20 Best All Around Fishing Rod And Reel Combo (2023 Updated)

Bought 2 combos last month. Rod is really strong. I’ve got nothing bad to say about it. I’ve snagged a lot of weeds and whatnot but I’m never worried that this rod would break. This combo has been dropped and kicked (accidentally of course).

But it’s really sturdy. My wife and I love this combo and we’ve caught a lot of fish with it. Bought some Daiwa reels just incase the one that comes with this combo breaks. But so far it stands use and abuse.

Would buy a third one for my sister for our next fishing trip.

overall, it is a strong rod which can land 50cm+ fish. caught 3 yakkas, 2 pike and a barracuda with this rod on our recent camping trip. went home happy with friendly and informative customer service.

some negative part of it are: the red coating gets off easily (doesn’t really affect the rod’s strength), and the part where you put your hook on the rod seems to tangle on the line regularly when casting.

also, this might be my fault but i bought a 2 piece rod and the first time i stuck the rod together, it was very hard to pull out. and later in our camping trip, the rod pieces were stuck up when we were packing up.

we tried all methods but didn’t work. in the end, we managed to pull it out but taking about 2 hours but the guards were ruined 🙁 we fixed it with glue though.

This rod is really durable, and totally capable of holding up when an unexpected monster hooks up; and my 5-14g cast weight rod never complains punching 30g lures out to sea. In saying that they definately compromise in some ways in favour of durability: the steel guides can squeak with wet mono line, sending tiny vibrations up the rod.

The grip is really high quality and holds the reel super securely, but the ‘cutaways’ make it thin enough that normal size hands have to really clench it, it doesn’t rest in your fingers when using bait like a normal round grip (though it’s fine for more “active” lure fishing).

the foam at the top of the grip is soft and not that sensitive, but it’s easy to lay a finger just above it to feel for vibrations. This rod suits me perfectly well since theres no need to baby it packing in and out of the bumpy 4by or loaning it to my family to bash around, but for someone with perhaps a cushyer car or looking for a more refined fishing experience there are other rods way more suited to their style.

the other rods just need more care and attention payed to them.

One tough rod. First time out, I’m comparing the Ugly Stik Carbon MHF to a Lew’s Mach MHF. It feels like it weighs a tad more than the Lew’s, even though it may not (?). It’s a bit stiffer as well. I wasn’t sure where this would sit in my arsenal, so I left the barcode sticker on.

Got a nice bass, then hooked a 30lb flathead cat on a spinnerbait. Big fight. After 15 minutes, landed the cat. I’m keeping the rod, it did really well against a pretty dang big fish. Now I know where it fits: 3/8oz and up plastics and jigs, spinners etc.

I’ve broken Med graphite rods (intact, but shedding splinters) on big drums before. If I’m lucky, I’ll hook the Monsters of the Deep on this indestructible Ugly Stick and spare my fancier rods a harsh fate that this one just brushed off.

For all it’s toughness, I give it a “B” for fishability (with a Tatula R reel). I give the Mach a B and my best Big Bear an “A”. The Ugly Stik Carbon is a keeper.

Nice and compact. Not sure ifni like it more than telecoping stule but ot soes seem a lot stronger. Caught a nice 1. 5 to 2 pound bass and it had decent play. Cast pretty well even thoughbi have heavierr line on it than it should.

Need to make sure allmsections are on tight. A coue if forst cast top two sections went into the pond also. good thing lure didnt break off so i got it all back. Now i attach with eyes 90deg off then twist after putting together to makenaure its all snug.

Reel seems to be pretty decent for price also.

I’ve had the smallest version of this rod for years now. Never had any issues and continues to work just fine. Landed a 30lb grass carp on it with 6lb mono. I do everything from bass fishing, to catching bait fish and catfish with it.

I purchased a Crusader Spinning Combo a couple weeks ago. The ice is finally melting off the lakes, and I’ve had the opportunity to use the new combo a couple times. For the price you pay for this combo, you can’t go wrong.

The rod is great. The reel is great.

I hav the 27 inch light action rod. This is the sweet spot between the ultra light and medium. Flat tip is supersensitive. The spacing of the eyelets close together at the tip helps load the rod gradually protecting light 4 lb.

test line and as with any great rod it comes with a hook loop at the base. I handle has a great feel to it and is very comfortable. I love the free fall real no more line twist from spinning reels and is very smooth.

I love the radioactive green color. I do wish this rod with glow-in-the-dark. Also there’s no directions on what the 4 o-ring are for. After some searching I realized there to hold a reel onto the rod.

This is extremely difficult are used for chopsticks to expand them enough to roll them onto the rod handle.

