quite as well as her classmates: reading too fast, leaving out words, lacking confidence.

She fell in love with an adorable resin beagle puppy in a box at a nice gift shop. I bought the puppy statue, she named her Pumpkin, and I said that she needed to read all 60 books to me – no errors, or she started that one over – before Pumpkin could go home with her.

It took her two short sessions to read all 15 Level “A” books and a couple of the higher ones. She enjoys completing each one quickly and tossing it into the “finished” baggie! I think we have about 7 left.

I look forward to sending Pumpkin home with her and to giving her the books to read, again, to her parents and little sister. In addition, the illustrations are simple, black and white drawings, so they will be wonderful for coloring.

Don’t expect lengthy, complicated stories. This purchase is a 5-star one for me, because I see a sparkle in my little girl’s eyes, when we pick some to read, and when she knows she has done a good job!.

25 Mini book, Each Has 7-page Story. My PreK Daughter Just Turning 5 Year Old Was Able To Read It Herself With Some Help. We Shared Some Of The Books With Her Classmates.

These aren’t books. If you are comfortable paying the price for NOT BOOKS so be it. But these are stapled together black and white pamphlets being advertised as books, and they won’t fill up your kid’s bookshelf because they aren’t books.

For what they are, reading practice pamphlets, they are fine. But don’t expect BOOKS.

Excellent learning tool for our homeschooling family. Bright colors, a variety of activities and concepts make this an affordable winner. Using this to reinforce basic learning building blocks.

The title to the book drew me to look at it. Once I reviewed several of the pages, I immediately knew it was exactly what I was looking for. My grandson is finding it easy to follow.

My 5-year-old grandson was so proud of himself when he was able to pick up the first book and read it without a lot of coaching. A child who is more advanced probably needs a different set. The pictures are super simple, but entertaining for a child, and the characters are easily recognizable.

Forget about the reviewers that slam them for being “KKK. ” Totally ridiculous. They are based on shapes — Mat is round, Sam is a triangle. Come on people –do we have to look for something that isn’t there?!.

This book has all the feels! Well, a lot of them anyway. If I had a kidlet this is the book I’d be choosing to explore feelings with them to help them distinguish one from another. I love that there’s no judgement about having a specific feeling and that no feeling is labelled either good or bad.

Taking us on a poetic journey through silly, scared, disappointed, happy, sad, angry, thankful, frustrated, shy, bored, excited, jealous and proud, Janan Cain has created a wonderful tool to help kidlets to be able to identify their own and others’ feelings.

Janan’s illustrations really exemplify what each feeling can look like. From the colours used in the scene to the expressions on the kid’s faces and the font used to name the feeling, along with the scene itself, each illustration captures the feeling brilliantly.

I think my favourite illustration is the excited one. You can see the person “bouncing like a rubber ball”, with starbursts where they’ve landed. The colours are bright and the excited word with its multicoloured letters and funky squiggles looks like it too wants to jump off the page.

Maybe I like this one because I’m well known for my jumping up and down excited moments, but it’s a fun feeling and like all of the other illustrations it’s gorgeous. There’s even a page for parents at the end of the book to help guide discussions with their child about their feelings.

I found this book at my local library (yay libraries!). I’m definitely going to make a point of telling my librarians how cool this book is.

This is a really beautiful book. I bought it for my 4 year old who doesn’t open up easily with expressing his feelings in words and his crech also said that he always says he’s “ok” when they know he isn’t.

I decided to get the book to see if we could help him associate colours and vocab to how he feels. He is not special needs but eitherway I could see this book being beneficial to all babies and toddlers learning and understanding about strong feelings and emotions.

When the book arrived, he read through it and as recommended on the back of the book, to discuss with your child what makes them feel [insert emotions here] and he definitely engaged and liked the interaction as opposed to just reading the text.

We try and read it a few times a week and chat about what makes us happy, angry, etc and even the colourful illustrations alone make this book stand out from the other books. He loves to read an has many books but we don’t have anything that deals with emotions directly and I’m very happy we added this to his collection.

It’s not necessarily his favourite book but then again every child is different.

This was referred to us by our daughters therapist. It has been a good tool to get her to understanding feelings. My daughter needed empathy help. She went to a school for help with empathy training and emotional help.

Like a therapeutic session but for kids with other kids. This book along with a few others helped her a lot to talk about emotions and asses them and become more comfortable feeling and talking about feelings and also I think defining them was very helpful too.

I would give this 2 thumbs up.

In all my life, I had never heard about them and searched the Internet and was so amazed at what was there – in plain sight! And they are all over the world! God is so amazingly AWESOME – as Psalms 92 reads – I will sing for joy at the works of Thy hands – How great are Thy works, o LORD!.

IšverstiShow in original languageI bought these books with the intention of giving them to specific children. However, I started to read one of them just to see if it was a good choice of gifts. After reading a number of the devotions, I decided to keep one copy and use it for a personal devotion.

Looks like I will have to buy an additional copy for the child it was intended for. Not only a great children’s book but also a great adult book. P. S. I am 81 years old so it is a good devotional for the elderly.

This workbook is nice to use with 1st grader students whoo might need extra help. Covers beginning reading skills. Pages are brightly colored and fun.

My son is great at reading and recall, but reading comprehension has been a developmental area. This book provides a number of short passages and activities to help him build his skills in that area.

My kids love all the Spectrum books. They are colorful and engaging. We do them year round and the kids never complain about these books. We do more than just these but the book by Spectrum are always great and def worth the money.