So the price on this combo is great. The rod itself is quality. I have one and it has been through some rough areas when pond-hopping. Getting caught in trees, ripping the bait out of grass, getting snagged many times and being tossed in the back of my truck.

Nothing has broke. The reel is fine and the rod still looks and performs great. Granted, I have not caught anything living that weighs more than 3 pounds, but I have reeled in branches close enough to un-snag the rig.

I am looking to buy another one as soon as Karl gets more in! this is a great rod for the beginner as well as a good addition to the vet’s collection in my opinion! Tight lines!.

I purchased 2 of these rods to have one for my wife and myself, I definitely regret that decision. Firstly my rod lasted a solid 15 minutes until I hooked a small lake trout maybe just a quarter pound or so broke the tip off the rod, like I mean splintered bad.

And my wife’s rod lasted until the end of the day and the exact same thing happened. Not only were the rods bad quality the reels weren’t very good at all either after 5 casts they both started making some very undesirable sounds.

I would not recommend buying this product to anybody.

I bought this as a gift for my grandson. It has a very nice action for young beginning angler. He was ecstatic that it was the real deal and not a novelty rod. Would buy it again and may very well have too as his brother is a little jealous.

We have an upcoming trip planned. Fishing equipment is just too expensive to buy there so we started shopping around for a few “travel” poles. My husband has always been a fan of the Daiwa brand so we thought we would give it a try.

He and my son have tried these out at the local fishing pond and love them. We were afraid the pole might tend to come apart while casting, but that doesn’t happen. The reel is very smooth too. My husband did choose to change the line.

They’re packed in a hard case that is the perfect size to fit in our luggage, and survive the baggage handlers. There’s also enough room for a few plugs. We bought them for travel, but my husband says he’s going to keep one in his truck to use around here instead of his normal rod and reel, that was considerably more expensive.

Apparently he must think it’s a pretty good little fishing pole!.

This is the forth one I have owned. I put it in my travel trailer and use it whenever I have the chance to fish. Small,light weight, and the case protects the section of rod from breaking. Use it for fresh water fishing with good results.

The case has some small extra pockets for swivels and weights. A great choice for Trout and crappie in rivers and streams.

Just got back from a hunting/fishing trip to Norther Alberta. I put this little reel to the test. Caught rainbows up to 5 lbs. This set up preformed beautifully. I’ve paid lots for rods and reels that didn’t perform this well.

Paid $130 for combo, rod will chuck a three gang pilly and bring in a large stingray no worries. Reel is actually not bad and seems fairly well made however China is notorious for under lubrication with crappy grease and this reel is no exception, I took it camping straight from the shop and it was fine and smooth but personally I’d service it soon after purchase with proper grease and methods.

(I’m an OCD mechanic) My bail pulley screw came loose after a few uses but that’s not an issue, nip up and it’s fine. No regrets.

The reel was great right off the track but after 5 uses, it started jamming up. I figured it might need cleaning because I was using it at the beach. The main gear was already broken. 3 of the pins had broken.

all next to each other. I was really disappointed in the durability of the components of this reel. I was told where I purchased it that the warranty was void because I took it apart.

I ordered this because it was cheap and I was waiting for my Lew’s KVD to be delivered in 2 weeks. I wanted to fish! I was very impressed with this rod and reel especially for under $20. I thought it would be a throw away or parked in the garage but it goes with me on my fishing trips.

Both the rod and reel have great action. The only thing I would change is that the rod has no specs on it so it is a guessing game but it handles like a medium/fast action rod.

For the money spent, this rod and reel combination is excellent. There are much more expensive options that I am sure deliver higher quality, but if you want a decent starter rode and reel, this is a great choice.

Broke on the first fishing trip. Very disappointing. Would have returned it if I didn’t have to return in person in the store. Poor quality. Reading the good reviews, I wonder if I just got damaged item at the first place.

This is a Christmas present for my granddaughter’s son. He loves to fish and this is fantastic I would recommend this for other kids he’s 12 but he loves to fish the beautiful rod and reel.

item came with no packing material reel bounced around in box bending the eyes on pole , line was unraveled off reel , fixed all that. then the first time my girlfriend used it she set the hook on a 2 1/2 lbs bass and the pole snapped at the joint were the two pieces meet , not impressed will not order again.

Pop fished these reels up in Alaska on rivers and the North Pacific, on the Snake River with me, and on the rIvers in Germany, in the Atlantic ocean just North of Myrtle Beach, in Northern California steelhead rivers, for a lifetime, still working.

When movers crushed the reels we replaced the broken parts and they still work. I just bought two more Mitchells for my home-built rods in retirement, and plan on living and fishing for years, the fishing grandchildren will get the Mitchells and rods, if I don’t.

I read these reviews about the rods breaking and I simply don’t understand what the customers are doing wrong. I have now been using the Mitchell combos for 8 years and haven’t broke one rod yet. I’ve broke numerous equivilant priced rods.

(Berkley Lightning rods) I fish about 40 days a year – both casting and drifting for walleye. I wanted a combo that I would allow my kids to use so I’m obviously not going to buy a bunch of Loomis rods for them.

I am currently placing an order for 6 new combos which should last me another 6 years. Eventually, the reels start squeaking and feeling rough. The rods eventually start losing their spine so they start feeling like a lightweight rod.

But for the money, they are great. I would highly recommend them.

coast! Like fishing for trout in shallow water and my line gets stuck often, so finally one of these times my old rod broke. I was kinda glad cause it was real old. I read reviews about mitchell and decided to give it a try.

Ain’t I glad I bought it! My old rod was 7 ft and I was worried bt buying 6. 6ft because I like casting far. Didnt know what to expect. First cast with the new mitchell rod , my hook went twice the distance then with the old rod and that’s with the same 6 lb.

Line and same weight splitter. I love my new mitchell rod and am so glad I bought it. Its light and it casts great. Bearings are smooth.

So I just received this rod as a secondary to my bait cast setup and so far it has been great rod with exceptional comfort, extremely smooth operation and great looks to match. I would buy another but this will probably last me forever.

Near the end of summer in 2020 I decided I wanted to get back into fishing for a little socially distanced outdoor time. I was looking for a solid all around rod and reel combo that would not break the bank.

I knew I wanted something 6 feet or over and at the time this was the only rod and reel big five had in stock that met that criteria. I really lucked out. Is this combo perfect? No. Is it perfect for someone looking for a single rod and reel fishing experience that can be used in most situations for most species of fish? Yes, this is that combo.

I have used this primarily forecasting from the shore. I have used worms, treble hooks and bobbers, all manner of jig and spinner and I have been happy with this rod and reels performance with all of them.

to begin with this rod performs less like a fiberglass rod which it claims in the description and much more like a graphite composite style rod. It’s very fast, and has good power for flinging your jig about as far out there as you can.

This rod is surprisingly sensitive I can feel when my weight is bumping into rocks or starting to drag in the sea grass. The reason I did not give this five stars is that I have noticed I have to put a little more pressure on the rod when I’m connecting the top on to the bottom.

if you don’t use a decent amount of pressure to connect your rod the top will fly off every 30 or so casts. But once I started putting a little more pressure when putting it together this problem stopped occurring.

User error I guess.

I’ve had this rod for half a year now and am more than pleased with it. I have used this rod for grunter, bream, moses, trevally, and more. I left the rod unattended for a bit and the 2 piece is now a 1 piece.

It can still some off if you need it to but I don’t want it to and its perfect! The rod even bends past where the second parts comes off and nothing bad has happened yet! I replaced the line with braid and went a bit over kill with 30lb but it hasn’t failed me yet, despite all my friends telling me my braid is too heavy.

It is an amazing budget rod and would highly recommend, reel also works well despite the low price of the combo. Will soon be upgrading but i can always trust this rod to be a cheap backup and I’m definitely using Daiwa again!.

I bought this rod and reel on a whim because it was cheap and I figured it’d be good to have a cheaper rod and reel for my wife to use. Well, I got it yesterday, lined it with 10 lb Spiderwire, took it to the local state park, and when I casted it for the first time it flew and casted very smoothly and when I started reeling the line in the reel was surprisingly smooth and balanced.

All in all, this rod and reel is an extremely good value for even the most avid fisherman. I had gone to Dick’s Sporting Goods earlier in the day yesterday and purchased a brand new $100 Daiwa baitcaster rod and reel, and this spinning rod and reel was a perfect companion to have close by for throwing smaller lures and casting far.

Love this rod and reel! It’s very smooth and cast really well. I used it all week and caught a boat load of fish. Drag system is really excellent for a inexpensive combo like the Okuma Rox. I will be buying another one in the future for my son.

I first used this rod a few months ago and have caught many fish! The sensitive rod is perfect for detecting the slightest bite on your bait. It’s so lightweight that handling the rod is a breeze for long periods of time.

Went with the 10′ heavy w/ 8000 combo. This thing is one heavy massive beast. Very smooth and well built reel. Using it as a non-conventional alternative to a round baitcaster combo for big pike and musky.

Not the rod you want to be holding all day, but an hour here and there of launching Believers, mini Bondy baits, Double 10s etc (anything in the 1-6oz range) and this thing is super fun. Otherwise, it’s used as an extra trolling rod and also performs well with dipsey divers.

All around awesome rod. I’ll be purchasing the 5000 series as well.
